Episode 10: Grave Visit

Review by Chris Guanche

June 4, 2002

Summary

Loran and Sochie ride the Turn A through the forest. She doesn't care much about the instruction manual and is humiliated that Loran saved her. At the castle, Guin and Kihel talk about the Moonrace, and Guin knows they have reasons for coming to Earth. Miran shows up and asks if he can borrow Kihel. Loran hides the Turn A in the trees and tells Sid and Joseph about the Turn A's beam saber. Loran and Sochie arrive at the castle, and Sochie receives a phone call from Jessica. Jessica says that Mrs. Heim is getting worse and she begs Sochie and Kihel to come visit. Guin and Kihel meet with Dianna, and she says things didn't go so well when she first arrived on Earth. She sees the airship pulling up, and Guin tells her it is being used to survey battle damage and pick up refugees. Kihel says the view is beautiful, and Dianna decides she would like to ride it. Guin and Miran leave Dianna and Kihel alone so they can make preparations. Kihel and Dianna have tea and joke about how much they look alike. Elsewhere, Keith watches as the Militia excavates the FLAT. Michael gives him his money, and Keith says he will build a big bakery. Dianna wonders what to wear to the airship, and Kihel tells her to dress casually. Dianna asks her to try on a dress and then her own clothes. Dressed as Dianna, Kihel pretends to be her and they laugh together. Kihel sees that Dianna is a lonely person, and Miran knocks on the door. Dianna tells Kihel to pretend to be her and that she will pretend to be Kihel. As Kihel walks around in Dianna's clothes, she sees that Dianna likes to play around. Loran and Sochie report to Guin and tell him about the Turn A's beam saber as well. Sochie tells Guin that her mother isn't doing well and that she'd like to go to Vicinity and visit her. Guin tells her the airship is going to Vicinity and that she can come along with them.

Dianna, Kihel, Guin and Miran board the airship. As Kihel looks around the airship, Dianna reminds her to speak elegantly as a queen should. The airship takes off, followed by Harry's SUMO and two others. Dianna and Kihel both have a look at the beautiful landscape that is scarred by war. Dianna says the view is different every day on Earth, and Miran asks why she would say that if she's seen it before. Kihel says that the view on the Earth is always changing, and Dianna says that the Moon never changes. Guin asks if he can borrow Kihel and takes Dianna with him. He takes her to another room in the cabin where Loran and Sochie are sitting. Guin thinks Dianna is dressed wrongly for the trip and may attract attention from Militia soldiers in Vicinity. He asks if she can use Kihel's clothes, and Dianna agrees. In the other room, Miran tells Kihel he doesn't like the idea of going to where the Militia is. Kihel says she must see how people are living. Sochie asks Dianna how she can be so happy being with the woman responsible for Diran's death and their mother's insanity. Loran asks her to be understanding, so she backs down. Guin asks her to understand and promise he will bring a good end to everything. After arriving in Vicinity, the group travels in two cars through the war-torn town to the Heim residence. Jessica greets everyone, and Loran tells Kihel she can go inside if she wants. Inside, Mrs. Heim asks Sochie how she is doing and tells her that Diran is off on mine business. She sees Dianna and asks her to come over. Dianna tells her she was busy at college, and she thinks about how her war is spreading to these people. Sochie tells Dianna it is time to see Diran. Outside, Sochie sits and prays in front of Diran's tombstone. Dianna rushes to the tombstone and cries out that she was sorry she couldn't come earlier. Kihel begins to cry and quietly thanks Dianna. She wonders if what Dianna is saying is sincere.

Commentary

This episode is quite a change from the previous ones. After being introduced to Corin last time, I was expecting that in typical Gundam fashion he would show up here again to harass Loran. Instead, we get a character driven episode focusing on Kihel and Dianna. We also see more of Sochie's hatred of the Moonrace, but here she relents a bit on it. Up to now, Dianna's appearances have mainly been in regards to politics, so now we get to see the human side of her. She seems to be a woman trapped by her position that wants to break out and have some fun. As expected, this involves switching places with Kihel. They continue the gag and seem to fool everyone else with it as well. Dianna gets to see first hand the effects of her war, and her graveside confessional at the end of the episode seems very sincere. Since the two women keep switching places for the rest of the series, it's going to be kind of tricky to track them in these reviews.
