Episode 5: Vivid Bit

Summary

Mischa is running another operations test with Renton and Eureka in the Nirvash. Renton is in the middle of inputting data when Eureka executes a complex series of aerobatic maneuvers that catch him completely off guard and render him motion-sick. Mischa is impressed with the typeZERO's performance and wonders whether the Amita Drive is speaking to it. Renton finally loses control and vomits in the cockpit. As he cleans up the mess in the hangar, Renton frets over all the mistakes he has made as well as his embarrassing accident in the Nirvash. The children and Eureka walk up to him, and Maeter calls Renton a slacker. She then asks Eureka whether she likes boys who puke or boys who don't. The kids plug their noses because of the smell, as does Eureka. Renton explains that he's just not used to the way Eureka handles the Nirvash, but Maeter says he's just incompatible with Eureka. Renton insists that it's a matter of syncing up with someone else's movements, and Maurice says that still means he's incompatible. The children leave with Eureka, wanting to get away from the stink. As Renton continues to mope about his "bitter first love," Talho starts mocking him from the hallway. Renton walks after her and says he'll do anything as long as she won't tell anyone about his feelings for Eureka. Holland, Hap, and Hilda are budgeting out the Gekko's supplies when Talho shows up and demands that they buy her an expensive, limited-edition silver ring using the money from their last mission. Holland says they need parts for the Nirvash instead. He tells Talho and Hilda to launch in the 606 while he goes out in the Nirvash with Eureka. Talho asks him why Eureka has to go along, and Hilda says it's because they need her advice about the Nirvash's needs. Talho walks out and tells Renton to come along for their shopping trip. Hilda leaves with them. Hap asks Holland whether they intervene, and Holland says Renton will eventually figure out that they're just teasing him. Hap says he was talking about Talho. Hilda prepares the 606 for takeoff with Renton and Talho crammed together in the back seat. Renton asks if he should pilot so Hilda can sit with Talho, but Hilda says Matthieu will cry if Renton vomits in there. Meanwhile, Ken-Goh has Matthieu write up a battle report for Bell Forest, but Matthieu can't remember what happened there. Hilda parks the 606 next to a restaurant and leaves to buy toiletries while Talho drags Renton off to carry the items she's buying. Holland and Eureka shop for parts for the Nirvash. The shopkeeper tries to sell the two of them an inertial pump, but Eureka is able to sense that it no longer works. The shopkeeper throws the pump into a box of parts marked "useless" and asks Eureka if she could hear it speaking to her. Eureka just turns away with a sad look. Talho takes Renton to a lingerie store and teases him by asking him to pick out a bra for her. She then walks into a dressing room. Renton tells his sister that his heart was racing at that moment-not just because of the situation, but because Talho's facial expression reminded him of her.

Holland tells Eureka that he can go shopping for parts alone if it would make her feel better, but she says she wants to come along so she can take proper care of the Nirvash. She says Renton can understand machines' feelings too, and Holland says he isn't surprised. He remembers something else he had to buy and runs off. A fight breaks out in the store where Hilda is shopping. As Talho and Renton continue shopping, Talho sees a jewelry store with the ring she had wanted, but when she goes inside, she finds that the item is out of stock. Talho walks out in disappointment. She angrily turns to Renton and says they're going to buy something heavy. The two of them return to the restaurant where the 606 was parked. As Talho gets drunk on beer, Renton asks if she enjoys harassing him. Talho says she's just teasing him because it's amusing. She says Holland and the others won't do anything for her, but Renton will. She leans in and grasps his face as if to kiss him. Renton says he's in love with Eureka but figures there's a first time for everything. He puckers up in anticipation, but Talho yanks his cheeks again and bursts out laughing. She says a kid who doesn't have all his hair yet has no business talking about love. She asks why Renton had to come aboard the Gekko and then passes out. Three LFOs, custom-fitted with subwoofers, drive up to the restaurant. Talho walks out to complain about the noise, and the LFO pilots identify her as having been in ray=out. One of them takes a picture of her. An angry Talho walks over and smashes the pilot's camera. The blond pilot who had the camera grabs her arm. Renton runs over to help, but one of the pilots smacks him with a golf club. The blond pilot says that Talho will have to pay for the camera with her body. The other two pilots jump in their LFOs and try to run Renton over. He runs to the 606, starts it up, and shifts it into its humanoid mode. He tries to speed toward the thugs' LFOs but crashes into the restaurant instead just as Hilda returns. Holland hears about the struggle, and Eureka quickly drives the Nirvash to the scene. Renton tries to attack the LFOs, but they kick the 606 to the ground. The blond thug accosts Talho, but Holland stops him. When one of the LFOs starts punching the 606, the Nirvash grabs the LFO and rips off its cockpit canopy. Holland asks Talho if she went looking for trouble, and she kicks the thug in the crotch. As Talho walks away, the other attacking LFO tries to step on her, and Holland pushes her out of the way. However, his bag is crushed in the process. Infuriated, Holland jumps onto the LFO's arm and runs up the side to its cockpit. He then opens the cockpit and attacks the pilot inside. Later, Renton wakes up in Talho's lap in the back of the 606. Talho says she's never met anyone so reckless, but she thanks him for stepping in. Hilda says that everything is fine and they're heading back to the Gekko. Talho then switches the canopy to clear mode so they can see the sunset. Hilda points out that Renton didn't even vomit earlier. Renton says he doesn't get motion-sick when he lifts on his own, prompting Hilda to fly around wildly. Holland looks at his present for Talho: the ring she asked for earlier. Matthieu hands Renton his battle report and says that Renton can go after Eureka in earnest now. Renton asks Hilda how Matthieu knows about his interest in Eureka, and she says that everyone knows. Renton asks Talho why she told everyone, but she says she didn't tell anyone, turning to show Renton the ring strung around her neck. Mischa tells Renton that he should get a girl a gift to get on her good side, just as Holland did. Renton worries that he can't get anywhere with Eureka because he has nothing to give her. Mischa says he should show her how he feels through his actions. Eureka tells the kids how Renton helped them, but they can't believe it. Renton hopes that someday he can ask Holland what his first taste of love was like.

Commentary

There's not a lot going on here, plot-wise. Renton's hazing begins as Talho drags him around on her shopping errands and teases him repeatedly. Then a gang of hoodlums shows up for pretty much no reason other than to give Renton and Holland something to do. Speaking of Holland, he and Eureka seem to have some kind of closeness, and it looks like Talho's pretty jealous of that. He does at least care for Talho enough to get her the ring she was asking for, though. This episode starts a running gag with Renton throwing up in the cockpit, which of course is promptly latched onto by Eureka's kids. I have to say that these are some of the most unlikable brats I've ever seen in a series. Not only do they dump on Renton incessantly, but Eureka never does or says anything to stop them! It stretches the believability of her friendship with Renton, and it's frankly just not very funny.
