Set in an alternate future, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion focuses on a conquered Japan. Directed by Goro Taniguchi (Planetes), the series features character designs by CLAMP and mechanical designs by Akira Yasuda (Turn A Gundam, Overman King Gainer). Code Geass premiered on Japanese TV in October 2006 and ran for 25 episodes. Seven years have passed since the Holy Britannia Empire invaded Japan, and the Japanese (now called Elevens for Japan's new name, Area 11) are oppressed through the use of mecha known as Knightmare Frames. Britannian student Lelouch Lamperouge hates the Empire, and the acquisition of a mysterious power known as "Geass" gives him his tool for revenge. But Lelouch's path to revenge as the black knight Zero isn't easy, because his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi is now a Britannian soldier. In addition to the TV series, Sunrise has produced DVD bonus "picture dramas," which are short clips set before the series and during episodes. The second season, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, is currently airing in Japan and picks up a year after the first season. The first season is now airing on Adult Swim and is available on DVD from Bandai Entertainment.
