Blue Gender
From director Masashi Abe (Casshan: Robot Hunter, Inuyasha), with character designs by Koji Watanabe (Bleach, Armitage III), comes the sci-fi horror story of Blue Gender. Yuji Kaido wants a normal life, but being diagnosed with an unknown AND incurable disease, he and others like him are put on ice in the year 2009 in hopes of a cure in the future. But he wakes up to a nightmare in the year 2031, where large insect-like creatures, known only as "The Blue" have infested the Earth, laying waste to the planet and killing a good chunk of the human population. He is rescued by Marlene Angel, a young woman from a Sleeper Recovery Team, sent from a space station in Earth's orbit called "Second Earth," who fight the Blue using mecha called Armor Shrikes. Together, Yuji must survive his quest to get to the station and eventually battle The Blue. But Yuji has a bigger role to play, since he's a key to a military project along with other "Sleepers" like himself. But even beyond that yet, his actions will determine whether the Earth, or humanity, will survive in general. Released in Japan in 1999, Blue Gender was released in the U.S. by FUNimation in 2001 and aired on Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" block in 2003. In 2002, the compilation movie Blue Gender: The Warrior was released in Japan, and it's also available in the U.S. from FUNimation.
