Episode 11: Go Mad

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

Summary

Marlene kills a couple of Blue, exhausted and tired. But when she sees the Blue suddenly turn to look at Baikonur, she realizes something must’ve happened with the shuttle. Han tells the commander he’s not going to hand the Sleeper over to him or to Second Earth, saying she’ll just be a guinea pig to them. He goes on to say he doesn’t care if he’s disobeying orders, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect his Sleeper, going as far to saying he’ll find the promised land. The commander warns him, but Han tells him not to interfere, since he still controls the computer for the drones, and cuts the radio line. A teammate tries to contact Alpha team, but can’t get in touch. The commander realizes Han rigged the system somehow, and they need to stop him. Yuji looks at a monitor, showing Alpha team still fighting. One of Alpha’s pilots says he can’t get in contact with Beta team, and the team leader tells them to hold their positions until they do, while Marlene wants to know what’s going on. Beta team enters the hangar, and sees the shuttle is almost ready to launch. The catapult charges up, but soon after it suddenly loses power. Han can’t figure out what happened and looks at his laptop to see that a power failure occurred at the 10th level on the underground part of the complex. He leaves the shuttle in a rush, but is greeted by the rest of Beta team. He tells them that they need him to get the shuttle working, but the commander says if it wasn’t for his skill, he’d kill him now. They let him live and head to the lower levels. Meanwhile, the Blue continue their march, still pouring out of the burning nest by the dozens. Beta team gets to the 10th level and enter the power room. Han hooks his laptop to the computer, saying that the power for the entire complex is unstable. In a dark corner of the room, Yuji spots a strange looking Blue attached to the wall (called the Clincher), connected to the power lines. It’s somehow feeding on the power line, as the power to the complex keeps dropping. Alpha team continues to fight the Blue, and one of the pilots requests orders since more Blue are coming. Yuji tells the commander they need to do something, and points the gun at the Clincher. The commander tells him not shoot, since he may miss and hit the power reactor, while Han is baffled and nervous, unable to think of what to do. An alarm suddenly goes off, and all the Attackers supporting Alpha team lose power, and the Blue toss the drones around like toys. Alpha team's commander can’t figure out why the drones shut down, and the situation begins to sink into his head. The commander and two others in Beta team try to hold Yuji down, while Han suddenly loses his cool. While Alpha teams A.S.s start to get overrun by the Blue, Han goes nuts and tries to pull the Clincher off the power supply by himself. Before he can be restrained, he pulls out a knife, telling the commander and his teammates not to interfere, and he starts jabbing at the Clincher, but can only dent it’s hide ever so slightly. Han’s gone mad, saying that the Sleeper he found deserves a better life, rather than being taken to Second Earth, awakened to the way life is now, and carved up. He says the commander and people like him wouldn’t understand, going on to say Sleepers and humans are still the same, but are treated differently. The Clincher cuts Han’s face to ward him off, but Han continues to attack it, finding a weak spot on it’s side and jabs it successfully. The Clincher shoves Han off, and jumps onto him. It wraps tendrils around Han’s head, either trying to crush his head or suffocate him. Han suddenly stops moving, and a gunshot from Beta team to the Clincher’s core seems to kill it, as it stops moving.

The situation with the battle with Alpha team is getting worse, the female teammate that Marlene had is down, her A.S. smashed to bits. She lays unconscious on the ground, but a Tank Beetle runs up to her and starts devouring her body. One of Beta team's men tries to get the power online, saying only one block of Supporters are still working, but the commander says the shuttle launch and the catapult are top priority. Yuji tries to leave, but the commander tells him to stay and that his actions aren’t permitted. Yuji says he has to help Marlene and her team, but the commander says he couldn’t help them, even though it sounds cold hearted, going on to add that Yuji has no A.S., and couldn’t help them anyway. Yuji suddenly says the supporters can, since they take voice command input. The commander tells him it’s too risky, saying Yuji is their prized sample and they can’t afford to lose him. Having had enough, Yuji punches the commander, knocking him down. He tells him he’s not his sample, arms his gun, and says he’s going to fight. The two other Beta teammates look on in shock, and tell the one at the computer to get the supporters working, while the teammate tells him it’s his own head he’s risking. Another A.S. falls, leaving only Marlene and her team’s commander. Her A.S. is missing its head, but she continues to fight. The Alpha commander's A.S. is knocked down, and Blue start to swarm him, with a Chopper pinning him down. He starts up the A.S.’s manual self detonation while Blue try to smash his machine to pieces to get at him. He detonates his A.S., taking himself and several Blue with him, leaving Marlene alone. Her A.S. is now missing its left arm. She sees a fresh wave of Blue on her radar, and is shocked by how little ammo she has left. She believes she’s finished and gets ready to detonate her A.S. when the Blue come within range. Suddenly dozens of supporters come out, surrounding several of the Blue. They pin them and shock them to death, while Marlene watches in shock. Yuji calls out to her, and tells her he’s coming to pick her up, and that the shuttle is almost ready, while he rides on the back of a supporter. With the shuttle, a teammate tells the commander that the supporters can operate on reserve power, but doesn’t know if the catapult has the power to launch them. The commander tells him to try anyway, saying that if the supporters fall it won’t matter. Marlene tells Yuji to stay back, that the whole point of the mission is to get him into space, and will be wasted if he dies. She tells him she’s prepared to die, but Yuji tells her she’s not prepared for anything, going as far as to say he won’t go into space without her. She’s shocked, while more supporters fan out, Yuji’s supporter stops in front of Marlene. He holds out his hand, asks her to come down from her A.S. Supporters finally start to fall, but Marlene makes up her mind, kneeling her A.S. down, and taking Yuji’s hand, getting out. The shuttle finally launches, getting enough power to leave the base and head into space, while the Blue simply watch the shuttle from the ground below. In orbit, the Sleeper that Han found is safely aboard, while Beta team’s commander is on the radio, telling Second Earth that their mission was tough. He says they have two samples with them, that their mission was successful, and they look forward to be back home. In the passenger section, Yuji attends to Marlene’s wounds. She looks out the window, and Yuji asks her if the wounds still hurt. She says that isn’t it, and when he looks out the window, he says he almost forgot how good it feels to be alive because of the fighting. He says they both did it, survived all the fighting, and asks what’ll happen now between them. Marlene is speechless, and after they look at each other for a moment, they finally kiss. Yuji hears the back cargo door open and goes to check it out, while Marlene touches her lips after what happened. Yuji panics, and when Marlene goes to check on him, they both see the Clincher, still on Han’s head and alive. The teammate from the back hold is dead, with the other Sleeper somehow pulled from her pod, in Han’s hand. The Clincher somehow now controls his body, and it moves for the both of them. Marlene pulls out her handgun and steps to the side, but bumping into the wall with her injured arms stops for a quick second. The Clincher attacks with its claws, but Yuji steps in the way, taking both claws to his chest, while Marlene watches in shock. She finally kills the Clincher by shooting its core directly, and watches it float away while she holds Yuji. She calls out to Yuji, but he isn’t moving; she turns him to look at him, but he’s losing a lot of blood and isn’t responding. She holds onto him, and yells out his name in shock, while the shuttle heads for Second Earth.

Commentary

It seems Yuji’s bad luck streak doesn’t end. Marlene’s entire Alpha team, except for herself, are lambs to the slaughter when the Attackers they controlled lose power, and fall one by one to become bug food. It also didn’t help that the Clincher, a type of Blue they didn’t see before, stopped the shuttle from launching, which was both a blessing and a curse. Yuji shows some balls when he goes as far as to punch Beta teams commander and point a gun at him, literally taking charge. One should’ve expected something to go wrong after Yuji kisses her, since the Clincher also has the ability to control a dead body it is a attached to. Yuji pays this time for protecting Marlene, but I doubt he’s dead, since we’re still not halfway through. However, we don’t know what happened to the other Sleeper…although odds aren’t good, making Han’s efforts of protecting her wasted. We’ll have to see what happens next after this mess.
