Episode 38: Domon VS. Argo! Charging Bolt Gundam

Review by Chris Guanche

August 7, 2001

Summary

Argo fights against Neo Canada's Andrew Graham and his Lumber Gundam. The rest of the Shuffle Alliance watches the Fight, and they wonder why Graham came just to fight Argo. Domon explains that Argo accidentally caused the death of Andrew's wife, and he has been trying to kill Argo for revenge ever since then. Andrew has the advantage in the battle until Nastasha tells Argo he can't save his space pirates if he loses. Argo manages to activate the Bolt Gundam's Hyper Mode and performs the new special move Zakaretsu Gaia Crusher, which splits the ground open and creates mountains. Andrew is pinned between them, and Argo smashes him with his Graviton Hammer and wins. Wong tells Master Asia that Domon is not strong enough to help them activate the Devil Gundam, and the person they need is Allenby. Master Asia isn't sure of her abilities, and Wong says she will prove herself in the next Fight. Wong prepares to meet with Neo Sweden's Professor Behluima. Everyone is shocked by Wong's announcement in the papers that the next battle is a tag match of Domon and Allenby against Argo and Andrew. Argo practices in his cell and is enveloped in a hologram that shows his space pirate friends. Domon speaks to Andrew and asks him not to try anything during the fight. Andrew says it's impossible and that he surely won't miss this chance to kill Argo. Domon leaves and asks Allenby to watch Andrew and make sure he doesn't do anything. Wong straps Behluima into his own Berserker System and asks what the frequency is to control Allenby's brain. When he refuses to answer, Wong tortures him.

Argo is taken to the waterfront to have a fancy dinner with Nastasha. She shows him that his space pirate buddies are on a nearby ship, and the dinner is an apology for the government's lack of faith. The next day, Schwarz and the others wonder if Andrew will attack Argo. Schwarz believes that Andrew will be detrimental to the match, but the only way to be certain is to watch. Master Asia arrives on the real Fuunsaiki to watch the battle, and he wonders what Wong is up to. The battle begins, and Argo immediately goes into Hyper Mode and uses the Zakaretsu Gaia Crusher to separate the ring in two with him and Domon on one side, and Allenby and Andrew on the other. This way he can fight Domon without having to worry about Andrew. As the fight continues, Wong deploys a satellite dish and activates the Berserker System, which immediately begins to control Allenby. Master Asia gallops over on Fuunsaiki and demands that Wong stop. He threatens to use his power on Wong, but he falls to the floor with a hacking cough. Andrew watches Argo and wonders what the reason is for him risking his life in the fight. Domon uses the Bakunetsu God Finger, but Argo counters with the Zakaretsu Gaia Crusher. Domon appears to be losing, but Argo will end up hurting himself as well if he continues. Domon sees that the Bolt Gundam's legs are starting to weaken, so the God Gundam uses the God Field Dash to cripple one of the Bolt Gundam's legs and win the match. Andrew is amazed that Argo risks his life for his comrades. The berserk Allenby appears and attacks Argo. Andrew jumps in front and takes the full force of her attack. Andrew tells Argo that only now does he trust him, and this is the only thing he can do for him. There is a massive explosion, and the Lumber Gundam limply falls to the ground. The berserk Nobell Gundam stands nearby, engulfed in flames.

Commentary

For a Gundam Fight episode, this was actually very good. For the most part, this episode seems to be setting up the final arc of the series, which will obviously be about the end of the Gundam Fight and the return of the Devil Gundam. Wong is close to activating it, and it seems that Allenby is the key to doing that. The tension between Wong and Master Asia reaches a boiling point, but a mysterious sickness prevents Master Asia from doing anything. Perhaps he's starting to fall apart and needs DG cells. Andrew was still bent on revenge, but he finally realized that Argo wasn't evil and values life. It's a shame that just after realizing that he has to sacrifice himself. I say sacrifice because there's no way he could survive that attack and massive explosion.
