Summary

Kyoko informs Sousuke that the PE tool shed is locked and there are strange whispers heard from within it. Sousuke listens and deduces that there are people inside doing drugs. He shoots down the door and throws a flashbang grenade inside. They find Shinji and his fellow members from the photography club inside developing film, which the grenade has now completely ruined. Shinji reveals that they were using the tool shed because they have no club room. All over the school, different clubs are using unassigned rooms without permission due to room shortage. At the student council room, Atsunobu reveals that they have an open room available because the sociology club agreed to hand it over, under the condition that the other clubs have to compete for it in a flirting contest by heading into town and picking up as many members of the opposite gender as possible. On the day of the contest, the sociology club chief Nanba Shiro lays out the rules and starts registering people. Chidori is surprised to see Sousuke signing up, and he reveals it’s a favor to Shinji to make up for ruining his photos. Tsubaki and the music club mock Sousuke for wearing combat gear, and the head of the music club challenges him to a bet: If Sousuke can pick up at least one girl, he’ll pay for Sousuke’s lunch for two weeks, otherwise Sousuke will swim in the lake naked. Sousuke naturally accepts. Chidori asks if he knows what he’s doing, and Sousuke confidently tells her that he’ll make girls fall for him instantly.

As the contest begins, Shiro explains to Chidori that he did this as research to find out what kind of person women are attracted to. Chidori, Kyoko and Ren watch the chaos that ensues. The model building club fails miserably. The music club manage to get some girls with their good looks, and the karate club pretend to harass girls while Tsubaki comes in and beats them up, earning the girls’ gratitude. They notice Shinji paying a very ugly woman and taking her to a side alley, where Sousuke drops a metal cage on her. Shinji asks Sousuke if they’re going overboard with this, and Chidori walks in on them. Chidori pummels Sousuke and has Shinji free the captive women. After fleeing from the women’s wrath, Chidori scolds Sousuke some more and then tries to explain the concept of flirting, which is way over Sousuke’s head. Chidori says she isn’t helping him and that what he did could have affected the entire school. Sousuke apologizes and agrees to try to approach girls normally, which fails miserably. At first Chidori feels no sympathy for him, but when she sees him help an old lady, she calls in sick to Shiro. At the end of the day, the karate club wins the contest. The music club asks Sousuke how he did and demands that he upholds his end of the bet. As Sousuke starts to take off his clothes, Chidori shows up unrecognizable in a kimono and pretends to be a married woman that Sousuke tried to pick up. She drags him away from the crowd and the music club admits their loss. Once far enough, Sousuke asks Chidori who she is and the latter switches back to her normal tone, laughing at how Sousuke couldn’t recognize her. Sousuke says that she surprises him all the time and Chidori says she needs to hear one other thing from him. Fumbling through words, Sousuke finally tells her that she’s beautiful.

Commentary

This episode, like several others based on Sousuke interpreting words like a cave man, isn’t really that funny before Sousuke tries to ask girls out normally. Sousuke might have had better luck if he acted like when he pretended to be Mizuki’s boyfriend back in the first season, but apparently he’s quick to forget that experience. Ironically, shy-around-girls Tsubaki manages to win the contest through cleverly exploiting the gratitude of rescued damsels, so props to that. On the plus side, there’s some nice relationship development as we see the lengths Chidori went through to save Sousuke from humiliation and the latter finally getting around to complementing her on her looks.
