Gundam SEED Supernova: SEED Character Theater

Review by Chris Guanche

August 26, 2009

Note: While SEED SUPERNOVA's SEED Character Theater isn't actually part of SD Gundam, it does feature super deformed characters. And frankly, there's no other place to stick this review.

SEED Character Theater 1: Gundam Jealousy

Yzak Joule is angry about always losing to Athrun Zala and vows to Dearka Elsman that he'll figure out Athrun's secret. Yzak and Dearka watch Athrun and Kira Yamato play a Haro video game, and they both beat each other. Yzak thinks that if he can release SEED power, he can beat them. They then watch a wild LaGOWE attack Cagalli Yula Athha and Lacus Clyne on the street, and Cagalli uses SEED power to shoot at the LaGOWE. Lacus then uses SEED power to ask the LaGOWE if barking makes it happy. Yzak realizes that the power comes out when you're in trouble, so he has several BuCUEs bit him. It doesn't work, and neither does Dearka shooting him. Dearka then drags Yzak along the ground, but that doesn't work either. Yzak then realizes that everyone used their power when with a friend, so he decides to test it by throwing Dearka off a cliff. Unfortunately, nothing happens. Yzak then decides to directly challenge Athrun.

SEED Character Theater 2: Beach Volleyball Showdown

Wearing strange red shorts, Yzak and Dearka prepare to challenge Kira and Athrun at beach volleyball. Kira and Athrun form the blue shorts team, Cagalli acts as announcer and Lacus provides commentary. Cagalli announces that there will be no rules, and that the first team to get to 50 points wins. Kira hits the ball, and Yzak draws an ugly Haro on it so that they won't be able to hit it. Kira and Athrun are disgusted and knock Yzak out with the ball. As the match continues, Kira and Athrun easily rack up 49 points. On the last serve, Yzak grabs Dearka for a combined formation and kicks the ball with Dearka's foot. The ball bounces back, and a bad smell from Dearka stepping in dog crap knocks out Kira and Athrun. With the two of them down, Yzak mercilessly attacks and brings the score to a tie. Yzak becomes jealous when he sees Lacus and Cagalli consoling them and unleashes SEED power. Unfortunately, he attacks the ball so hard that he destroys it, thus losing the game.

SEED Character Theater 3: Durandal Destiny 1

ZAFT Chairman Gilbert Durandal calls Rey Za Burrel, Shinn Asuka and Lunamaria Hawke to give them orders. Because they're interfering with his plans, Durandal wants to break up the friendship between Kira and Athrun. Lunamaria asks her sister Meyrin for info, and she says that their friendship dates back to a gift exchange of the robot pet Birdy. Rey then pulls out a magic wand that sends them back in time to when Kira and Athrun first met. Meyrin tells them that Kira and Athrun have high friendship levels, so they can lower it by destroying Birdy. Shinn and the others spot Birdy and are shocked to see that it's a giant monster. After getting knocked around, Shinn uses SEED power to slam into Birdy and destroy it. Athrun is upset that the proof of their friendship has been destroyed, and the others return to the future. Kira cries, and Athrun says he'll just make another. Their friendship level continues to rise and destroys Meyrin's computer in the future. Shinn and the others return to the future and get a phone call from Durandal about failing the mission. However, he has another mission for them.

SEED Character Theater 4: Durandal Destiny 2

Durandal's next mission is for Shinn and the others to break up the relationship between Kira and Lacus. Lunamaria is knocked out when she sees Kira and Lacus trying to kiss. Rey then sneaks into their house and dumps entire bottles of hot sauce into Kira's soup. Kira drinks the soup and enjoys it, commenting that it's the best in the world. Rey doesn't understand and samples a bit of the hot sauce, which knocks him out. Left alone, Shinn decides to intervene at one of Lacus' concerts. He sneaks into her dressing room and steals her dress so that she can't go on stage. He sees Kira in the hallway and realizes he'll get caught, so he puts the dress on and pretends to be Lacus. Kira is creeped out and runs back to his seat. The ghost of Rey gives Shinn voice changing pills that make him sound like Lacus. Shinn then goes out on stage and pulls out a sword, which he uses to smash the stage as he sings. He thinks this will shock the audience, but they actually love it. Shinn then loses it and keeps singing. Lacus finds a dress and comes on stage, which is covered in flames. Kira gives her a bouquet, and their love energy increases. Outside the concert hall, the ghost of Lunamaria tells Shinn that singing 100 songs was overdoing it.

Commentary

Although SUPERNOVA isn't technically SD Gundam, these shorts are certainly in the same spirit. Covering both SEED and DESTINY, these shorts focus on the misadventures of Yzak and Shinn. After his constant failures in unlocking SEED power, Yzak tries to win at volleyball, with amusing results. Similarly, Shinn tries to break up Kira's relationships and fails spectacularly. While these shorts are amusing in their own right, like SD Gundam, they have more comedic context if you've seen the shows they're based on. If you like the SEED series, you'll probably get a good laugh out of SUPERNOVA's Character Theater.
