Episode 30: A Wish of War Orphans

Review by Chris Guanche

August 30, 2001

Summary

Gaw carriers continue to carpet bomb the jungles over Jaburo. Char gets into his Z'Gok and is followed into the water by a squad of new Acguy mobile suits. Elsewhere, an officer presents the crew with their official military ranks and promotions. A female officer offers to take the children from Fraw to Jaburo's orphanage. It's announced that Ryu will be given a posthumous two-rank promotion, and Amuro is angry about that. He complains that the Federation does nothing to help when soldiers are alive and just hands out promotions when they're dead. The officer tries to slap Amuro and gets angry when Amuro dodges him. Later, Fraw tells Amuro that sometimes he has to be straightened out when he says things that he shouldn't. Char and his men leave their suits once they enter Jaburo from an underwater passage. Kikka, Katz and Letz are taken to the orphanage, and they don't get along with the other kids. They run away to the caverns and walk on top of an Acguy without noticing it. The Acguy pilot, Akahana, is surprised that they didn't notice him. Char and his men find the GM factory and plant bombs all over the GMs. Kikka, Katz and Letz decide to rest and go inside the GM factory. They see the Zeon soldiers and are captured and tied up. Kikka takes the scarf off of Letz's mouth, and he starts biting through Katz's ropes to break free.

Bright, Amuro, Hayato and Kai prepare to visit the GM factory, but Bright is called away to a meeting. Letz breaks through Katz's ropes, and Katz unties Letz and Kikka. They then begin to take all the bombs off of the GMs and load them onto a jeep. Letz drives the jeep out into the caverns, and they're quickly spotted by Amuro, Kai and Hayato. Amuro jumps over to their jeep and takes it over while the kids jump to the other jeep with Kai's help. Amuro jumps off of the jeep, and it goes over a cliff and explodes. As they're driving back, Amuro spots Char and his soldiers. The Acguys attack, and Amuro runs off to get the Gundam. While Sayla searches for the kids in a cavern, she runs into Char. She says that her brother Casval would never be part of Zeon, and Char asks her to quit the Federation Forces. Mirai shoots at Char, and Sayla suddenly acts like she didn't see him. Char gets into his Z'Gok to escape, and Amuro chases him. He cuts off the Z'Gok's arm and destroys four Acguys by himself. Char sees that Amuro's skills have greatly improved as he escapes. Afterward, the orphanage officer wants to take the kids back and says they are the future of the Federation Forces. Amuro says they should be allowed to hope for peace, and that the White Base is now their home. At a senior staff meeting, Bright is informed that when the White Base joins the Tianem Fleet, they will be engaged only in decoy actions.

Commentary

With this episode, most of movie 2's story is over, which means we are more than two thirds through the series. Though this is a good episode, it has many comic touches that remind me of Gundam ZZ. There's a snake at the beginning that's scared of the Acguys, the moronic officer trying to slap Amuro, and all the antics with the kids. However, there are a few developments here. First, Amuro's skills have increased so much that now Char has retreated in both of his recent attacks. Also, Sayla has her second fateful encounter with Char. She's now sure that he is her brother Casval, and he asks her to quit the Federation Forces. Finally, it seems like the status of the White Base has changed. Now that the Federation has the GM, they don't need the Gundam anymore. Before they depended on it and the ship, but they are now relegated to just decoys. Amuro is right - it definitely shows their lack of gratitude for what the crew does.
