Episode 5: Beautiful Sicily

Summary

Chidori smacks Sousuke over the head for dismantling the teacher’s new car. Sousuke explains that he thought the car had a bomb strapped to it and gets smacked again. Before he gets around to putting the car back together, Sousuke receives new orders and sets out, telling Chidori to stay indoors before he leaves. An e-conference between the heads of Mithril departments takes place on Merida island. The intelligence division tries to make excuses for not performing a background check on Vincent, and division head General Amitt blames the organizational structure. Mercenaries who work for money will naturally offer their services to the highest bidder. Amitt reminds everyone of the sea jacking incident by Gaulon and blames Tessa for not noticing any suspicious behavior. Admiral Borda retorts that it’s the intelligence division’s job to perform background checks, an Amitt repeats that he’s not responsible for checking everyone because they have other things to do. Amitt brings up the still going surveillance of Chidori and asks if it is still necessary for the tactical division to partake in it. General Council chairman Lord Mallory says that the structural problem is to be expected because they’re not tied down by preset notions. However, everyone should have understood that risk when they joined Mithril. With that, Mallory ends the meeting. Borda laments the situation and reminds Tessa that she can still transfer to the research department. Tessa sternly refuses and Borda says she’s just as stubborn as her father. He wishes that Leonard was with them and wonders what he’s doing. Switching to the matter of Vincent’s betrayal, Tessa says that they’re working on it. In Sicily, Vincent is hiding out with a mob boss who owes him for a favor. He spots a long-haired woman and takes her up to his room. While trying to make out with her, the woman, who turns out to be Mao, knocks him onto the bed and puts a gun to his mouth. She tells him that she would rather pull the trigger as revenge for getting her comrades killed before drugging him. Weber reveals himself and reminds Mao that they need to capture Vincent alive. They make their way out of the mansion and through a hedge maze. Mao accidentally stumbles upon a couple about to make love, and the startled woman’s scream alerts the guards. Trapped under heavy fire, Mao considers finishing Vincent off before Sousuke contacts them and blows a hole in a nearby wall. They find Sousuke ready with a car and a message informing them that the escape route has changed. The guards chase after them, and they prepare to retaliate with the weapons cache Sousuke brought with him.

The chase continues through the town streets. Mao and Weber manage to take out several cars. As they drive out into the country road, a soldier observing the chase informs Gates of the situation. Gates orders the SRT to be silenced, and the soldier signals a Savage to activate. Meanwhile, Chidori is annoyed by a classmate chatting with her boyfriend on the phone and Kyoko suggests that she try calling Sousuke. Chidori says that it’s impossible but Kyoko manages to get a hold of him. Sousuke has a hard time talking with Chidori and driving at the same time while Mao and Weber continue to take out the pursuing cars. At the end of the awkward conversation, Chidori tells him to get back as soon as possible and hangs up. With the last of the cars destroyed, the SRT notices that they’re now being chased by arm slaves. The Savages jump onto the road and Mao and Weber are surprised that the mafia would have such weapons. A Savage rips off the roof of the car and the engine succumbs to overheating. Just as they’re about to be fired upon, an M9 Falke decloaks and destroys all the Savages. It stops to glance at the SRT before re-activating its ECS and taking off just as a Mithril helicopter approaches. Upon hearing the news, Gates angrily tries to drown his assistant in the swimming pool. On the helicopter, Mao contacts Kalinin and demands to know who the pilot of the Falke was but gets denied. Weber sees Sousuke trying to study for his exams and asks why he didn’t stay in Japan. Sousuke replies that his job is important and they might have not gotten out without his help. Mao expresses her concern for Sousuke having trouble balancing his life and asks what he plans to do in the future. Sousuke replies that he’ll keep following orders and Mao angrily retorts that he’s hiding behind orders because it’s easier than thinking for himself. As the sun rises, Sousuke starts wondering about the future.

Commentary

For such an idealistic organization, the harshness of reality hits even Mithril. They’ve been betrayed twice and the intelligence division is a bunch of incompetent douches who don’t get along with the tactical division. On the other hand, poor Vincent didn’t get to enjoy his freedom for very long. Despite being under the protection of an Italian mob boss, he gets snatched pretty quick by Mithril. Though that operation might not have ended on a good note if it weren’t for the new M9 variant and its mysterious pilot. Sousuke descends into more uncertainty when faced with the question of what he plans to do for the rest of his life, and the problems will just keep piling on. Speaking of which, Chidori once again has a minor role in this episode, and I really don’t like it when the script calls for her IQ to drop a few points for the sake of comedy.
