Episode 16: Masters of the Deep Sea: GunDivers!

Review by Chris Guanche

February 17, 2004

Summary

GunEagle flies over the ocean and detects the crashed Komusai. Chief Haro confirms the presence of the Komusai, and he orders Shute and the Gundam Force to recover it. Shute sees that Zero and Bakunetsumaru feel awkward, and he asks them if they can swim. Captain says he can't swim either, and Kao Lyn says he has the perfect solution. He introduces two twin underwater GunDiver units. The two GunDivers launch from the SDG base and dive into the water. Shute follows in a Ball along with Captain. Captain orders the GunDivers to being their search, and they transform to submarine mode. Elsewhere, Zapper, Grappler and Gouf swim underwater with Zako soldiers to find the Komusai. Grappler spots Captain, and everyone hides behind coral reefs. Grappler wonders if they want the Komusai too and decides to watch their actions. The GunDivers approach the Komusai and transform to mecha mode. As the SDG base, Bakunetsumaru worries about the GunDivers, and GunBike tells him they are far more reliable than he is. Shute hopes they can learn Dark Axis secrets from the Komusai and use that knowledge to save Lacroa and Ark. The Dark Axis forces fire missiles, and the GunDivers attack them. The GunDivers use their beam tridents and missiles to fight off Zapper and the others. At the SDG base, Zero offers to go underwater to defend the GunDivers, despite his inability to swim. Captain pulls out his beam saber to fight Zapper, but the weapon is useless underwater. Zapper laughs at him and tells him he's useless underwater. Captain then fires his vulcans, but Zapper easily dodges them. Destroyer begins randomly firing and hits the Komusai, knocking it off a cliff with Shute's Ball. As the two fall deeper into the ocean, Captain swims down after Shute.

The GunDivers go after Shute and Captain, and Grappler scolds Destroyer for his stupidity. He tells him they have to recover the Komusai or face punishment from Commander. The GunDivers swim ahead of Captain and use their power to stop the Komusai's descent. Captain catches up to the Komusai and tells Shute he will get him out of there. He then swims down to help the GunDivers. The Komusai begins to fall, and the GunDivers tell Captain they are approaching a depth of 10,000 meters, which Shute says will crush them. Suddenly, the Dark Axis forces arrive to help them push the Komusai up. They have no choice because Commander will be angry at them for losing the new Komusai. At the SDG base, Chief Haro sends GunDiver units 3-7 to help with the Komusai recovery. As the Komusai continues to descend, the five extra GunDivers arrive. Captain orders them to disable the output limiters, and with the extra power they are able to push the Komusai up to a safe level. Captain then breaks Shute's Ball free from the Komusai. Shute thanks the GunDivers for rescuing him, and he also thanks the Dark Axis. The Dark Axis forces are confused, and Zapper says it might be okay to help out once in a while. Grappler bonks him on the head and tells him they can't do that. Zapper and the others then jump onto the Komusai to reclaim it, but it goes out of control again from the control horns. It begins firing all its weapons randomly, and Chief Haro gives permission for the GunDivers to attack it. The GunDivers fire their Rainbow Seven Vortex and create a cyclone of water that sends the Komusai and Dark Axis forces away. Shute and the others return to the ship, and Chief Haro says he is glad everyone is safe. Zero says the GunDivers are second to none, and GunEagle butts in and says they are second to him. GunBike complains about not being able to do anything during the mission, and Shute says maybe the next attack will be a highway. On the Zako Zako Hour, the Zakos discuss how they keep losing to new guys like GunEagle and the GunDivers. They realize they need help to beat the Gundams, and Commander gives them new orders.

Commentary

Last time we were introduced to the new Gundam GunEagle, and this time we see the new GunDiver squad. These guys are based on the Re-GZ from Char's Counterattack, but there are some significant differences. Unlike the Re-GZ, these guys transform into submarines. Speaking of Char's Counterattack, the scene where the Dark Axis forces and Gundams work together to push up the Komusai up is reminiscent of the scene in the movie where the Neo Zeon suits join with Amuro to push Axis out of Earth's atmosphere. Overall, this was a typical episode.
