Phase 19: Fangs of the Enemy

Summary

Two jeeps from the rebel camp enter the city of Banadiya. Kira and Cagalli get out of one to buy food and supplies in the city. In the other jeep, Natarle, Sahib, Jackie Tonomura and Kisaka drive off to meet with a water and arms dealer named Al Jairi. Kira thinks that the city seems quite active and peaceful for being occupied by ZAFT. Cagalli tells him that's how it is on the surface, and she shows him an area destroyed by battle. Kira can see the Lesseps parked nearby, and Cagalli tells him that is what runs the city. On the Archangel, Murrue and Mu watch as Flay and Murdoch clean all the garbage out of the Strike Gundam's cockpit. Murrue is surprised to discover that Flay is involved with Kira, and Mu explains that it must have happened after they landed on Earth because there was no time before that for anything. Murrue blames herself because Kira is such a good pilot that she forgot he had no formal training and lacks discipline. She asks Mu if he can put some discipline into Kira, and he instead looks her over. On the bridge, Sai thinks about being reunited with Flay and what happened between him and Kira. Miriallia is worried since Kira is gone, but Tolle assures her they'll be fine. Though Kira is supposed to act as Cagalli's bodyguard, he instead is forced to carry all the bags. In a well-to-do suburb, Natarle and Sahib meet with Al Jairi. Sahib and Al Jairi argue before agreeing to discuss terms at Al Jairi's factory. Kira and Cagalli sit down for lunch, and she tells him that Flay asked for fancy creams and lotions that are impossible to get. A waiter serves them lunch, and Cagalli explains to Kira that it's a kebab. As she is about to put chili sauce on her kebab, Andy rushes in and insists that she should use yogurt sauce instead. They both try to get Kira to use their sauce and end up covering his kebab with both of them. On a nearby rooftop, Blue Cosmos terrorists prepare to attack Andy. They fire a bazooka at Andy, and he kicks up a table and knocks Kira and Cagalli onto the ground. As more terrorists rush in with machine guns, Andy and his men pull out their guns and fight back. Kira picks up a gun and throws it a terrorist and then kicks him. Andy thanks Kira, and when he takes off his sunglasses and hat, Cagalli realizes who he really is.

Al Jairi takes Natarle and the others to his secret factory. He shows them stolen Alliance ammunition, and both Natarle and Tonomura verify that they're authentic. Natarle asks Al Jairi how he could get his hands on so much contraband, and he says there are many underground routes people know nothing about. Sahib and Kisaka discuss payment with Al Jairi, and Tonomura asks Natarle what's going on. Elsewhere, Andy brings Kira and Cagalli with him to the palace where he is headquartered. Though they want to leave, he wants to thank them and clean up Cagalli since she is covered in chili and yogurt sauce. When they go inside, Andy has his girlfriend Aisha take Cagalli away to be cleaned up. He pours himself and Kira some coffee, and Kira examines a miniature of the space whale fossil. Andy identifies it as the "Evidence 01 Whale Stone" and says it's an interesting piece. It is proof that extraterrestrial life exists in deep space, but he finds it troubling. Though it looks like a whale with wings, why would it have wings? Cagalli sits in a bathtub while Aisha picks out a dress for her. Kira and Andy discuss the whale, and Any says that because it's a sign of hope and possibilities, it's at the heart of the war. Aisha brings in Cagalli in a nice dress, and Kira calls her a girl. When she gets mad, Andy and Aisha laugh at them. Elsewhere, Kisaka calls Murrue and tells them he can't find Kira and Cagalli because of an attack by Blue Cosmos terrorists. Andy asks Kira how as a mobile suit pilot he thinks the war will end. He pulls out a gun and asks Kira if a war ends by killing all enemies. He says he saw Kira fighting and knows he's a Coordinator, which surprises Cagalli. He says that Kira may fight like a berserker, but he can't escape from a palace filled with Coordinators. He also says he doesn't know why Kira is fighting his own kind, but as long as he pilots the Strike Gundam, they're enemies. He puts the gun away and tells them to go home. On the Archangel, Sai tries to pilot the Strike Gundam and fails miserably when it crashes on the ground in the hangar.

Commentary

Following the battle in the last episode, this one is expectedly a non-action character development episode. However, a few things occur here. Kira meets Andy and Aisha, and this friendly encounter is much like when Amuro Ray met Ramba Ral and Crowley Hamon. This probably means that Andy and Aisha will be dying soon if the storyline follows through. Aside from being into coffee, Andy also seems to like kebabs with yogurt sauce a lot. He certainly is eccentric. The Blue Cosmos group mentioned long ago finally gets a face here, and they're nothing more than terrorists. However, because of their views, Flay would probably fit in perfectly with them. That space whale that George Glenn found shows up again, but it really isn't explained. Andy mentions that the ideas presented by its discovery are at the root of the war, but he doesn't elaborate. Aside from these developments, there's also a few scenes of comic relief, such as the kebab scene and when Kira calls Cagalli a girl, repeating it in the same way when he found out she was a girl all the way back in the first episode.
