During the One Year War, the Earth Federation Forces were at a disadvantage due to their late start in mobile suit development. As a stopgap measure, they refitted the SP-W03 Mobile Pod into the combat model RB-79 Ball. In addition to the standard model and the the RB-79K type, the Federation also produced the RB-79C Ball Type C. The Type C was similar to the standard model, but it mounted a 120mm recoilless cannon instead of a 180mm one. In addition, it featured an extra set of manipulator arms to handle larger objects. After the One Year War, most of the Balls were disassembled, but some were kept in service defending military bases. During Operation Stardust in UC 0083, many Ball Type Cs were used to guard the Solar System II and its fleet of ships.
