Phase 47: Meer

Review by Chris Guanche

October 3, 2005

Summary

Athrun carries Meer's body through a corridor in the Archangel with the entire crew watching. Neo tells Murrue what happened and says he feels pathetic because he couldn't do anything to save Meer. Kira asks Athrun if he knew anything about Meer other than her real name, and Athrun answers that he never bothered to ask her anything. Lacus looks through Meer's purse and finds a disk. When she loads the disk in a computer terminal, she sees that it's Meer's diary. She reads the first entry, dated October 11, C.E. 73, which chronicles Meer seeing herself for the first time after her plastic surgery. Meer described how amazed she was about how she looked like Lacus. After that, she began the hard task of studying Lacus to pick up her manner and behavior. A few days later, she described her first meeting with Durandal after the Break the World incident. She found out that the real Lacus wasn't at the PLANTs, so Durandal wanted her to become Lacus. After that, she describes meeting Athrun and having dinner with him. She described Athrun as a cool and serious guy, and she believed he must be deeply in love with Lacus. The next entries cover Meer's time on Earth performing for ZAFT soldiers at various bases. She really enjoys singing for the crowd and is glad everyone loves Lacus, but deep down inside she knows she's still a fake. The diary continues with more about Athrun, saying that he can act strangely at times. Meer goes on to say that her words are Lacus' words, and she hopes she can change people. As the war continued, Meer stated that even she couldn't forgive what the Alliance was doing. Meer said she was so surprised to see a pink ZAKU Warrior created just for her, so she vowed to work harder as Lacus.

Athrun and Kira leave the room, and Lacus continues to read Meer's diary. Lacus begins to cry as she reads the entries chronicling Meer's delusions about believing she was Lacus. Meer said that she was doing the things Durandal said had saved the world. Her next entry covered Athrun's defection at Gibraltar and her inability to understand his actions. She felt confused by what he told her about Durandal's true nature, but she insisted she was Lacus. Outside the Archangel, Athrun tells Kira that he should've never accepted Meer as the fake Lacus and should've said something to Durandal. Kira tells him there was nothing he could've done at the time because so much was unknown. He then says that he and Lacus would've believed everything Durandal said if he hadn't sent assassins after Lacus. He had thought Durandal was trustworthy at first because he said he didn't want to fight. Lacus continues to read and reaches the last entry in the diary, which was soon after she made her first public appearance and unmasked Meer as a fake. Lacus cries in Kira's arms and vows she will never forget Meer. Later, Meer's body is placed in a coffin filled with flowers and taken away in a truck. At Messiah, Durandal gives a speech which is broadcast throughout space and Earth. He says that after the first war, everyone vowed not to let the same tragedy happen again, but it still happened nonetheless. He says this was due to Logos manipulating people and stoking the fires of war. Now that Logos has been defeated, Durandal says they must fight another enemy - their own ignorance and ambition. Durandal says that even after all of humanity's advancements, ambition leads them into conflict after conflict. Durandal says that the answer to this problem is inside each person. To save all of mankind, Durandal announces the introduction of his Destiny Plan.

Commentary

It really is such a shame that so much time is being wasted this close to the end of the series. The idea behind Lacus reading Meer's diary isn't bad, but in the end it's a waste because we don't learn anything new. We already knew how excited Meer was to become Lacus and help Durandal. We all know how Meer was poisoned by fame and deluded herself into believing that she was Lacus. All this episode really did was waste time with clips and a new Meer song. Instead of covering the same ground with Meer again, would it have been too much trouble to devote an episode to what happened to Mu and how he became Neo? That's a dangling thread that has so far received no attention. The end of the episode focuses on Durandal's announcement of the Destiny Plan, which we already know the details of. Too bad that this episode has no time for Shinn or anyone on the Minerva.
