Episode 23: Build Fighter

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

With the semifinals over, Mirai dramatically announces to the crowd that Celestial Sphere and the Try Fighters will face each other in the final round in two days. Shia wants to help Wilfrid with his Gunpla, but Saga thinks that Wilfrid wants to do it on his own so he can reach the open tournament. Ral and the Try Fighters survey their damaged Gunpla to repair. Sekai wishes he had fought better, but Yuuma asks for his support to repair them. In the dorm room, Ral produces a memory chip with the data on the Gunpla Academy that the Shikis emailed to him. They first examine the abilities of Wilfrid's Transient Gundam, and Yuuma concludes that Wilfrid held back when he first fought Sekai. Ral also shows them that the unit has a burst system like the Try Burning. Next, they look over Saga's Gundam The End and make note of a hidden gimmick in its belly. Ral then shows them the repair function of Shia's G-Portent, which concerns him greatly. Fumina says there's nothing in the battle system for repairs, but Yuuma notes that the repair bots are actually fixing the Gunpla and must be carrying glue. Fumina sees that the repair function would be a great advantage if Shia can hide long enough to use it. Ral states that Celestial Sphere has the perfect lineup with Wilfrid's all-purpose unit, Saga's high offensive ability and Shia's repair function. Allan sees Wilfrid's work and comments that most people never see the work he puts into Gunpla. Allan then says he chose Wilfrid as team leader not just because of his ability, but because of his love of Gunpla, much like the Meijin. Yuuma thinks to himself that simply repairing the Gunpla isn't enough to match the Gunpla Academy, but there's no time for tuning. He then gets an idea and starts to disassemble the Lightning Gundam. Kaoruko brings parts to help Fumina, and Yuuma grabs the Star Winning without explanation. He then returns to his room and locks the door after kicking Sekai out. Yuuma tells himself to stop hesitating and simply move forward.

Sekai decides to crash in Mirai's room, and Fumina asks him to bring food to Yuuma since he'll be pulling an all-nighter. Mirai wonders if it's ok for Yuuma to push himself so hard. Sekai heads out to buy food and is surprised to see Junya outside. Fumina is about to let herself into the room, but Sakai rushes in first and immediately understands what Yuuma is doing. He sits down and tells Yuuma that he'll never finish in time alone. Junya attacks Sekai and uses a move that makes two chopping hands appear as four. He knocks Sekai down and tells him to remember that move before walking away. Akira pulls up next to Junya and comments that he can be nice after all, but Junya explains he's just helping to even things up. Akira then offers Junya a ride and crashes his car. Yuuma asks Sakai why he's doing this instead of preparing for the Meijin Cup, and Sakai answers that he doesn't want to have extra time for Yuuma to use as an excuse. Shia pokes Sekai with a stick and wakes him up, and he comments that the technique Junya used wasn't Jigen Haoh. Shia mentions that Wilfrid wanted to fix his Gunpla alone, and Sekai comments that he wishes he had the ability to repair Gunpla himself. Shia offers to build him a good Gunpla, but he stops her and says that won't work. Sekai recalls that he didn't know anything about Gunpla Battle until three months ago, but he still doesn't truly understand Gunpla yet and can't become an equal to his teammates until he can do things on his own. Shia realizes that Wilfrid must feel the same, and Sekai feels relief at having talked things out. Sekai grabs his food bag and decides to head back and help the others. The next day, Kaoruko and her friends meet with Shimon and Mamoru, who is now out of the hospital. Mamoru asks which one is Shimon's girlfriend, which makes Shimon blush. Allan tells the team to enjoy their battle, and Shia vows that she'll defeat Fumina and become a true build fighter. Fumina runs into Lady Kawaguchi and asks if they can fight again should she win. She agrees, and Fumina vows to surpass her. In the stadium, Mirai introduces the teams on a broadcast watched around the world, including in Paris by China and Sei. The Try Fighters give themselves a pep talk before the battle begins in a space level with a colony. As both teams launch, Sekai tells himself that he still has so much to learn, but he'll fight with everything he has. A doctor rushes into the stadium and is bothered that Saga is fighting due to his injured wrist.

Commentary

The final battle of the tournament is upon us, but this episode stops to take a breather, much like the original Build Fighters before it. The Try Fighters see that they'll have a difficult battle ahead of them, thanks to the data provided by the Shikis. Sekai reflects on his journey through the series so far, from being a newbie to a dedicated fighter. However, also like Reiji before him, he recognizes that he doesn't quite understand Gunpla and Gundam the way others do because he came in as a non-fan. In essence, this episode is a series of character vignettes as both teams prepare themselves for the battle. Sekai and Shia get to have one final scene together before they'll face each other as opponents. That's preceded by some helpful advice from Junya that takes very direct and physical form. Now that their battle is over, it's good to see Yuuma and Sakai working together while still managing to be rivals. However, the post credit scene is pretty unnecessary and looks like cheap way for Saga to lose and thus lead to the inevitable Try Fighters victory. Overall, this was a solid episode that sets the stage for the tournament's conclusion.
