Episode 20: George, Beat the Nightmare!

Review by Chris Guanche

July 10, 2001

Summary

A space shuttle comes under attack from Godarl mobile suits as it escapes from Neo France's space colony and heads for the Guiana Highlands. In the Guiana Highlands, George practices with his butler Raymond, who taught him his sword skills. As they fight, George hallucinates and thinks that Raymond's Butler Bensonmum suit is the Devil Gundam. Rain is in the area, and she has dinner with George. Raymond tells her that George hasn't been able to fight as well, and George realizes that Raymond and Rain planned the meeting. Rain leaves, and George tells Raymond to leave him alone. George imagines seeing Maria kidnapped by the Devil Gundam, and he thinks he is infected with DG cells. Raymond goes to Domon's camp and shows them a video of George's last Gundam Fight, where he attacked the Gundam Magnat like a wild animal. Raymond tells them about an incident a year ago when Neo France was selecting its Gundam Fighter. George was fighting Jean-Pierre Mirabeau, who cheated by putting the Mirage Gundam's back to the audience and essentially holding them hostage against George. Because of that, George is selected as the Gundam Fighter by the King. Mirabeau goes out of control and tries to kill the King. George stops him, but Mirabeau's missiles end up flying into the crowd and kill many innocent people. From then on it was known as the Tragedy of Marseille, and George's encounter with the Devil Gundam has caused it to resurface. Raymond is hoping that Domon will fight George and help guide him out of the torment he is suffering. George appears and fires Raymond, with Schwarz watching nearby.

Raymond has a drink in a bar and sees on the news that Mirabeau escaped from prison and retrieved his Mirage Gundam. Raymond rushes to find George and warn him. Domon and Rain visit George, and Domon says that George has become a coward because of the Devil Gundam and doesn't deserve to be a Gundam Fighter. A shuttle appears in the sky, and the Mirage Gundam emerges from it. Mirabeau wants to kill George and become Neo France's Gundam Fighter. Domon calls the Shining Gundam and attacks Mirabeau. He is about to use the Shining Finger, but Schwarz holds him back because it's George's fight. The Mirage Gundam regenerates, and Mirabeau says he visited Master Asia and sold his soul to the Devil Gundam. Raymond arrives and takes the brunt of a missile attack, driving George into a rage. He calls on the Gundam Rose and viciously attacks Mirabeau. Domon stops him and goes into Super Mode to restrain him, reminding George that he is an heir of the Shuffle Alliance. Raymond tells him that the enemy he must defeat is not Mirabeau, but rather the devil that is in his heart. George relaxes and uses the power of his symbol to cleanse Mirabeau of the DG cells. Schwarz tells Domon that fighting without heart only leads to destruction. He says that great power is like a double-edged sword, and he asks Domon what edge he will use before leaving. George rehires Raymond and says no one is more fit to be the housekeeper for the de Sand family. Domon realizes that his Super Mode is difficult to understand, but he will keep training until he learns how to control it at will.

Commentary

As I expected, George visits the Guiana Highlands to train. Like the other guys, he also is unable to fight because of his encounter with the Devil Gundam. However, George has the added trauma of the Tragedy of Marseille and his battle with Mirabeau. This Mirabeau seems like quite the psycho, much like Neo Italy's Michelo Chariot. However, Mirabeau is a servant of the Devil Gundam. I still think this power of the Shuffle Alliance to heal DG cell infected people makes no sense and needs some further explanation. Why is it that the previous members of the Shuffle Alliance died to cleanse George and the others, but nothing happened to George when he cleansed Mirabeau?
