 Originally airing in July 2004, Fafner is a sci-fi mecha anime. The story follows Kazuki Makabe, pilot of the giant robot Fafner. Using the Fafner, he must protect his home, the secluded Tatsumiya Island, from alien invaders called Festum. Many challenges arise and only Kazuki and his friends can make their island a paradise once again. Produced by Studio XEBEC (Love Hina, Martian Successor Nadesico, Stellvia) and directed by Nobuyoshi Habara (DN Angel), with character designs by Hisashi Hirai (Gundam SEED/SEED DESTINY, Infinite Ryvius, s-CRY-ed) and mechanical designs by Naohiro Washio (Stellvia). Running 26 episodes, Fafner is available on DVD in the U.S. by Geneon Entertainment. In late 2005, the prequel special Right of Left aired on Japanese TV, but so far, it hasn't been licensed for release in the U.S. A new Fafner project entitled Heaven and Earth is set for release in 2010.
