Episode 43: Escape

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Amuro and Char continue their battle, and Amuro asks Char why he made Lalah fight. Elsewhere, Kai and Hayato land on the surface of A Baoa Qu and encounter enemy suits. Amuro dodges the Zeong's wire-controlled hands and blows off one of the arms. At the same time, Char destroys the Gundam's shield and left arm. He escapes, and Amuro pursues. As Char flies up the side of A Baoa Qu, he puts on a normal suit and wonders how he will defeat a Newtype like Amuro. A cannon fires at the White Base and destroys its port engine, causing the ship to crash land on the surface of A Baoa Qu. Several Rick Doms appear and start shooting at the remaining starboard engine. Kai and Hayato quickly return to the ship to defend it while the crew prepares for hand-to-hand combat. Amuro knocks away Rick Doms as he searches for Char. He spots the Zeong and shoots it in the chest, but Char ejects in the head, where the cockpit is located. He catches Amuro by surprise and blows the Gundam's head off. Kycilia is informed that the Zeong has been destroyed, and she comments that Char no longer lives up to the name Red Comet. She informs Twanning that she will be escaping and that he is to surrender A Baoa Qu 15 minutes after she leaves. He says that it'll be difficult to escape, but she says that as long as she lives, Zeon lives. Amuro enters A Baoa Qu and walks through it blindly. He sees a passage up ahead and wonders if Char is there. He abandons the Gundam and allows it to walk by itself into the passage. The Gundam fires its beam rifle at the ceiling and hits the Zeong's head. Before the head is destroyed, it destroys the Gundam's right arm and leg, crippling it. Char escapes with a jetpack, and Amuro searches for him. He senses that the Zabi leader is nearby, and Char tells him he should be grateful for receiving such powers from Lalah. He says that Amuro is misguided in blaming him for making Lalah fight. Char says that if there hadn't been a war, her abilities would've probably never awakened. He also says he's going to kill Amuro because he is too dangerous of a Newtype. Hayato abandons the Guntank as it's destroyed, and Kai's Guncannon is heavily damaged as well. Sayla crash lands the G-Fighter near the White Base and enters A Baoa Qu to find Char. She sees him and Amuro dueling with rapiers and asks them to stop. Amuro drives his rapier into Char's helmet, and Char wounds Amuro in the arm. An explosion pushes Sayla over to them, and she tells Char that he has no reason to fight Amuro. Char answers that he has to take down dangerous enemies when he has the opportunity, and when she asks about the Zabis, he says they're no longer his primary enemy. Char says the age of Newtypes will be coming after Zeon falls, so he asks Amuro to fight at his side. Another explosion separates them, and Char rescues Sayla from a fire.

Amuro is knocked into a corridor and pulls the rapier tip out of his arm, which he then bandages. Char takes off his mask, and dying Twanning tells him that Kycilia is escaping. He grabs a bazooka and tells Sayla that he's realized he can't let the Zabis off. He tells Sayla she's a good woman and that she should leave because Amuro is calling for her. He then takes off and heads for the harbor. Char arrives at the harbor and finds a Zanzibar ship about to take off. He salutes Kycilia and says that he's sending her to be with Garma. He then fires his bazooka, which blasts through the bridge and decapitates Kycilia. The Zanzibar ship then crashes as it exits the harbor and explodes. Amuro is knocked around by explosions and falls into a passage. He ends up in the pit where the wreckage of the Gundam lies. He manually ejects the torso to access the Core Fighter and wonders what happened to the White Base's crew. He wonders if he'll die, and Lalah's voice tells him that Newtypes shouldn't be killing each other. Lalah says she can see Amuro anytime, and Amuro concentrates and sees the crew of the White Base fighting off the Zeon. He sees Sayla and gives her directions on how to escape from A Baoa Qu. He then contacts Bright and Mirai mentally and tells them that everyone will die if they don't abandon ship. He also contacts Kai and Hayato to give them the same message. Fraw is caught in a firefight with Zeon soldiers, and Amuro tells her and the kids how to escape safely. As the Space Launch shuttles fly off, the White Base explodes. Bright salutes the ship and says they would have all died if it wasn't for Amuro. Sayla escapes from A Baoa Qu and reaches the escape shuttles. She asks if Amuro is there and is told he didn't escape. Bright asks her to find Amuro since she's a Newtype, but she has no idea how to do that. Kikka, Katz and Letz contact Amuro and tell him how to escape. Kai and Hayato hear Amuro's voice and decide to retreat since the Federation is winning. As everyone awaits with anticipation, the Core Fighter emerges from A Baoa Qu after following the children's directions. Amuro tells Lalah that he still has a place to go home to, but they can be together anytime. The Core Fighter begins to drift, so Amuro jumps out of it and joins everyone on the escape shuttles. As January 1, 0080 begins, the One Year War ends. The Federation signs a treaty with the Republic of Zeon, and peace returns to the Earth Sphere... for the moment.

Commentary

So that's the end to the original series, and it's quite an epic ending. Char and Amuro have their final battle here, and it's clear that Amuro has become the superior pilot. The feud over Lalah is also temporarily resolved when Char realizes who his real enemy is. Kycilia is killed here, and she probably gets the worst death out of all the Zabis. Having your head blown off by a bazooka isn't the nicest way to go. Aside from the battles with our characters, the epic war between the Federation and Zeon finally ends. It seems that Tomino is also Blow 'Em Up Tomino because EVERYTHING explodes in this episode. A Baoa Qu, the Zeong, the Gundam, the Guntank and the White Base. Of course, this adds to the reality that in war anything can be destroyed. After examining the original ending that was intended for the series, I can see that this version was much better. It seems that putting Tomino under pressure to finish the series caused him to cut the story down and create something better than what he was planning. So the war is over and everyone is happy, at least until Zeta Gundam begins.
