| Episode 9: Element Z0

On a busy street, a Zonder motorcycle streaks in between traffic. It goes so fast, it causes windows to shatter and cars to veer into each other. Entouji works diligently on his computer, as the Zonder leaves devastation
in its wake. Taiga is shocked to hear that the Zonders have an elemental property, and Leo explains to him what they now call Element Z0. Entouji tells Taiga that with Element Z0, he can make a detector to trace Zonders. Entouji soon completes the detector, calling it the Z Sensor. He voices disapproval of having to modify most of it as a backpack, but Kazuo assures him it's good enough. Taiga wonders where Hyuuma is at the moment, and seems agitated that he always goes off on his own. Mamoru and his friends wait at a crosswalk amongst a pile-up of cars, who talk to him about the rogue Motorcycle in the city. By destroying the traffic lights, it's causing mass havoc. A motorcycle cop watches them as they see a Delivery Girl get denied a tip for being late. A reporter talks about the havoc, just as the Zonder shoots by and destroys the camera. The Police pursue the Zonder, only to have it 180 and use their car as a ramp. Hyuuma follows close behind on the GunDober, jumping streets and entering the city. He's shocked to see it scale a building, but uses GunDober's hover mode to do the same. He ends up hitting a model poster, and the Vehicle Robots come in to pull him out. The police officer from before watches from a distance. Back in the Big Order Room, Mamoru talks to Guy about a Zonder's ability to change to their original form if they wish. Hyuuma had caught a cold from the chase, and Taiga thinks he deserves it for being rash. Swan, Hyuuma, and Kazuo pursue a man who'd been deemed a suspect, a bike enthusiast who built his own cycle, although Kazuo thinks it was unwise to take the Z Sensor without permission or testing. Hyuuma says he plans to be paid overtime for trying out the sensor. The three pursue the suspect on their own bikes, but the Zonder intercepts him and wipes out his bike. The Zonder vanishes just as quickly as it appeared, and Hyuuma sees a bike gang in front of them. He suspects the gang leader, who was already on the list, since he conveniently showed up. Hana and her cousin sit in line to a Bike Festival, spending the night before it opens. Hana clearly doesn't show the same interest as her cousin, but it's soon interrupted once more by the Zonder.
The Zonder knocks over everyone as it speeds past, and Hana's cousin frets over her spilt curry. The trio are still in pursuit of the motorcycle, only to have the sensor go blank again. They find the gang knocked out, and one of the members muttering about the wild bike. Kazuo picks up the Zonder again, coming toward them at incredible speed, and disappearing again. The police officer heads toward them, and Hyuuma remembers him from before. As he approaches, Hyuuma warns Swan he's the Zonder, and waits nervously. Taiga is clearly upset that Hyuuma took the sensor, and sends HyoRyu and EnRyu to his location to back him up. Guy and Mamoru travel in the pair, as the officer questions Hyuuma. Hyuuma tells him that hiding in the city is very safe. The police officer is confused, as Hyuuma tells him to drop the disguise, only to have the Zonder again jump into the scene. The Vehicle Robots arrive just in time to knock the Zonder aside, saving Hyuuma from being crushed. As the Zonder reforms and takes off, Guy has EnRyu and HyoRyu prepare the Pencil Launcher. Hana asks her cousin what they'll do if the motorcycle returns, and she replies that she'll find out what kind of model it is. The bike returns to the Bike Expo, assimilating the bikes and assuming humanoid form. HyoRyu and EnRyu turn into their own human forms, going in to attack EI-10 with their tonfa. It's too quick, however, dodging and entangling the pair in its finger tentacles. Guy calls in Galeon, forming GaiGar while the others try to get out the civilians. Mamoru notices Hana's cousin calling for her. Using the Drill Gao, GaiGar breaks EnRyu and HyoRyu free, and forms GaoGaiGar. The Broken Magnum cuts through EI-10's tendrils, shattering it to pieces. The parts soon become hundreds of motorcycles, riding over GaoGaiGar like ants. At first taking them as a hassle, Guy soon sees that they had tied him up. Mamoru finds Hana as a wall collapses, and a Police Car streaks by and saves him in a blur. Inside the car, it tells Mamoru it will take care of Hana for him, but GaoGaiGar needs him there. The motorcycles begin flying into every port they can reach on GaoGaiGar, detonating within it. Guy tries to stay calm, looking for which one's the real one, and Hyuuma can't see a thing through the sensor with all the scatter Z0. Mamoru heads to GaoGaiGar, just as it shatters the lines. Mamoru points out EI-10, who had been pretending to be damaged. GaoGaiGar tries to hit it with the Broken Magnum, but HyoRyu catches it in the Pencil Launcher's net. EnRyu clears out the other cycles, as GaoGaiGar uses Hell and Heaven on EI-10. Mamoru heals the Zonder shortly after, and it's revealed to be the Delivery Girl from earlier. The police car drops off Hana behind her complaining cousin, and Taiga says that EI-10 is a true Zonder that must be studied carefully. Entouji thinks of why EI-10 would spread so much Z0, and Leo says that at this rate, everyone will become a Zonder.
A bit more of a balanced episode, with more 'find-the-Zonder' antics in the form of a guessing game. Although the police officer was definitely showing up too much to be the Zonder, I wouldn't have guessed the delivery girl. This is the first episode where there is no mention of a Machine King, though It'd be an easy guess that EI-10 is Primarda's work. The battle with EI-10 is sort of anti-climatic, all the way down to HyoRyu using the Pencil Launcher to stop it, which has to be the corniest weapon yet on the show. The Eraser Head at least has a great purpose, the Pencil Launcher just seems to be stylized net gun. Does that even need to be named? The Z Sensor on the other hand, was just useless, seeing how it did nothing but trace the Zonders at a range so close you usually noticed them by then. On a side note, the Lilliputian attempt on Guy's life by EI-10 must've been a minor one at that, if GaoGaiGar could've broken free at any time and chose not to. Once again, this episode leaves prior questions unanswered and adds another to the mix. Who was the Police Car that saved Mamoru? It addressed him as Lieutenant, his 3G rank, and had 3G listed on its dashboard, so its origin is clear. It's odd to not have something loudly introduced however. The set of chase episodes were interesting, but if they continue this way they'll quickly lose their appeal.
Overall Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
