Episode 5: Priority

Summary

Yuji, Marlene and Joey are in the abandoned building which houses the communications antenna and witness a new Blue hatch with its core shielded. Marlene tells the group that newly hatched Blues won’t attack, so they continue on their way, leaving the new Blue alone. They find the main control room and Joey supplies power to the building, and adjusts the antenna dish angle for Marlene. Marlene attempts to contact Second Earth, but Joey needs to raise the output before she’s able to make contact. Meanwhile, a mature Blue (but one that isn’t shielded), seems to be attracted to the generator and starts smashing the generator room. Marlene just tells Second Earth where their location is before the power goes out, and Joey can’t even get auxiliary power. Marlene says the new Blue couldn’t have attacked already, and they come to the conclusion that more mature Blue are hanging around. Marlene says they need to evacuate the building immediately, but Yuji asks if a rescue party is coming to pick them up. Marlene tells him she was only telling Second Earth they’re location to let them know they’re alive. She tells Joey that the place all surviving recovery squads are supposed to meet is at the Baikonur space base in Russia. Yuji is surprised, and then he remembers what he said to Yun. When he asks Marlene about Yun and the other survivors, a Blue bursts into the room through a wall and knocks Marlene aside. Yuji’s caught off guard and scared, and Joey has to pull him aside when the Blue attacks him. Marlene kills it by destroying the core as before, and seems to have a small cut under her eye. Yuji asks if she’s ok, but she doesn’t even respond to him and just tells the group to get moving. Yuji gets ticked off, but Joey offers him a hand and they get going. They get back into the truck and get into their Armor Shrikes, but a Tank Beetle Blue jumps off from the top of a building and starts stomping on the roof of the truck. Marlene blasts one of its legs off, but it just keeps going. Yuji punches the truck door open with the Grappler, and both get out just as truck is completely crushed. Choppers come into the fray and block one of their escape routes, but Marlene kills the Tank Beetle, with Yuji and Joey following her lead. They start heading back to the safe area of the city, but the Blue are following them as they go. Marlene kills two more Choppers, then a Tank Beetle tosses their bodies aside. But this Tank Beetle is shielding its core, and when Marlene tries to hit the location where the core would be, the rifle rounds can’t get enough penetration on the Tank Beetle’s front armor. The Tank Beetle charges, but Marlene gets caught in the charge and her Sniper A.S. is shoved into a damaged wall with steel beams sticking out. The Sniper A.S. gets pinned, and Marlene is lucky that a metal beam just missed her head. Yuji moves the Grappler to halt the Tank Beetle from attacking Marlene, and she wakes up to see the Grappler stopping the Tank Beetle. She takes aim with the rifle, just as Grappler’s right arm is crushed and is pushed aside, and shoots a round into one of the Tank Beetle’s eyes. The Tank Beetle goes crazy and knocks the Grappler into a debris pile of what was a concrete wall, and the Grappler is half smashed into it. The Tank Beetle runs off, but falls into the nearby river and drowns in it. Yuji gets out of the Grappler and starts removing concrete from Joey’s pilot seat, and gets off his helmet to find him badly bleeding. He tries to get him out of the seat, but panics when he sees blood soaked concrete that had penetrated through the Grappler’s armor, and struck the back of Joey’s head. Joey wakes up and weakly says he’s fine, and is happy to see that Yuji isn’t hurt. He asks him if he remembers that old song they sung together, and says it reminds him of Yuji, and calls him a friend. Joey finally passes away, and Yuji starts crying. Marlene walks by and sees what happened, but she turns away and tells Yuji to get going. Yuji asks her why she’s so cold, but she tells him again to get going, and starts walking, with Yuji looking at her with disbelief. Later, back in the safe section of the city across the river, the makeshift bridge is blown apart with explosives by Marlene and Yuji. The survivors of that section are almost panic stricken, and Yun is with her dog as they watched the bridge explode.

A large group of Choppers stop at the front of the destroyed bridge and start spitting out a green liquid substance that eventually hardens, starting to form a bridge for the Blue. Marlene briefs Robert of the situation, and Robert tells her to gather the survivors. Yuji asks them what the plan is, and Marlene points to the two nearly collapsed buildings leaning on each other. She says that if the Blue can be lured through that point, they have the advantage. Yuji realizes that she’s using the people as bait, and begs Marlene to find another way to help them. Marlene asks him if he has a better idea, but Yuji doesn’t respond. She says that if the plan works, there’s a chance that some of them can still survive. The survivors gather around and Marlene tells them the plan, while Yuji runs into Yun and tells her he’ll keep his promise and protect her. The Blue finally finish making their own bridge and start crossing the river and march onto the island en masse. Yuji, Marlene, and Robert have their rifles ready and hide behind a pile of rubble, with the survivors right behind them. Yuji watches as Yun sets her dog Maru loose, and starts throwing stones at Maru to scare him off, since she doesn’t want him getting hurt. Yuji remembers the promise he made, while Yun hides under some rubble and starts praying. The group of Choppers finally starts going through the passageway, and they start getting gunned down by Yuji, Marlene, and Robert’s gun fire to their cores. The first wave of Blue are all gone, except for a Man Eater 2 which breaks their defense line. Yuji sees a nearby motorcycle that still works and gets Marlene on with him to keep the Man Eater 2 from attacking the survivors, while Robert hides and can’t fight now due to his injuries. Yuji makes a pass at the Man Eater 2 while Marlene tries to gun it down, and they get ready for a second pass. Yun comes out to see Yuji quickly, but Marlene tells him to pay attention and they get back to the task at hand. Marlene shoots one of the eyes of the Man Eater 2, and it starts swinging its arms widely and hits the motorcycle. A second wave of Choppers marches right in and start killing the survivors. Every man, woman, and child start getting torn to shreds and devoured. Yun is off to the side looking at Yuji, who’s on the ground next to the wrecked motorcycle, giving her a sad look. Yuji remembers what Yun said, about how when they’re asleep, the Blue can’t get them. The Blue continue their onslaught, and a Chopper runs by Yun and takes her away in its jaws, causing Yuji to scream Yun’s name. Marlene takes ahold of Yuji and guns down a Chopper that would’ve gotten Robert, and tells him to use the explosives to get the rest of the Blue. She sees the explosives have already been set, and Robert tells her that he’ll draw the Blue to him. He reminds her that she needs to get Yuji to Second Earth, and Marlene gives him a kiss before she takes Yuji and runs off. Robert smiles as they leave, while Marlene covers a still in shock Yuji behind rubble. Robert yells out loud in front the Blue and presses a detonator, and sets off the explosives, killing all the Blue in one explosion. Time passes by, with Marlene and Yuji seeing what’s left, but can only find the remains of Blue, dust, and rubble, with no survivors in sight. Yuji notices Maru walking around, with his leash in his mouth. He drops it and looks around, wondering where Yun is. Yuji falls to his knees, and when Marlene tells them they need to get going to Baikonur, Yuji cries along with Maru.

Commentary

Another highly emotionally driven episode. If the saying “From bad to worse” were to be used right now…it would be this episode. Things have now gone completely wrong for Yuji and Marlene now. Yuji the most is affected by this. Joey dies in Yuji’s arms, unable to do anything to help, and having failed the survivors as they’re torn to bits, and lastly, Yun being killed right in front of Yuji. Robert dies here as well, but he goes out with bang, wanting to fight the Blue to the very end. Ironically, the only one left is the dog Maru, and it adds emotional impact to the viewers. I think I even jerked a tear the first time I saw this. The Blue show how cruel natured they are in the slaughter of the survivors. Man, woman, child, they don’t seem to care; they seem only driven to kill humans in general. One would be lucky this episode doesn’t send some viewers into depression, since it’s so heart breaking. Now with Yuji and Marlene the only survivors now (aside from Maru if that counts), they’re off to Baikonur base on foot it would seem.
