Gundam
Gundam is the definitive Japanese mecha series. Many people consider it the "Star Trek of Japan" because of several striking similarities. The first series in each franchise suffered poor ratings in their initial runs, only to enjoy massive success in reruns. Both were resurrected as feature films, and both enjoyed continued success with many spinoff series. Gundam's first sequel was the 1985 TV series Zeta Gundam, and nearly every year since then has featured a Gundam anime project. In 1994, Sunrise expanded beyond the original setting of the Universal Century with the first alternate universe series, Mobile Fighter G Gundam. Every Gundam TV series from that point has been an alternate universe, with the occasional OVA returning to the UC era. Bandai Entertainment entered the U.S. market in 1998 with releases of the Gundam movies, Gundam 0080 and Gundam 0083, but these releases generated little attention until the successful 2000 broadcast of Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network. The most recent TV series is Gundam 00, which ran from 2007-2009 and is receiving a movie sequel. Sunrise is also currently releasing an OVA adaptation of Harutoshi Fukui's Gundam Unicorn novels that returned to the original UC setting. Sunrise has also announced the 2010 release of a 3-episode OVA series, Gunpla Builders Beginning G. In the U.S., Bandai has announced a license of the 1999 TV series Turn A Gundam, but no other information is available.
