Summary

In 2009 a.t.b., 9-year-old Lelouch Lamperouge carries his blind and paralyzed sister Nunnally on his back as he climbs the steps to a Shinto shrine in Japan. Lelouch explains that a shrine is a Japanese version of a church, and Nunnally asks if the Pope is the emperor of Japan. Lelouch says that Japan has an elected prime minister and that it's just a coincidence that Prime Minister Genbu Kururugi's home is a Shinto shrine. After reaching the top of the stairs, Lelouch is shocked to find that they'll be living in a shabby storeroom. Nunnally asks what the room is like, and Lelouch lies and says it has white walls and decorated windows. Lelouch spots somebody and demands that they come forward. A boy named Suzaku Kururugi calls Lelouch arrogant and asks if Britannia plans to colonize Japan. Lelouch counters that Japan isn't much different and says that Suzaku should ask his father about that. Suzaku asks where the white walls and decorated windows are, and Lelouch charges forward. Suzaku easily knocks down Lelouch and begins to beat him up, when Nunnally cries out and asks Suzaku to stop. She says she'll do anything he asks, and he realizes that she's blind. Suzaku panics and quickly apologizes before running out of the room. Nunnally asks who that was, and Lelouch tells her it was Prime Minister Kururugi's son.

Commentary

The first Code Geass picture drama gives us a short story set before Britannia's invasion of Japan in 2010 a.t.b. Although the first episode of the TV series shows Lelouch and Suzaku as childhood friends, this clip shows us that it wasn't always that way. Here, Suzaku is an angry young boy who doesn't take kindly to people being in his old room. He especially doesn't like Britannians and seems to have a very low opinion of them. The picture drama literally lives up to its name, since it's a series of nicely drawn moving still pictures with sound effects and voice work. Although it's short, it provides some nice insight into the early days of Lelouch and Suzaku's friendship.
