Phase 36: Athrun on the Run

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Durandal explains to Shinn that the Destiny Gundam's abilities exceed those of the Impulse Gundam on every level. He then tells Athrun that the Legend Gundam has been equipped with a DRAGOON system that features a new quantum control system which allows anyone to use it. He then tells Shinn that the Destiny Gundam has been personally tuned for him by using the Impulse Gundam's combat data. He tells Shinn that his power is amazing, but Shinn doesn't think so. Durandal asks Athrun what he thinks about the new DRAGOON system, and Athrun asks him why he issued the order for Operation Angel Down. He says that the Archangel wasn't their enemy and had the same goal as ZAFT in ending the war. Durandal says that if that is true, the Archangel should've joined with ZAFT, but they didn't. He said that the Freedom Gundam was too powerful, and he couldn't allow such power to run around freely. He goes on to say that he believes Kira was ill-fated. He says that Kira possessed tremendous power, and that if he fought for ZAFT he would have had no equal. Instead, he says, Kira was a puppet who wasted his power. He says that people can't accomplish anything unless they understand their purpose in life. Durandal asks for their help to create a peaceful world, and although Shinn agrees, Athrun says nothing. In Iceland, Djibril arrives at the Atlantic Federation's Supreme Headquarters, Heavens Base. At Gibraltar, a rogue Alliance fleet from the Republic of East Asia docks and joins forces with ZAFT. Orb's Ledonir Kisaka is aboard one of the ships, disguised as an Alliance officer. Talia feels uneasy about the Alliance fleet docking at Gibraltar, and Arthur makes the offhanded comment that if the fleet betrayed them, the base would be destroyed. Talia wonders if the combined forces of Gibraltar and the Alliance fleet will be enough to destroy Heavens Base. On the base, Rey meets with Durandal. Durandal asks Rey how he feels and apologizes for what happened to him at Lodonia. Rey says it's okay because he also had no idea about what would happen. In another part of the room, Meer overhears their conversation and spots one of Lunamaria's spy photos of Athrun meeting with Kira.

In his room at the base, Athrun thinks about his last conversation with Kira. Meer comes into the room and tells Athrun he needs to stop acting suspiciously after not saying anything to Durandal. He asks what she means, and she tells him that Durandal will consider him to be of no use. She shows him one of the spy photos and tells him what she overheard from Rey's conversation with Durandal. Rey said that Athrun's attachment to the Archangel and Freedom Gundam was greater than they expected. Durandal said that for a mobile suit pilot, Athrun thought too much about unnecessary things. He said that Athrun won't be of use for the role he intended for him. He then told Rey they have enough evidence to accuse Athrun, and he asked Rey to take care of it. Just as Meer finishes explaining, several soldiers knock on the door and say they want to ask Athrun some questions. Athrun tells her that Durandal knows he won't be an obedient dog for him. The soldiers storm the room and find Meer standing by the broken window. The soldiers go out onto the ledge, and Athrun attacks them, knocking all of them out and grabbing a machine gun. He takes Meer outside in the rain and asks her to come with him. She refuses and says she is Lacus. Athrun tells her that people are useful to Durandal as long as they play the roles he assigns to them, and when her usefulness is at an end, she'll die too. Meer says she doesn't care if it's all fake because she wants to live as Lacus. She tells Athrun he should play his role, but he runs away. A few moments later, Athrun barges into Meyrin's room and tells her he just wants to escape. Soldiers knock on her door, and he tells her to scream after he leaves, but she comes up with another plan. She takes Athrun to the bathroom and quickly undresses before wetting herself with water from the shower head. She wraps a towel around herself and answers the door. Lunamaria asks her what she's doing, and she says she was taking a shower. After everyone leaves, Athrun thanks Meyrin for saving her. He asks her why she did it, but she says she doesn't know. She runs to her computer console and sets off an alarm at the port to distract the soldiers. They run outside and head for the mobile suit hangar in a car. Athrun asks Meyrin what she'll do, and she tells him it's better for him to leave than die. Rey enters the hangar and fires his machine gun at them. He tells Athrun he'll never forgive him for betraying Durandal. Athrun jumps out and fires, knocking the machine gun out of Rey's hand. He reaches out to Meyrin and the two board a GOUF Ignited as Rey fires again. Athrun takes off, and Rey tells Shinn to prepare for launch. Meyrin asks Athrun what they'll do now, and he says he's going to find the Archangel. Rey jumps into the Legend Gundam, and when Shinn asks why they have to chase a spy, Rey tells him the spy is Athrun.

Commentary

The title of this episode pretty much tells you what will happen before it happens. Since the battle with the Orb fleet, Athrun has been pathetically moping around. He objected to Operation Angel Down, and his objections eventually lead to this situation. Durandal is frequently shown playing chess, and he talks of the war as a chess game and treats people as pieces to manipulate. He had a plan for Athrun to become a star pilot, perhaps the ZAFT version of Kira. Athrun doesn't go along with this, but he returns to form with his daring escape. It's all made possible by Meyrin, but her motives are a bit unclear. So far, her interaction with Athrun has been like that of a high school girl with a crush, so that's probably her motive. Rey's been pretty silent for most of the series, but we see here that he's Durandal's co-conspirator and go-to guy to do dirty work. Athrun may have escaped, but he'll have a tough fight on his hands against two brand new Gundams.
