Turn 18: Second Decisive Battle of Tokyo

Review by Chris Guanche

September 3, 2008

Summary

Lelouch orders his forces to capture the Tokyo settlement before Schneizel's reinforcements arrive. Kallen is happy to hear that Zero has come back, but Gino tells her that as long as he's around, her wish won't be granted. On the Avalon, Nina tries to pilot the Lancelot Conquista, but Lloyd reminds her that she's a scientist, not a pilot. Suzaku walks up and asks her if she has the courage to use or not use the FLEIJA. Lelouch tells Tohdoh to have Asahina and Chiba gain aerial superiority over the government building. Meanwhile, Rolo's ground team, disguised as Britannian soldiers, moves in to infiltrate. Suzaku launches in the Lancelot Conquista and vows to make Lelouch atone for his sins, so he tells Lelouch to cease his operation. He claims that he's carrying a highly destructive warhead, but Lelouch says he doesn't believe him. Jeremiah then slams into Suzaku with the modified Sutherland Sieg. He unleashes a barrage of missiles, but Suzaku destroys them with his hadron blaster. On the Ikaruga, Rakshata complains that because the Sutherland Sieg uses the Siegfried's system, it's a one off unit that can't be mass produced. She wonders why Jeremiah and Guilford have joined them. Guilford wonders why he's fighting his own forces, and Lelouch orders him to join with Jeremiah and kill Suzaku. Suzaku tells Jeremiah he doesn't want to fight and get everyone involved. Guilford joins the fight against Suzaku, and Nina pleads with Suzaku to fire the FLEIJA. Lelouch fires the Shinkirou's cannon, and Suzaku dodges attacks from three angles, but he's caught by Jeremiah. Gino appears with the Tristan and attacks Jeremiah, only to come under attack from Guilford's Vincent Commander Type. Gino comments that the Orange allegations appear to be true, and Jeremiah responds that orange is the color of his loyalty. On the ground, Milly's news team runs away from the battle, and Lelouch wonders if Schneizel has figured out what he's doing. Inside the government building, Rolo's team keeps climbing upward. Lelouch thinks to himself that once Nunnally is safe he won't need Rolo, and Rolo thinks to himself that once he finds Nunnally, he'll kill her. Sayoko appears and gives Rolo some news. Nearby, Nunnally doesn't want to leave, but Rohmeyer tells her they have orders from Schneizel. In the sky, Chiba is nearly killed by a Glaston Knights' Gareth, but Asahina saves her at the last second. Nearby, Guilford destroys a Vincent Ward while Lelouch fights Gino and Suzaku fights Jeremiah. Suzaku asks Lelouch if he's the reason the battle has started, but Lelouch tells him he's just a traitor. Anya arrives and slams the Mordred into the Shinkirou. She fires her stark hadron cannons at point blank range, and Lelouch knows his absolute protection territory can't hold out forever. Nunnally is loaded onto the escape shuttle, and Rohmeyer gives orders to have Kallen executed. Kallen's executioner is instead killed by Sayoko, who frees Kallen and takes her over to the modified Guren SEITEN. Britannian forces destroy several Gefjun disturbers, and Schneizel believes this will turn things in his favor. As the lights come back on, Kinoshita's Akatsuki is seriously damaged. Lelouch holds out against Anya, but she has a Geass reaction and falls away. Immediately after, the Valkyrie team grabs the Shinkirou with its slash harkens, and Luciano moves in for the kill.

Kallen gets into the cockpit of the Guren SEITEN and tells Sayoko she'll save Lelouch. The Guren SEITEN smashes through the building and zips around the battlefield at high speed. Luciano tries to drill into the absolute protection territory, and Ohgi tells him that Charles' flagship is on the way. Schneizel doesn't think Charles will come to Area 11 because he no longer cares about reality or the present day. Tamaki's team arrives to back up Lelouch, but his Akatsuki is destroyed by Luciano and he's forced to eject. Lelouch tries to use that moment to fire his cannon, but Luciano destroys the cannon with his lance. Just then, Kallen arrives and destroys the Valkyrie team instantly. Lloyd is shocked that someone can pilot the Guren SEITEN at 60% output, and Rakshata is furious that Lloyd and Cecile modified the Guren. Luciano attacks Kallen, but she easily dodges and attacks with her wire-guided arm, destroying several Vincent Wards in the process. Luciano tells Kallen that the everyday killing of people is a crime, but killing them on the battlefield makes one a hero. He moves in close to attack, but she grabs hold of him and uses the radiation wave to destroy the Percival and kill him. Lelouch says they need to get Nunnally, but Suzaku counters that he won't allow that. He attacks, but Kallen blocks his hadron blast. Guilford attacks Gino, and he says to Kallen that she obviously chose the Kouzuki name over Stadtfeld. Gino wants Suzaku to leave Kallen to him, but Suzaku says he can't allow that. Tohdoh prepares to attack Schneizel's fleet, but just then Asahina calls with Kinoshita's testimony and says Zero can't be trusted, so he's going to restrain Rolo in the government building. On the Ikaruga, Cornelia uses micro explosives to blast out of her detention cell, but Ohgi wonders if it's Viletta who escaped. Nunnally's shuttle prepares to escape, and Rolo boards a nearby Sutherland. Lelouch is informed that Nunnally has been found, and he tells Kallen to finish Suzaku off. Kallen attacks and heavily damages the Lancelot. Nina pleads with him again to use the FLEIJA, and he realizes he can't win. Elsewhere, Sayoko takes over Nunnally's shuttle. As Kallen moves in for the killing blow, Suzaku realizes that if he dies, it'll be atonement for everything he's done. However, his Geass command kicks in, so he dodges Kallen's attack. With no other weapons left, he fires the FLEIJA, which sets off a massive explosion. The shockwave expands and consumes the government building and everything around it. Guilford pushes Lelouch to safety, at the cost of his own life. After the explosion, Lelouch calls Rolo and says he wants to speak with Nunnally. Rolo tells Lelouch that she didn't make it, and Lelouch repeats that he wants to speak with her. Rolo says she's dead, and Lelouch calls him a liar. Outside, much of the Tokyo settlement has been wiped away.

Commentary

Following on a thread that's been developing since the first season, Nina's FLEIJA bomb is finally fired, and the destructive results are obvious. Much of the Tokyo settlement has been wiped off the map. Guilford and Asahina are killed in the explosion, and while Nunnally is presumed dead, I don't believe she is. The bloodthirsty Luciano also meets his end, and it's fitting that he's killed by Kallen. She finally gets back into the action after being a prisoner for about seven episodes, but the way she does it is a bit bothersome. The new Guren is so ridiculously overpowered now that I felt like I was watching a battle from Gundam SEED DESTINY rather than Code Geass. We see that Suzaku is still looking for any excuse to die, but unfortunately for him, his "live" Geass won't let him do that. That leads to him unwillingly firing the FLEIJA, which he'll surely feel guilty over. With Nunnally presumed dead, it's an obvious blow to Lelouch, because her being gone removes his entire reason for all that he's been doing. Things will also get worse because the attack on the Geass Order is coming back to bite him.
