Summary

As theEND continues its Bascude Crisis attack, Renton begs for his sister to help him. The Nirvash typeZERO’s compact drive then lights up brilliantly, and Eureka notices Renton is now staring at it. She yells for him not to leave her and places her hand over his on the drive. The Nirvash’s eyes then glow orange, as they did when it initiated the Seven Swell, and Renton passes out as the Nirvash and theEND penetrate the side of the Coralian. As Hilda escorts Matthieu’s Terminus typeR606 back to the Gekko, missiles fired from the Izumo close on them. She evades, and on the Izumo an officer explains that the trapar interfered with the missiles’ guidance systems. Upon seeing the Gekko, Captain Jurgens orders the lasers to be used instead, but those miss as well, curving around the Coralian instead of heading straight to the Gekko. Jurgens realizes this, and adjusts the fire his guns along the curvature of the Coralian, only nearly missing the Gekko on his second shot. Mischa reports that she’s lost all life signs from the Nirvash, and Gidget says that she can no longer see them on radar. On the Izumo, Dominick argues with the captain that they have to retrieve theEND, but Jurgens says they only way they can win is by defeating the Gekko ship-to-ship. Aboard the Gekko, Holland orders Hilda and Matthieu to be recovered, and then tells Ken-Goh to go to DEFCON-1 after they are retrieved. Mischa calls Holland over to the radar screen, where two Nirvash signals are present. Renton wakes up in his Bellforest classroom, but with his teacher and all his classmates as deformed statues. The lecture is about butterflies, and as his teacher continues to talk, a chalk drawing of a butterfly comes to life and flies across the room. Renton continues to hallucinate, next seeing his classroom as a tiny box as he sits in a deserted wasteland. Suddenly, he is back in the class room, which begins to implode around him. Aboard the Gekko, Mischa has pinpointed the Nirvash and confirms the vital signs of both Renton and Eureka, although the signals suggest he is dreaming and that Eureka is trying to match her brain waves to his. Another shot from the Izumo nearly hits the Gekko, and Holland orders DEFCON-1 as Hilda and Matthieu return to the flight deck. As they round the Coralian, the Izumo comes into view. With the Gekko in his sights, Jurgens orders all cannons to fire.

Jurgens fires, but a sudden wave of trapar throws the shot off course. Ken-Goh takes the opportunity and returns fire, but misses. The Izumo closes the distance on a collision course, and the Gekko moves out of the way. Both Holland and Jurgens realize that a close-range attack will limit the Coralian’s effects, so they both plan to attack as they pass each other. Both captains order all missiles fired, and they collide in a massive explosion. Inside the Coralian, Renton is running down a hallway, trying to avoid an approaching darkness. He ducks into a bathroom, but then sees himself inside a tiny room. He is then pushed through a stall door into a giant toilet by Anemone. In the classroom from before, Eureka sees the butterfly and follows it, calling out Renton’s name. Outside, the battle between the Izumo and the Gekko continues, with the Gekko taking a missile hit and losing altitude. Inside the Coralian, a soaked Renton comes to a refrigerator and opens it to see a naked Anemone inside. She turns to him and calls him a pervert. Apologizing, Renton slams the door shut. He reopens the door, this time seeing only Anemone’s massive eye. Eureka continues following the butterfly, this time to the bathroom stall Anemone pushed Renton through. Outside, Holland prepares to attack the Izumo when they both pass around the Coralian again. Renton next ends up at the hill he used to lift at in Bellforest. A skyfish talks to him about hatred, until Anemone grabs his arm and tells him to call her name. On the Izumo, Dominick apologizes to Jurgens for his past actions, but begs him to help him protect Anemone this one time. Jurgens again refuses, saying they can’t be careless about the Gekko. Renton tells Anemone that he doesn’t know who she is, but she tells him that he was calling for her. She then tells him that he can die. On the Gekko, Ken-Goh lines up his second pass and fires again.  In the Zone tunnel, Renton is about to be consumed by a shark-like Anemone until Eureka grabs his arm and pulls him to safety. The shot from Ken-Goh grazes the Izumo’s wing, sending it careening towards the surface. Renton finds himself wading in a golden pool, and momentarily sees his sister.  Eureka appears beside him, and asks him to go back together. They hold hands. The Coralian disappears, leaving a seven-swell crater in the ground below. Renton wakes up in the Nirvash, Eureka’s hand over his, while Anemone lies unconscious in the nearby theEND.

Commentary

An risky choice was made is breaking up this episode into two parts, one exploring the physical battle between the two ships outside the Coralian and the psychological battle between Renton, Eureka and Anemone inside the Coralian- oftentimes, one part of a split story will come off as better than the other, or one part will be sacrificed so that the other can tell the superior story.  And while it is true that both battles are significantly different, they both come across equally well. The duel between Holland and Jurgens seems to draw inspiration from the great naval battle films, like Das Boot or even Star Trek’s “Balance of Terror,” although Dominick grates a bit with his devotion to his mission with Anemone. Inside the Coralian, all sorts of bizarre things happen, again harkening back to some of the stranger visuals of Evangelion. It is nice to see Eureka take some charge here, and actively try to save Renton, as opposed to the other way around. Their relationship seems to be the outlier among mecha anime relationships- it’s complex, interesting and, above all else, feels real and tangible.
