Technical
and Historical Notes
One of the
pinnacles of the somewhat underhanded "Silhouette Formula
Project" conducted by Anaheim Electronics in UC 0123 was
the RX-99 (AFX-9000) Neo Gundam, which was acquired for use by the Earth
Federation Forces. The Neo Gundam combined the best of new and
old technologies, incorporating the advanced new weapons technology
developed by the Strategic Naval Research Institute's "Formula
Project." The Neo Gundam was armed with a Generative Beam
Rifle Device, or "G-BRD" for short, which operated
in a fashion similar to a Variable Speed Beam Rifle (VSBR) but
was completely hand-carried and powered by its own built-in
reactor rather than connected directly to the mobile suit's
reactor. The Neo Gundam also used the classic "Core Block
System" made famous by the original RX-78-2
Gundam and other early Federation prototypes, thus increasing
the survivability of the pilot. The G-BRD also mounted rocket
thrusters, and could be attached to the Neo Gundam's Core Fighter
to operate like a booster. This combination of advanced weaponry
and a Core Fighter made the Neo Gundam one of the better, more
well-rounded prototype mobile suits to be produced at the time.
Only two Neo Gundams would be produced: Unit 1 was painted in
a black color scheme while Unit 2 was painted in a more traditional
white color. The two Neo Gundams would be put on the Earth Federation's
Londo Bell ship Bladewood,
as part of the 302nd fleet. Tokio Randall would board the Ajax
and eventually steal the Neo Gundam Unit 2. Both units would
later be destroyed in a fight, with only the Core Fighter of
Unit 2 and Tokio surviving.
