Episode 22: For the Future

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

In the GN particle space, Setsuna declares that he's undergoing innovation, and Graham wonders if that's what he considers the peak. He recalls having a meeting at Homer's Japanese-style house where he asked the for the opportunity to fight Celestial Being. Homer asked if he wanted to fight for revenge, but Graham answered that he wanted to reach the peak only a warrior can. Training under a waterfall, Graham recalled Setsuna telling him he was distorted, but he noted that Setsuna couldn't do anything other than fight. Graham and Setsuna then return to their senses and continue their fight. Graham knocks away Setsuna's swords and attacks, but Setsuna blocks the swords with his hands and breaks them. He then pulls out a beam saber and stabs both of the Susanowo's arms, and the resulting damage destroys its visor, revealing a Flag head underneath. Graham climbs out of the cockpit and asks Setsuna why he won't finish him off, and Setsuna answers that he's going to fight to live on for tomorrow. As the 00 Raiser flies off, Regene comments that Setsuna's awakening as an Innovator will change humanity. On the Ptolemaios 2, Tieria is surprised to hear that Setsuna has secured the location of Veda. Feldt decrypts the message and determines that it's on the dark side of the Moon at Lagrange 2. Nothing shows up on a picture of the area, and when Mileina overlaps a star map, they notice that the position of the stars is off. Feldt calculates a 15 kilometer discrepancy, and she also gets a message from Celestial Being's lab ship. Homer remotely addresses the A-LAWS fleet and tells them that they'll be fighting to finish off Celestial Being. Goodman is confident that they can do the job with 21 ships and over 100 mobile suits, and he doesn't care that the license holders have left. Inside the Regnant's cockpit, Louise shakes and thinks about getting revenge on Nena. Linda tells Ian that they've brought new weapons and supplies, and they even fitted the 0 Gundam with a GN particle storage tank so that it could fight for a short time. During a strategy meeting, Setsuna declares that they have to break past the A-LAWS fleet and seize Veda, and Saji says that he won't hesitate. Soma also wants to fight, and Lockon says everyone has a reason to fight. Setsuna says they're fighting for the future, Tieria wants to free humanity from the Innovators, Allelujah wants to stop the creation of super soldiers and Lockon wants to overthrow the Federation. As they get ready, Allelujah points out that they don't have a pilot for the ship, but Lasse comes to the bridge to take his position. On a Katharon ship, Marina and the children look out into space. Shirin tells Klaus that Celestial Being is headed for Lagrange 2. In a room filled with clones of Divine and Bring, Ribbons wonders who will win: him or Setsuna. Graham pulls out a short blade to commit honorable suicide, but he stops when he thinks about what Setsuna told him.

In a corridor Feldt gives Setsuna a flower that Linda grew in a lab. She says she might anger Marina by doing that, but Setsuna says they don't have that kind of relationship. Tieria launches in the upgraded Seravee Gundam GNHW/B. As they prepare to launch in he Archer Arios, Soma tells Allelujah that he can call her Marie. The Cherudim Gundam GNHW/R launches next, followed by Setsuna and Saji. Goodman orders the fleet to open fire, and the Aheads begin their attack. Tieria, Allelujah and Soma destroy several Aheads, while Lockon snipes Aheads and GN-XIIIs. Setsuna destroys an Ahead with his new GN sword III and notices three ships heading toward the Ptolemaios 2. He uses the Trans-Am Raiser sword to destroy them, and they begin to emanate a particle beam disrupting cloud. Goodman orders the mobile suits to rush in and overwhelm with numbers. Soma begins to run out of missiles, and Lockon uses his shield bits to protect Tieria from a GN-XIII lance. Several Aheads fire a large missile that pierces the Ptolemaios 2's GN field. The ship is hit with more missiles, and a pair of Aheads close in to fire a missile at the bridge. However, they're both destroyed by incoming fire from the Katharon ships. Katharon mobile suits join the fight, and Sumeragi orders the ship to head straight for the enemy fleet. One of the Baikals is destroyed, and Kati sends a message saying that A-LAWS has become a puppet of the corrupt Federation and must face judgment. Kati orders the mobile suits to launch from her coup faction ship, and Patrick destroys an Ahead with his GN-XIII. Goodman wants to fire at Kati's ship, but an officer points out that she's hiding behind the shadow of one of their disabled ships. He still wants to fire anyway, but just then Setsuna emerges from the cloud and destroys Goodman's ship with the Trans-Am Raiser sword. Shirin tells Marina that Klaus and the others are part of the battle. Ribbons watches the battle and comments that humans like to fight, and Regene tells him he's the one who led humanity to that point. Ribbons says that should be Regene's desire too, and he comments that he's superior to the Innovators. He says that with quantum brain waves he can sense Regene's treacherous thoughts, so Regene pulls out a gun and shoots Ribbons in the head. With Ribbons dead, Regene declares that he'll be the one to guide humanity.

Commentary

Now that Celestial Being knows where Veda is, the final battle has begun. Before that, we see some more explanation about Graham and learn that his inspiration for Mr. Bushido came from a samurai mask in Homer's house. We also learn that the Susanowo was really just a Flag all along, so it's not surprising that it was easily defeated by the 00 Raiser. Ribbons is setting things into motion, and for whatever reason, that plan involved dozens of clones of Bring and Divine. The Gundams all get some last minute weapon upgrades, and the old 0 Gundam comes back to fight once more, this time sporting a classic RX-78-2 color scheme. After being absent for several episodes following the Break Pillar event, Kati and Patrick return, this time fighting with the coup faction. Patrick has some better luck this time, maybe because he's not fighting the Gundams. It's good to see the old grunt suits from season 1 get their brief moment in the sun as they destroy Aheads and GN-XIIIs. It was also nice to finally see Goodman get killed, as I've been waiting for that practically since the first moment he opened his mouth. Finally, Regene is forced to make his move and shoot Ribbons, but I think his victory will be short-lived. Given that Ribbons can make tons of clones, the person Regene shot in the head is probably not the real Ribbons.
