Evolve 13: RMS-108 Marasai

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

In UC 0087 the Titans prepare to intercept the AEUG as they attempt to drop mobile suits into the atmosphere over Jaburo base. A Marasai pilot named Jonathan is surprised that the AEUG are attempting to drop so many mobile suits. Jonathan attacks a Nemo and hits it. He watches as Kamille Bidan's Gundam Mk-II is chased by Jerid Messa and Kacricon Cacooler. Jonathan tries to shoot the Mk II from above, but his ballute automatically deploys. To kill time during re-entry, he pops in an SD card with a message from his father. His father tells him that though he might dislike the company, the company has gathered valuable information. He tells Jonathan that he's just being used as bait because the Titans plan to lure in the AEUG and destroy Jaburo with nuclear weapons. His damaged Marasai suffers a small explosion and begins to spin out of control. Jonathan then recalls a conversation with his father about the disappearance of his brother at sea. He then curses his father and tells him to go to hell. Jonathan snaps out of it as his Marasai enters the atmosphere and ditches its ballute. His father's message plays over and over on the panoramic monitor, but Jonathan ignores it and destroys a Nemo. He then loses an arm while attacking a descending Rick Dias, so he jumps onto it and begins punching it. The ballute explodes, and Jonathan's cockpit is ejected. Later, the Titans detonate the nuclear bomb, which destroys Jaburo. As the message continues to play, Jonathan sits outside of his cockpit, which crashed into a river.

Commentary

Directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani, this short explores another part of Zeta's story: the Jaburo drop operation. While you see cameos of Kamille and Char's mobile suits, the focus here is on a young Marasai pilot named Jonathan. Upset over the apparent death of his brother, he cut off his family ties and joined the Titans. He does pretty well in the orbital battle, and he crashes far enough away from Jaburo to avoid being killed in the nuclear explosion. Since the Jaburo drop operation was one of my favorite parts of Zeta, it was nice to see it redone here in CG.
