Technical and Historical Notes
Soon after the end of the First Earth/ZAFT War, ZAFT begins developing its next generation of mass production mobile suits. The ZGMF-X999A ZAKU Mass Production Trial Type is an early design in the "New Millennium" series. The trial ZAKU is equipped with an N-Jammer Canceler, which was first used during the war by the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam and the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. In addition, the trial ZAKU is equipped with Phase Shift armor. Its armaments include a pair of hip-mounted railguns and a pair of high frequency blade tomahawks. In December C.E. 71, a trial ZAKU undergoing testing in South America by civilian test pilot Courtney Hieronymus is attacked by the Earth Alliance's new GAT-02L2 Dagger L mobile suits. Courtney also encounters an MWF-JG71 Raysta piloted by war veteran Barry Ho. In C.E. 72, ZAFT and the Alliance sign the Junius Treaty, which formally ends the war and prohibits the use of N-Jammer Cancelers and Mirage Colloid. To comply with the treaty, the trial ZAKU is redesigned to exclude the N-Jammer Canceler. The Phase Shift armor is also dropped, and the new treaty-compliant design is mass produced as the ZGMF-1000 ZAKU Warrior and ZGMF-1001 ZAKU Phantom.
