Turn 19: Betrayal

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Aboard the flagship Great Britannia, Knight of Twelve Monica Kruszewski reports to Charles that a large explosion was detected in the Tokyo settlement. She asks if it's ok for them to stay at Kaminejima Island, and he tells her to leave everything to Schneizel. Radio reports estimate casualties of 10 million, and Nina can't believe it. Floating above the crater in the Lancelot Conquista, Suzaku can't believe he did that. Lelouch calls Tohdoh and tells him to look for Nunnally. Tohdoh tries to point out that Asahina and others are dead, but Lelouch yells at Tohdoh that he doesn't care. On the Ikaruga, Ohgi encounters Viletta in the hallway. On the ship's top deck, Diethard is surprised to discover that Cornelia is the escapee, and he wonders if Zero had anything to do with it. He tells his men to aim for Cornelia's legs, but just then a Britannian envoy craft lands on the deck. Diethard is then shocked to see Schneizel come out of the craft. Lelouch keeps yelling at everyone to find Nunnally, but Tohdoh orders all units to fall back and regroup at Makuhari. Jeremiah grapples onto the Shinkirou and takes Lelouch back to the ship. Zhou informs Li that there's a cease fire in Tokyo, and he wonders if Zero arranged that. In his room, Lelouch asks where Nunnally is, and Rolo says Lelouch has him now. When Lelouch sees the locket on Rolo's cell phone he flies into a rage and says he was going to give the locket to Nunnally. He calls Rolo a cheap impostor and says he hates him and tried to kill him. He then tells Rolo to leave and never show his face again. On the Avalon, Lloyd tells Nina that she has to decide whether she'll give up science to keep her heart, or give up her heart to devote herself to science. She collapses in tears and says she killed everyone. Chiba tries to call Lelouch and gets no response, so Diethard says they'll have to negotiate with Schneizel on their own. Distracted, Tohdoh thinks about Asahina telling him of the massacre at the Geass Order. Chiba asks Diethard why he didn't capture Schneizel, and he explains that the Mordred escorting Schneizel is armed with the FLEIJA warhead. Jeremiah searches the crater and spots Suzaku at its base. Diethard, Tamaki, Chiba and Tohdoh arrive and meet with Schneizel, Cornelia and Kanon. Jeremiah thanks Suzaku for saving him earlier and wonders if they were destined to become enemies. At Ashford, which has been turned into an emergency shelter, Rivalz is overjoyed to see Milly. Schneizel says he knows why Zero won't come, and Diethard comments that he talks like he knows him. Schneizel then reveals to them that Zero is his younger brother, Lelouch Vi Britannia. Diethard writes it off as a joke, and Schneizel tells them about Lelouch's Geass power. Tamaki asks for proof, and Ohgi walks in and confirms it's true.

Rolo sits in the hangar by the Shinkirou. Ohgi states that Lelouch has been using them all as pawns up to now. Diethard points out that Lelouch has accomplished much and that Geass is a valuable weapon against Britannia, but Ohgi says Lelouch didn't just use it on Britannia. Cornelia says that Lelouch used Geass on Euphemia to make her massacre the Japanese, but Tamaki doesn't believe it. Schneizel then plays an excerpt of Lelouch's conversation with Suzaku where he admits to using Geass on Euphemia. Tamaki thinks the recording is fake, and Kanon presents them with a long file of all the people they suspect Lelouch used Geass on, including the former commanders of the Japanese Liberation Front. Schneizel says he can't guarantee none of them are under the effects of Geass. Kanon adds that they informed Lelouch about FLEIJA before it was fired, and Tohdoh recalls Asahina's words that Zero couldn't be trusted. Ohgi says he wanted to believe in Zero, and Tamaki calls Zero a bastard. Schneizel asks them to hand over Lelouch, and Ohgi agrees on the condition that Japan is liberated. C.C. tries to get Lelouch to take his clothes off because she thinks he's injured, and Kallen walks in. She says Ohgi wants him to come to a ship warehouse, but she doesn't know why. She gets the wrong idea about Lelouch and C.C., but he explains that C.C. has lost her memories. In the elevator, Kallen thinks to herself that Lelouch has lost everything. She tells him that she spoke with Nunnally while she was a captive, but their conversation is interrupted when all the Black Knights draw guns on them in the warehouse. Ohgi tells Lelouch that they know all about his Geass, and Diethard prepares to film Zero's death. Lelouch wonders what he should do, and Kallen says they're being too one-sided. Kallen asks Lelouch what she means to him, and he spots Schneizel in the corner. He takes off his mask and tells everyone that they were just pawns, with Kallen being an elite pawn. Kallen cries and walks away, and he quietly tells her to live on. The Black Knights open fire, but just then Rolo lands in front of Lelouch in the Shinkirou and rescues him. Rolo uses Geass to freeze everyone's minds and escape with Lelouch. Anya gives chase in the Mordred, but Rolo uses Geass to seem as if he's darting around her. Lelouch tells Rolo that using Geass at such a large range will be too much for his heart to handle. A squad of Akatsukis gives chase with orders to destroy the Shinkirou, but Rolo uses Geass to freeze the pilots' minds, causing them to crash in the water. Although Lelouch can't hear him, Rolo says that he's always been a tool - first for the Geass Order, then for Lelouch. But now he feels that he's become a human because he's acting of his own will. After destroying a Britannian ship, Rolo lands in the forest. He asks Lelouch if he was lying before about wanting to kill him, and Lelouch says he was. Rolo says he knows everything about Lelouch and dies. Still standing inside the crater, Suzaku laughs maniacally. After burying Rolo, Lelouch realizes he still has one reason to live, even though he's lost everything. On the Great Britannia, Charles declares that he'll use the Ragnarok junction to destroy the old world and create a new one.

Commentary

Something that's been brewing for a long time finally comes to the surface, and that's the Black Knights betraying Lelouch. Putting aside everything that Schneizel revealed, I think they would've betrayed Lelouch just for finding out that he's a Britannian prince. However, Schneizel and Kanon were certainly playing dirty by using recordings of Lelouch out of context. Also, the Black Knights seem to give in and believe Schneizel a bit too easily. They don't even bother to get Lelouch's side - by then, they're just ready to kill him. This would certainly be bad for Lelouch. but luckily he's saved by Rolo. Yes, Rolo does heroically rescue him, at the cost of his own life, and Lelouch plays along with Rolo's last words. I'm not sure if this death redeems Rolo though, and it's certainly a better death than he deserved given that he killed Shirley. This episode also introduced us to Monica, the Knight of Twelve, and we see that Charles is finally ready to initiate his big plan. Things won't be easy for Lelouch now that he's on his own.
