Episode 9: Confirm

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

Summary

The raiders are angry over being humiliated and are getting ready for another raid. A spare truck outside their building suddenly topples over, and the raiders realize that a Blue is near by. Suddenly, a tunnel in the middle of the building forms, and a Land Whale comes up, with the raiders opening fire. A short time passes, with the Land Whale gone, and the raiders now dead and cocooned. Elsewhere, Yuji starts running towards the buggy, leaving Elena behind for a short bit. The nomads don’t take to Dice and Marlene showing up and have rifles aimed at them. But when Dice and Marlene ask about Yuji, they realize they do know him, but it takes convincing from Yuji when he arrives to let them know they’re his friends. Dice greets Yuji, as does Marlene. But when Elena comes up and asks Yuji who his friends are, Dice can’t help but smirk and Marlene gives Elena an awkward look. Later, Marlene is filling up a water container next to a lake, and Yuji’s with her, as is Elena in the back. Marlene says they can still make it to Baikonur, but when she says they’re going, Yuji says he isn’t. He says the reason she’s taking him is because of her duty, and may not necessarily be to find a cure that may not exist, or wants to see how much of a Hell the rest of the world looks like. He says he’s staying with the nomads to live his life as a normal person, but before Marlene can object, Elena is happy to hear Yuji’s choice and takes him to get breakfast. As Yuji and Elena walk off, Marlene pulls her pistol and shoots a warning shot at the ground next to Yuji. She tells him it’s her duty to bring him back, even if it means by force. Elena steps in front of Yuji and tells Marlene that if she’s going to shoot, she should shoot them both. This baffles Marlene, and Yuji covers Elena and stares at Marlene. Marlene finally lowers her pistol and simply walks away. Dice can’t believe Marlene is giving up so easily, but thinks she’s just getting a bigger gun. Off in the distance, the Land Whale from before is heading in their general direction. The nomads are packing up for their next move, and Elena is talking to her father, who still wants to see Yuji make a choice. Dice meets up with Yuji and says that the kind of life the nomads live seems to suit him. He asks him if he is taking it too far but takes it back and says he can’t choose what life Yuji wants. Dice leaves and tells Yuji not to get killed. Marlene leans on the buggy, looking up at the sky. The nomads finally start moving on horseback, and Elena asks Yuji again about the ocean. Yuji says he’ll take her to see it one day, and he feels confident that he’ll be happy with this way of life. Off in the distance near the rocky area, cracks start forming on the ground, meaning the Land Whale isn’t far.

Dice is sitting in the driver’s seat, waiting for Marlene to do a last quick tune up of the engine. He talks to her, saying that the life Yuji chose is probably the best, and wouldn’t have guessed it before. Marlene doesn’t reply and just works, but when Dice said he originally figured it would be Marlene who would turn Yuji into a man, she gets angry at him and asks him if he only runs his mouth. Dice says he’s ready to go and is just waiting on her, the ground suddenly starts rumbling. They see a pillar of sand rise a short distance away, and they both drive off. With the nomads, Yuji sees the pillar of sand as well and realizes that a Blue is attacking Dice and Marlene. Marlene tries to shoot at it with the chain gun, but since it’s under the sand, they can’t hurt it. Marlene tries grenades next, to little effect. All the while Yuji is worried now, and Elena is concerned with Yuji. Elena’s father says that they can’t stop and need to keep going to put some distance between them and what’s happening. The caravan keeps moving, but Elena stops to see Yuji hasn’t moved with his horse yet. Yuji starts remembering his times with Marlene, while Elena calls out to him and holds her hand out to take it. Just before Yuji can, he hears the sound of the buggy getting tossed over and doesn’t know what happened. But the buggy is abandoned, even though the Land Whale tosses it a second time. Yuji keeps getting visions of Marlene, then with a blank look on his face, decides to turn around and head back to help. Elena calls out to Yuji and can’t believe he left her behind. Dice tosses his last grenade at the Land Whale, but it has little effect since it’s underground. Marlene realizes they need Yuji’s help with the AS he had, and she starts remembering his times in an AS. She shakes the thoughts off, and both start running again when the Land Whale attacks them again from behind a hill. They get pinned against a wall, but the Land Whale disappears underground again. It resurfaces to surround them with its body, but just before it can attack again, an AS round strikes it, and Dice realizes Yuji came after them. Yuji uses Sniper AS to draws the Land Whale's attention and lets it follow him. Marlene can’t believe what Yuji’s doing and goes after him. Yuji drives the Sniper AS backwards while firing at the Land Whale and heads to a mountain side behind him. Yuji abandons the AS, and it slams into the mountainside. The Land Whale slams into it head on at full speed, and after a moment, it doesn’t move. Yuji relaxes, thinking he killed it. But the Land Whale’s head comes out of the rock face, and Marlene shoots the core, killing it for sure. Yuji stares at Marlene, but she simply walks off while Dice thinks Yuji’s a crazy guy for what he did. The nomads keep going, and Elena’s father looks at his daughter quickly, seeing how disappointed and sad she is that Yuji isn’t coming with them. Later, Dice drives the buggy to Baikonur, with Yuji in the back. But Yuji doesn’t seem overly happy. The buggy stops at the edge of a hill, and Baikonur space base is in sight in a clearing up ahead down hill. Dice said he brought them like he said he would, and Yuji wonders if he’ll be able to see the ocean still. Marlene says he still can, once they get into space, and that he can see as much of it as he needs. Yuji laughs, confusing Marlene, and he agrees with her about seeing it. Surprisingly, Yuji is the one to insist on continuing, and both him and Marlene start their walk toward the base. Dice says to himself that he’ll see them around, and starts driving back the way he came, waving goodbye.

Commentary

With the end of this episode, we say goodbye to Dice, as I don’t think we’ll be seeing him again anytime soon. At least he’s alive for a change, unlike past side characters. Yuji deciding to stay with Elena was probably a logical decision, considering what he’s been through. Having Marlene pull a gun on him didn’t help. But of course, the situation becomes cliched again, as Yuji is forced to choose between staying with Marlene, or with Elena. Of course, Yuji chooses to go with Marlene, abandoning possible happiness with Elena. I can’t help but feel sorry for both Yuji and Elena, since they seemed to make a cute couple, but alas…it wasn’t meant to be. Then again, if Yuji did decide to stay with Elena, I doubt Marlene and Dice would be around, and there wouldn’t be a need for the rest of the series. Now Yuji and Marlene have made it to Baikonur space base, which means within an episode or two, the scenery could be changing fairly soon.
