Phase 11: The Chosen Path

Review by Chris Guanche

January 1, 2005

Summary

In a fit of rage, Djibril smashes bottles of alcohol while under intense criticism from the other members of Blue Cosmos. They are criticizing him for being so hasty to declare war against ZAFT and then quickly retreat when the nuclear attack failed. They wonder what their next move should be, and Djibril declares that they will return to their original plan to wipe out Coordinators. In the PLANTs, Durandal and the Supreme Council approve a measure to deploy ZAFT forces to defend PLANT's right to exist. In Orb, Cagalli argues with the other government officials about the proposed alliance with the Atlantic Federation. She insists that they can't possibly ally themselves with a country that unilaterally declared war and used a nuclear attack. Yuna interrupts her and tells her she should stop being childish. He says that everyone knows the Atlantic Federation is forceful, but what choice do they have? If they shun the other nations of Earth and ally themselves with ZAFT, they risk damaging their country the same way it was damaged two years before. Cagalli says she wants to be neutral as before, and Unato tells her they can't do that. He says it's better to deal with the problem through a peace treaty, and he asks her to consider the safety of Orb's citizens as a top priority. After the meeting, Yuna apologizes to Cagalli for his comments, but she tells him she's still immature. He tells her she looks tired and gives her a kiss on her forehead. He pauses when he sees Athrun's ring on her finger. At Morgenroete, Arthur again tells Talia that they should leave Orb. Talia explains that they have to re-supply the ship, and she doesn't want to do anything too quickly. The Alliance fleet sent to attack Carpentaria is holding position, and a sudden movement by the Minerva could upset the situation. In space, ZAFT vessels and mobile suits approach Earth to begin a drop operation. In an Orb mansion, Andy watches the news while Lacus sleeps with the orphans. Kira sits outside with Birdy and thinks about the deaths of Flay Allster and Tolle Koenig.

In a PLANT, Athrun answers his door and is manhandled by Yzak. Yzak comes into the apartment with Dearka and asks what's going on. He says they're both busy and were pulled from the battlefield to provide escort service. Dearka thinks that because of the current situation, Athrun isn't allowed to roam the city freely as a foreign citizen. Athrun says he was told he'd have to have an escort to go out, but he didn't expect it would be the two of them. As they leave, Yzak says that if Athrun wants to go shopping, he'll never forgive him. Athrun says he wants to go to the cemetery because he doesn't get a chance to visit the PLANTs too often. At the cemetery, the three of them lay flowers at the graves of Nicol Amalfi, Rusty Mackenzie and Miguel Aiman. They tell Athrun that ZAFT is making its move, and Dearka thinks the Alliance won't give up with their attempts to annihilate Coordinators. Yzak asks Athrun to come back to ZAFT and promises to help arrange things. He says that he and Dearka should have died long ago, and he mentions something that Durandal said about not punishing young people for fighting in the war because they have to carry PLANT's future. Yzak says he's still in ZAFT because it's the only thing he can do to protect people and carry on for his dead friends. Yuna speaks with Unato about finalizing the treaty and promises to put Cagalli in her place. In Orb, Andy sends out a broadcast on a secret ZAFT radio channel to the Minerva. He tells Talia that they have to leave Orb as soon as ZAFT drops forces to Gibraltar and Carpentaria because Orb will join with the Alliance. Talia says she won't accept messages from anonymous sources, and Andy tells her it's a message from the Desert Tiger. Talia decides to depart from Orb the next morning. At the government offices, Yuna informs Cagalli that Orb will be signing the treaty to prevent a repeat of the disaster from two years before. Cagalli comes to the Minerva and runs into Shinn, Lunamaria and Rey. Shinn asks her how she could ally herself with the people who attacked Orb before, and he says if Orb is his enemy now he will destroy the country himself. She then apologizes to Talia before the Minerva launches. Later, Yuna tells Cagalli that the situation couldn't be helped. He promises to be there for her and says they should push their wedding forward. At the PLANT, Athrun requests a meeting with Durandal.

Commentary

The situation certainly isn't looking very good. The Alliance has made its move, and ZAFT is preparing to attack the Alliance forces surrounding Carpentaria and Gibraltar. Orb casts its lot with the Atlantic Federation, leaving Cagalli in an unpleasant situation. Although Yuna is clearly a schemer, he does have a point. Following an idealistic path of neutrality led to the invasion that devastated Orb two years earlier. With the extremely hawkish Atlantic Federation stirring up trouble again, taking the path of neutrality will only yield the same devastating results for Orb. On the PLANT side, it's good to see Yzak and Dearka out of battle. While Dearka is as laid back as ever, we see more of Yzak's transformation. Although he still has a quick temper, there's another side to him. He's gone from being Kira's hopeless rival to a principled soldier who fights for what he believes in. It's a welcome change for his character.
