Episode 38: Char and Sayla

Review by Chris Guanche

February 22, 2002

Summary

After killing M'quve, Amuro wonders who else is around. Lalah thanks Char for protecting her, and he tells her she's no ordinary soldier. He says he'll go teach the Gundam a lesson, and though she tells him to be careful, he asks her not to worry. On the White Base, Bright thinks that Amuro must be exhausted, and Fraw worries about him. Nearby, one of the officers on the Chibe wants to attack, but the captain says they will wait for reinforcements. As Lalah drives back to the Zanzibar, Amuro spots her and is sure that she is driving the car. Char moves in behind Amuro with the Gelgoog, and Amuro senses his attack. He chases Char and forces him to hide in the mountains. In the confusion, Char moves up to high ground and starts taking sniper shots at Amuro. Amuro knows Char's tactics all too well now, so he flies over Char and slices the beam rifle out of the Gelgoog's hand. Char responds by trying to slice into the Gundam with his beam saber as it rolls around on the ground. The Gundam moves slowly, but Amuro manages to evade the attack and hit the Gelgoog's side. Char escapes and sets off a bomb to make it seem like he exploded, but he doesn't think he can fool Amuro, whom he believes is a Newtype. Char leaves his Gelgoog behind and runs off. In space, Wakkein's Magellan detects the reinforcements for the Chibe and begins an attack. The captain of the Chibe orders his ships to move out from their hiding place and attack. Bright orders battle stations and sends Sayla out in the G-Fighter. Sayla attacks the Chibe and destroys it while Wakkein's ship destroys the reinforcements. The Magellan follows the White Base back to Texas, and Wakkein tells Bright he'll stay outside in case there are more Zeon forces around. The White Base enters Texas, and Bright asks Mirai to pinpoint the location where the explosion was detected. Mirai locates it and steers the ship in that direction.

After landing inside Texas, Bright sends Sayla and Job out in jeeps to find Amuro. Job runs into a herd of bulls and reports that he hasn't found Amuro yet. Bright sees that Fraw is distracted and tells her to visit Hayato so that he can take over the radio. Sayla reports that she can't see Amuro either when Char suddenly jumps inside the jeep with a gun. He reminds her that he asked her in Jaburo to quit the Federation Forces, and she asks him why he's still with the Zeon. Bright listens to the conversation and wonders who Sayla is talking to. Sayla tells Char she doesn't approve of him joining the Zeon so that he can get revenge for their father. Char tells her that Jinba Ral told him the truth about what happened to their father. He remembers seeing his father Zeon on his deathbed asking Degwin to take over for him. The thing is that Degwin was responsible for Zeon's assassination. Char could not forget what happened, so he joined the Zeon military to get as close as possible to the Zabi family. He tells Sayla that she must leave the White Base because she's not fit for war. He says he'll give her gold so that she can escape to Earth and have a nice life there. Before leaving, Char asks Sayla if he can see her face again, and he says she's beautiful. After he leaves, Sayla spots Amuro trying to repair the immobilized Gundam. Bright orders a Gunperry be sent out to pick up the Gundam, but he cancels the order when he hears that the Zanzibar is leaving Texas. The White Base flies over to Amuro's location to pick up the Gundam and head for space. Wakkein begins attacking the Zanzibar and asks Bright for help. Before the White Base arrives, the Zanzibar destroys the Magellan and escapes. Kai's Guncannon picks up a briefcase floating in space, and Bright salutes as the ship passes the wreckage of the Magellan. Bright asks Sayla who sent the briefcase, and she tells him that the briefcase contains gold and that the letter is from Char. Sayla later reads Char's letter in her room and begins to cry.

Commentary

The story behind Char and Sayla's relationship is finally explained here. In their first encounter back on Side 7, they recognized each other but couldn't believe what they saw. In Jaburo, they were sure of their identities, and Char asked Sayla to leave the Federation Forces. Now he's asking her again, and we know why. Sayla's encounter with Ramba Ral is now also put into context. Degwin was responsible for the death of Zeon Deikun, and Char wants his revenge. That is the reason why he allowed Garma to be killed, sort of a "sins of the father" type of thing. In this episode we also get to see Char fight in his Gelgoog, and it seems clear that Amuro's abilities are starting to surpass his own. This also represents a change from the third movie in that Wakkein doesn't get killed in battle.
