Episode 46: Space Fortress La Gramis

Summary

The EFF fleet led by the Diva approaches La Gramis, and Algreus informs Flit that Second Moon has joined with La Gramis. Flit tells the bridge crew that this just makes it easier for them to wipe out all the Vagans at once. On the Amadeus, Algreus addresses the fleet and states that for generations they've all lived under the shadow of the Vagan threat. He notes that they've made it as far as they have because they haven't given up, so now they have to win a victory by destroying La Gramis and taking back Earth. Flit tells Kio that the AGE-FX has a new mode, so he'd better get briefed on it before launching. The Baronoke rejoins with the fleet and takes position. Seric encounters Natora in a corridor and speaks with her about the upcoming battle. He then notes that she's tense and that her hat is pointed down too much and her tie too tight as a sign of self-discipline. Natora comments that Seric always sees right through her, and she laments that she hasn't changed at all since everything started. Seric says that everyone has their own anxieties and that no one can be perfectly prepared for every situation. He tells Natora that she should just be her own kind of captain and salutes her. Wendy greets Kio in a corridor and accidentally drops several boxes of medical supplies. He helps her carry them to a supply room, and she says she doesn't like things either. She says she has to get medical supplies ready because lots of people will be hurt, but she wishes she didn't have to use them. She says she can't stop Kio because he's not going to the battlefield to fight, and he declares that he'll end the fighting in his own way. Kio then meets with Rody and Wootbit to hear about the AGE-FX's new FX Burst mode, which maximizes mobility and will allow him to take down many enemies at once single-handedly. Wootbit chases after the distracted Kio, but Seric appears and says he'll go instead. Seric approaches Kio and asks him to stop trying to save enemies because it puts him in danger. He reminds Kio that his job is to protect himself and his allies, not the enemy. He has to defeat his enemies to do that, and Seric notes that the Vagans aren't playing around. On the Fa Zard, Zeheart projects a hologram of himself into Second Moon and announces that the time has come for the final battle. He vows that Eden will be in their hands if they follow the path that Ezelcant created for them. Ezelcant calls Zanald and asks him to help Zeheart by becoming his right-hand man. Ezelcant stands over Gera and comments that Gera was meant to take his place, and while he has Ezelcant's DNA, Zeheart is the heir to his soul. Algreus announces the beginning of the assault to the EFF fleet.

Wootbit calls Kio in the AGE-FX's cockpit and asks if he doesn't want to use the FX burst mode. Wootbit asks Kio if he wants to die and says that the Vagans will kill him if he doesn't kill them first. Kio recalls Asemu telling him not to give up and reaffirms that he'll end the war in his own way. Obright launches in his Genoace O-Custom, followed by Derek and Jonathan in their Clanches, Seric in the Clanche Custom and Kio's AGE-FX. The Baronoke deploys its mobile suits, including Asemu's AGE-2 Dark Hound. Zeheart asks Fram if she's ever pictured herself in the Eden they're trying to create. She vows to help him create Eden even at the cost of her own life, but Zeheart says he doesn't want to lose a valuable subordinate. Fram cries as she leaves and tells herself that being just his subordinate is good enough. As the battle begins a Danazine destroys a Clanche and Adele Cannon, but is in turn destroyed by Obright. Kio uses his C-Funnels to slice apart a Danazine and spare the pilot. Asemu grapples onto a Reganner with his wire hooks, and two G-Exes Jackedges slice it apart to finish the job. Algreus notes that the biggest threat to them is the cannon that La Gramis used to destroy Big Ring, but with several Vagan ships in the line of fire he doesn't think they'll attack. Zeheart concludes that the EFF probably believes they won't fire the Digmazenon cannon, which is just what he plans. Flit thinks that something isn't right and wonders what that bad feeling is. A Danazine attacks Derek and is hit from a stray shot from a Vagan battleship. Derek destroys the Danazine and wonders why the battleship is just firing forward and not targeting him directly. He moves in closer to investigate, and Seric tells him not to go off on his own. Natora is informed that Derek flew off to investigate odd activity from a Vagan ship. Flit realizes that the Vagan fleet in the center is a decoy and asks Natora to have all units withdraw. Ocramud fires the Digmazenon cannon as the EFF forces withdraw, but the blast destroys four ships and kills Derek. Algreus orders the fleet to push forward after the Diva while the cannon recharges. Kio cries and can't believe that the Vagans would do something like that. Leil uses the Ghirarga Custom to attack Seric, and Obright destroys a Reganner. A Dorado opens fire on him, but Kio uses his C-Funnels to protect Obright. Zeheart appears in the Gundam Legilis and deploys his bits against Kio. Kio creates a barrier around himself with the C-Funnels, so Zeheart deploys more bits. Fram joins the attack in the Fawn Farsia and backs up Zeheart. Kio comes under heavy fire from both of them, and Wootbit tells him to use the FX Burst mode. Kio refuses and says he doesn't want to fight to take lives, so Wootbit asks him again if he wants to die. Fram grabs onto Kio with her beam whip, which gives Zeheart a clear shot on Kio. Zeheart then comes under attack from several Danazines and wonders if they misfired. They haven't, and Zanald orders his troops to kill Zeheart and Fram. Zeheart retreats at Fram's suggestion and calls for the second wave. Godom is told that his suit isn't ready yet, so he launches instead in the new Gurdolin. Dean launches in the Jilsbain and wonders if Kio is also on the battlefield.

Commentary

The final battle begins with the assault on La Gramis, as does the first of presumably several death. Derek was a pretty competent pilot and managed to survive up to now, but he ends up getting killed by the sudden firing of the Digmazenon cannon. Kio is confronted several times about his reckless fighting style, which only puts himself in danger. His desire to not kill the enemy has evolved to a new level of stupidity, because he's willing to extend a courtesy to his enemies that they won't return, even at the cost of his own life. Even though Zeheart and Fram are trying to kill him and have him outgunned, he refuses to fight properly and defend himself. There's nothing wrong with wanting have peace, but that ideology has to have its limits when you're on a battlefield surrounded by enemies who want to kill you. I also have to wonder why Kio is shocked by the firing of the Digmazenon. Hasn't he seen everything the Vagans have done up to now, starting with the indiscriminate killing of civilians at Olivernotes? As expected, Zanald follows through and becomes a traitor villain, which was no surprise. He was never going to play second fiddle to Zeheart, but I wonder how many backers he has outside his own men. We learn that Gera was intended to be Ezelcant's successor, but he still hasn't even woken up yet. I'm not sure why we need yet another new character so late in the series, and I wonder what the point will be of having him show up in only the last three episodes. Dean has also joined the battle, so it's inevitable that he will have a confrontation with Kio. Despite earlier disappointments in this arc, the final battle seems to be off to a good start, but it remains to be seen if the series can deliver a satisfying conclusion.
