Episode 15: Reborn Try Fighters

Summary

Yuuki and Lady visit the monument where the PPSE Stadium once stood before it was wrecked seven years ago by an out of control Plavsky crystal. The tournament has moved to the nearby Yajima Stadium, built after the old one was torn down. Ral and the team arrive at the Yajima Stadium, which is the venue for the national tournament. Fumina thanks Yuuma for keeping their childhood promise, and Sekai tells her not to talk like things are already over. At the hotel, Sekai is surprised to see so many people, and Yuuma explains that there are 49 teams representing every prefecture. Sekai spots the White Wolf team, and Kei tells them not to forget about him, but they don't know who he is. The lobby goes silent when Allan, Wilfrid and Saga arrive. Sekai loudly declares that Wilfrid can't lose until they fight, which attracts the attention of the crowd. Yuuma spots Sakai sneaking around and gives chase. Sakai hides in an elevator and declares that he wants to make a cool and dramatic appearance when he sees Yuuma again. However, Yuuma walks into the elevator because Sakai didn't press any buttons. Yuuma asks Sakai if he's entering the nationals, and Sakai vows to take him down, but the elevator doors close in the middle of his rant. Yuuma tells the team about Sakai, who is moping nearby. Fumina jokingly asks Sakai to not be too hard on them, so he starts fawning over her. She asks about his machine, which he reveals is based on the ZZ Gundam. He boasts that it's 10 billion times stronger than the Lightning Gundam, and Sekai almost reveals information about its upgrade. The Shiki triplets observe from nearby and aren't worried just because Yuuma and Sakai are top builders. Allan meets with the team and is informed that Junya Inose is on the roster representing Miyagi Prefecture. Shia doesn't know who he is, and Wilfrid explains that Junya was the only guy they couldn't beat over the last few years. He didn't participate last year, so his return now is a surprise. In their hotel room, Sekai asks Yuuma why he's still building, and Yuuma explains that they're spare parts since tournament combat is set to damage level A. However, Sekai falls asleep during the explanation, and later on his snoring keeps Yuuma up.

The next day, Kaoruko and Shimon hurry to the stadium and find that the Try Fighters are also late. Sekai and Yuuma argue and blame each other for being late. When they reach the stadium, they're shocked to see that Mirai is now the tournament's image character. The entire stadium is captivated by Mirai's beauty, and she presses the button that selects the bracket. Fumina is shocked to see that they're in the very first match against Okhotsk Academy's Amorphous team, so they run off to get their Gunpla. Sakai thinks that Yuuma will lose because Okhotsk placed in the best eight last year. Before the match begins, everyone reaffirms their intentions to win the battle. The Try Fighters launch into a space level with their upgraded Try Burning Gundam, Star Winning Gundam and Lightning Gundam Full Burnern. They soon make contact with Amorphous' Raider Lagoon, Salty Kyrios and Screw Gabthley. The Salty Kyrios fires missiles, and Sekai uses the Lightning Gundam as a jumping pad to rush in. The Try Burning emits fire and uses the phoenix attack to destroy the Screw Gabthley. Fumina then uses her funnels against the Raider Lagoon and slices it apart. The Salty Kyrios activates Trans-Am to attack Fumina and Sekai, but the Lightning Gundam is able to keep up with it at regular power. Yuuma destroys its rifle, and Fumina uses a beam star to pin it to an asteroid. Sekai rushes in with a Ryusei Rasen-Ken and destroys both the Salty Kyrios and the asteroid, thus ending the match. Junya watches from around a corner and looks disdainfully at Sekai. In the fourth match of the day, Sakai's Build Busters head into battle with their combining mecha.

Commentary

The national tournament finally starts in this episode, and it's no surprise that the Try Fighters are first to bat. However, it's an utterly disappointing battle against a worthless opponent. Team Amorphous offers absolutely no resistance, and their fighters completely break down in panic and don't know what to do in response to the Try Fighters. This isn't the first time this has happened, but it's pretty tiresome here. I get that the point is to show off the abilities of the upgraded Gundams, but it would've been better if there had been at least some challenge. The rest of the episode before the battle is pretty good, so it's a shame that it falls apart in the final minutes. Even though they've got upgraded Gunpla, I hope the Try Fighters face a real challenge soon that puts their skills to the test.
