Stage 22: Bloodstained Euphie

Review by Chris Guanche

August 19, 2007

Summary

Several nobles discuss how Euphemia's actions could affect them, but their conversation is interrupted by Bartley and Darlton, who says he has evidence of the financial benefits they've received from Kyoto. Bartley claims that he can now eliminate those who manipulated Clovis because Euphemia's announcement has tossed them into confusion. At a sports stadium Suzaku comments that more than 200,000 people have signed up for the SAZ, and Euphemia says it's due to him being a representative for the Japanese. Suzaku thinks it's due to Euphemia's announcement, and she asks him to continue helping her in the future. Schneizel speaks to Cornelia in a video conference and says that the SAZ will reduce support for the Area 11 terrorists and restore public order, but Cornelia is against the plan. However, she sent Darlton to assist Euphemia since the plan has already been announced. Elsewhere, several Kyoto members question whether they can accept the Japan that Britannia is offering, and Kirihara notes that the current situation is the result of their resistance. Kaguya wonders what Zero and the Black Knights will do. Elsewhere, Tohdoh explains that they have a problem because their supporters and several members have expressed interest in signing up for the SAZ. Rakshata comments that the SAZ has obvious appeal because it was created by an established princess like Euphemia, whereas the Black Knights are led my a mysterious masked man. Ohgi suggests that the Black Knights join the SAZ, and when other members disagree, Diethard points out that they'll be branded the enemies of freedom and equality if they don't join. At the Tokyo settlement, Rivalz drops Lelouch off so he can meet with Shirley. Lelouch sees a noble beating a young Japanese boy over the SAZ, so he walks over and inserts himself in the argument. A bodyguard tells Lelouch to back off, but he uses Geass to order the bodyguard home. The Geass activates when Lelouch tells the noble he should die, but he closes his eye so that the order doesn't go through. Watching from nearby, Shirley is confused as to why Lelouch would save an Eleven if he's Zero, or maybe he saved the boy precisely because he's Zero. At Mt. Fuji, Darlton meets with Kirihara and offers to work with him, but on the condition that the Kyoto House dissolve and cease its support for the Black Knights. Later, Nunnally asks Lelouch if he's worried about anything, like what's going on with Euphemia. The next day, the crowd fills the stadium where Euphemia will make the official announcement to open the SAZ. Just as she is about to begin, the Gawain flies in with Lelouch standing atop it. Kirihara wonders what Lelouch is planning, and he's worried that if his real identity is revealed, people will mistake everything as a Britannian plot. As the Gawain lands, Lelouch says he has to speak with Euphemia privately. Lelouch is scanned for weapons, and while Suzaku disagrees with Euphemia being alone with Zero, she assures him it'll be ok. Outside the SAZ, the entire Black Knights force lies in wait. Inside the G-1, Lelouch takes off his mask and pulls out a ceramic needle gun. Euphemia says he won't shoot at her, and he explains that she'll be the shooter. Outside, Suzaku looks at the Gawain and has a Geass reaction. C.C. realizes he can see her and wonders if it's due to the incident at Kaminejima, so she opens the cockpit.

Lelouch says that the ceremony is being broadcast around the world and asks what would happen if she shot him. She says a revolt would break out, and he notes that Zero would become a martyr. Euphemia thinks that's nonsense because they can work together on the new Japan, but he says she's just unilaterally forcing her opinions on others like Clovis did. Lelouch says that there can be only one messiah and that people will eventually realize she's a fake. He begins to hand her the gun, but he suddenly drops to his knees when he feels pain in his left eye. Outside, C.C. feels the same pain and drops to her knees. Suzaku touches her and sees a vision of Marianne, which causes him to faint. Several bodyguards run over to C.C., and she touches them and makes them see skulls. Lelouch pushes Euphemia away and yells at her to stop pitying him. He says he doesn't want her sympathy and will achieve things by his own power. Euphemia then tells him that she's given up her royal name and claim to the succession of the throne, which is the price she paid for her selfish request. He asks if she easily threw away her name for his sake, and she tells him it's for Nunnally. She says that Nunnally's wish to be with Lelouch is what reminded her of what's important to her and what she wants to protect. Lelouch laughs and says that despite her recklessness, she's managed to achieve everything in the end. Euphemia asks Lelouch if he'll work with her, and he agrees. She asks him if he really thought she would shoot him if he threatened her, and he explains that no one can disobey one of his orders. Euphemia writes it off as a joke, and Lelouch says it's the truth, even if he gave an order like "kill the Japanese." Suddenly, Euphemia comes under the control of Geass and tries to resist the order. Euphemia falls to her knees and says she doesn't want to kill them, but eventually she gives in. Lelouch realizes that he's become like Mao and can't turn off his Geass. He tries to order her to forget that command, but it's too late as she grabs the needle gun and runs off. Schneizel calls Bartley and says he's heading back to the homeland. He asks about the test specimen (Jeremiah), and Bartley says there's only so much they can do in Area 11. Euphemia runs outside and announces that she wants all the Japanese to die. If they don't all commit suicide, she wants the soldiers to kill them. Lelouch tries to stop her, but several guards block him. Euphemia then shoots an elderly man in the crowd and orders the soldiers to open fire. Darlton tries to stop Euphemia, so she shoots him in the gut with the needle gun The ground soldiers and Sutherland pilots then open fire on all Japanese, including even Suzaku. Lelouch runs through the crowd and is shocked by what's happening as a result of his Geass. Darlton staggers in front him with a gun and asks what he did to Euphemia. Diethard picks up the live feed and broadcasts it to the Internet. On the Gawain, C.C. tells Lelouch she's surprised he went so far, but he explains he didn't intend to use Geass. The Avalon picks up Suzaku, and he immediately launches in the Lancelot. At Mt. Fuji, Kaguya criticizes the other Kyoto members for trying to save only themselves. Lelouch addresses the Black Knights and orders them to attack the Britannians and rescue the Japanese.

Commentary

Talk about a change in mood. In a split second, things go from exceedingly positive with the establishment of the SAZ to an all-out massacre. Before that, we get hints that things aren't going well with Lelouch's Geass, mainly when he encounters that noble on the street. During that incident, we see that Shirley is still trying to confront Lelouch about being Zero, but she's hesitant to just come out and ask him directly. Speaking of Geass, it seems that Suzaku now has the ability to sense Geass-connected people, which C.C. presumes is a result of what happened at Kaminejima. On other fronts, it looks like Bartley is making use out of Jeremiah the loser by conducting weird experiments on him. Of course, it'll make him even more insane than he was the last time we saw him. Lelouch is just on the cusp of achieving everything he wants, and he ruins it all with a stupid, offhanded comment. Now he's got a massacre unfolding, and the blood of all those innocent people is on his hands. Atoning for something like that won't be easy.
