| Episode 8: The Day the Sun Disappeared

April 1, 2005
Two years earlier, an investigative team including Entouji, Kazuo, and Leo finds the battered Galeon, who opens its mouth to reveal a half-dead Guy, clutching the G-Stone. Leo took the G-Stone and the vast information within it to make Guy's cyborg body. This is explained as the GS-Ride system, the same power system for the Vehicle Robots and GaoGaiGar. Back in the present, a massive black cloud drifts over Tokyo, shrouding everything in darkness. At the Big Order Room, Mikoto explains that 99% of the cloud is identical to any other cloud in the sky. Taiga wonders if the Zonder plans to destroy the environment as Mikoto goes over the size and growth of the cloud. While Swan and Kazuo go over the problems occurring in the area, Entouji can't pinpoint where the core is in such a massive space. After assuring everyone that it is indeed a Zonder, Mamoru thinks back to before the cloud appeared. His friends were at a balloon festival with him, and Hana and Sunou were going for a trip. As they float off, Ushi comments that Sunou's balloon looks like a turd, no matter how you look at it. Mamoru senses a Zonder just before a zeppelin explodes, thick black smoke spreading in all directions from it. Guy reassures Mamoru that they'll stop the Zonder, with EnRyu volunteering himself and HyoRyu. HyoRyu disagrees, saying they're useless for an aerial situation. In addition, their engines could cause the cloud's chemicals to ignite from within if they entered it. Guy decides to head out in Stealth Gao, stating that it's his job to go. Underneath Tokyo Tower, Pasdar brings together the Machine Kings about the Zonder. Pizza announces it was his doing, showing how he found a man staring out at the sky and told him he'd let him become a cloud he loved so much. Smoke from the cigarette the man was smoking caused the black appearance. Pizza tells Pasdar that the cloud is impossible to enter thanks to a Plasma Barrier around it. GaiGar takes off with the StealthGao, entering the cloud's range. The electrical storm from the Plasma Barrier shocks GaiGar, and he wonders how a Zonder could make a 300 kilometer wide barrier. Entouji scans the information and tells them it's from static it's gathering on its exterior. Swan sees an air intake on one end, and Hyuuma thinks it's the best way inside the Zonder. GaiGar wraps around the cloud to reach the vent, and Mikoto warns that the electromagnetic and wind power could make him crash Stealth Gao. They're forced to go radio static, and Guy stares in shock at the inside of the cloud.
The 3G team wonder how Guy is doing, with many negative suggestions that get Mikoto upset. Hyuuma reassures how that a fool can't die so easily, just before Mamoru senses Guy within the cloud. HyoRyu thinks it's typical of Guy, Taiga agreeing with him, because Guy is a hero. Within the cloud, Guy drifts unconscious. He hears Mikoto's voice, and thinks back to a summer day when they were younger. She asks him how he could sleep like that, and reminds him of his pilot test. He remembers the space flight, EI-01, and the awakening as a cyborg. Mikoto tells him they're running late, and he says she reminds him of his mother. He asks what he should do, and Mikoto tells him to work at what he's doing at the moment. GaiGar uses Final Fusion, and then remembers fights with the Zonders. He thanks Mikoto for her help, and she gives him a necklace with her picture in it. She tells him never to forget, and he wakes up within the cloud. Guy opens his chest plate, looking at the necklace nestled within. Standing up, he sees the body of EI-09 before him. The GaoBrace calls Galeon to him, and they form GaiGar once more. GaiGar leaps onto the body, climbing up to find the Zonder itself. He sees all the hot air balloons, floating amongst EI-09's core. Mikoto is awakened by a call from Guy, telling them to release the mobile carriers to his position in the cloud. The Mirror Catapult launch EnRyu and HyoRyu, and the Gao Machines soon follow. The pair form ChoRyuJin, as GaoGaiGar combines. The Dividing Driver and Eraser Head are fired behind it, and ChoRyuJin aims the Head for the cloud as GaoGaiGar parts a section of it with the Dividing Driver. The hole in the cloud lets the balloons drift into the hot air, where Leo in the mobile laboratory picks them up. As the core collapses, the team tells Guy to use Hell and Heaven. As he approaches, EI-09 fights back with a flurry of missiles, which do nothing against GaoGaiGar's approach. As GaoGaiGar rips out the core and escapes, ChoRyuJin eliminates the cloud's explosion with the Eraser Head. After Mamoru heals the Zonder, Guy wonders about what he saw. When he grabbed the core, he found himself surrounded by strange pyramidal objects drifting around it.
Yet another episode with a lack of action, but a decent amount of intrigue to fill the gaps. A decent amount of Guy's flashback, however, seems like just that; it's Episode 8, is there really any reason to once-over what GaoGaiGar can do? Hell, the cyborg section was already mentioned in the intro anyway. Pizza's idea was definitely the best yet, although it would seem that EI-09 was not all that it appeared to be. I find it sort of funny how the chemicals in a cigarette would be able to cause such a devastating explosion, but it was crippling none the less. The only thing that really caught my attention here was how Pizza acted without Pasdar's authority. Despite this, Pasdar doesn't argue the point. It would seem Pizza is extremely trusted by Pasdar, or at least has some level of authority above his would-be peers. Guy also fell out of Galeon for no apparent reason, but I can only see that as an excuse to have him form GaiGar when the flashbacks were coming to a halt. So now the cliffhanger question; what DID Guy see in EI-09? It threw them at him as what seemed to be a hopeless defense, so they must've been much more than just weapons.
Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
