Episode 27: A Spy on Board

Review by Chris Guanche

August 27, 2001

Summary

In a meeting aboard the White Base, Amuro discusses using the G-Armor to form the G-Sky, G-Sky Easy and G-Bull. Kai says he has to go to the bathroom and leaves. Amuro outlines their ideas and requests more parts. When the meeting ends, Revil wishes the crew good luck on their upcoming journey to Jaburo. Later, Amuro and Bright see Kai leaving the ship. Amuro says he doesn't like everything about Kai, but he can't believe that he's leaving. Kai says he's reached his limit and doesn't like military formality, and Bright says he's a coward. As Kai leaves, Amuro gives him his toolbox so that he can trade it for money to live on. Kai walks through the city and runs into Miharu. She asks if he has anywhere to stay and offers to let him stay with her and her younger siblings Gil and Milly. Kai accepts and has dinner with Miharu and the children. When he's left alone, he sees that she has a gun in her basket of trinkets, and he doesn't like that. When she comes back, he tells her that White Base is having engine trouble and will be leaving dock soon. She's confused, and he says he understands how hard it is for her to raise Gil and Milly. She reports the info to Boone, and Char orders Boone to have her infiltrate the ship. Char leaves in his Sealance to return to the Mad Angler, and Boone's Jukon deploys the new amphibious suit Z'Gok and the remaining Gogg. It fires missiles as a distraction, and the Federation Forces fire anti-submarine missiles. A soldier leaves the Mad Angler in a speedboat to meet with Miharu. At the dock, Sayla takes off in the G-Fighter and breaks through the dock wall. When the Gundam is ready to go into battle, Amuro takes off and jumps onto the G-Fighter.

Kai watches the battle unfold and decides to leave. He asks the kids where Miharu went, and they say she is shopping. Miharu meets with the Zeon soldier, and he tells her that her mission is to get on the White Base and discover its destination. He gives her gold as payment and a Federation Forces uniform. Though the assignment is difficult, she figures she has to feed Gil and Milly somehow. Miharu returns home and tells Gil and Milly she'll be gone for a while. She gives them the gold to buy food and says that after she's done, they'll move somewhere free of war. Milly comments that Miharu smells like mother, and she apologizes for reminding Milly of their mother. Kai keeps on watching the battle from outside Belfast and wonders why he can't stop worrying about the ship. Amuro and Sayla arrive at the ocean, and Amuro goes underwater to fight the Gogg while Sayla attacks the submarines. Hayato launches in the Guncannon and is immediately attacked by the Z'Gok. The Z'Gok has the clear advantage and destroys one of the Guncannon's cannons. Kai decides to return to the ship and borrows a motorcycle. He dodges explosions to get to the ship and use the Guntank. Amuro destroys the Gogg and returns to the dock to help Hayato fight the Z'Gok. Kai attacks the Z'Gok, and it tries to slam him into the ocean, but he's saved by Amuro. The Z'Gok jumps into the water, and Amuro dives in after it. Miharu runs through the town and sneaks onto the White Base unnoticed. The Z'Gok jumps out of the water, and Kai shoots it. Amuro then slices it in half, and the battle ends. Char is informed of the loss of suits and that Miharu boarded the ship. He orders Boone to keep in contact with Miharu and fulfill the mission. Later, the White Base takes off and heads for the Federation headquarters in Jaburo, South America.

Commentary

This second episode set in Ireland is also featured in movie 2, minus all the G-Fighter stuff. This is a great episode, as it provides development for Kai and shows that he's more than a coward or a smart ass as everyone perceives him to be. He does have a gentler side to him, and he shows it for the first time here. We also get to see more of Miharu, who is very sympathetic for a Zeon character. She is a spy not for power or fame, but only to take care of her brother and sister. You see those poor kids and generally feel for them and their troubles. You'll really feel for them after what happens in the next episode.
