Episode 23: Musiy's Pursuit

Review by Brian Shea

Summary

At Drake Castle Shot visits Musiy to see if her wounds have healed. Shot tells her he believes in her Aura Power and tells her of the failure of those from Upper Earth to defeat the Zelana. In the forest Riml asks Shou why he came back to Byston Well from Upper Earth. Shou says he seeks to eliminate Aura battlers entirely from Byston Well so it will be peaceful again. At the castle Musiy asks Feui to team up with her. Riml practices piloting the Fou with Shou, Keen and Marvel accompanying her. Shou and Marvel are impressed with how good a pilot she's been. Annoyed by the comment, Keen shows off with the Dana O'Shee. Feui, Musiy and her brothers prepare to leave the castle. Shot, talking to Zet is surprised that she chose Feui instead of Allen. Riml struggles docking the Fou to the Zelana but receives help from the Dunbine. Feui leads Musiy to the sea, telling her that he believes the Zelana moved positions. The Zelana continues on, and everyone realizes that Keen hasn't returned yet. Keen has trouble flying away in the Dana O'Shee after damaging it and the enemy finds her. The enemy's Doro units attack the Dana O'Shee relentlessly and Feui soon joins in with his Leprechaun, hoping to lure the Zelana out. Shou arrives in the Dunbine to help. Musiy tells her fellow troops to flee and act if they were defeated.

The Zelana hides from the enemy on the ground. Nie finds Riml awake, acting as a lookout even though he told her to sleep. He decides he'll rest instead. Keen wonders if their hideout is being attacked while they hide. Musiy meanwhile sneakily pilots her Virunvee through the water to shore and gets out. She manages to spot the Zelana and sees Riml on the bridge. She reports back to Feui, telling him and her brothers to wait until she's rescued Riml, then to immediately strike the Zelana. They head out towards the Zelana's hiding place. Riml sees them, and goes to the dock, telling Doroburu that Nie told her to scout the enemy. Before he's able to stop her she heads out in the Dana O'Shee and attacks the enemy. Realizing what happened, everyone gets ready for battle, unaware that Musiy has infiltrated the ship. Riml has trouble with Feui's Leprechaun, but luckily the Dunbine and Bozune appear to help. Marvel blows up one of the Doros, killing Musiy's brothers. Feui fires a grenade at the Dunbine, triggering a large explosion. Musiy eavesdrops on a conversation between Keen and Doroburu, realizing that Riml already left on the Dana O'Shee. Shou asks Feui why he helps Drake and Feui tells him as an out of work actor on Upper Earth he's glad to be in this position on Byston Well. The Leprechaun ensnares the Dunbine with multiple wires, then pulls the Dunbine towards it, trying to destroy it with a grenade. The Dunbine tears through the wires at just the right moment, then deflects the grenade, which ends up hitting the Leprechaun, destroying it. Musiy retreats alone. Riml apologizes to Nie, who tells her to go back to Laas Wau. Everyone supports Riml, but Nie is still angry. Nie decides to let her stay aboard, but punches her in the face as punishment.

Commentary

Riml continues to head out without permission, this time stealing the Dana O'Shee from Keen. In the end though that's probably a good thing, as Riml wasn't around on the Zelana when Musiy infiltrated it. Speaking of Musiy, things seem to really be going bad for her. First her father dies, now it appears that both her brothers have been killed too. At least they didn't die from some stupid accident this time. This episode sheds a little more light on Feui, the most minor of the three Upper Earthlings serving Drake, and then kills him, something which seems to be a Tomino tradition (just like mecha theft). Tomonori Kogawa's a really good character designer, but I was somewhat disappointed that he made Feui look so much like Shou. Oh well, in the end he wasn't all that major a character so I guess it doesn't matter.
