Episode 13: An Older Woman

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

The Almaiya and Soleil fly over the ruins of Nocis, and Kihel worries about everyone down there. Elsewhere, Loran and Dianna sleep near a cave and are woken up by Sid. Nearby, Pou's Wodom and some Wads search the area. They find the abandoned Gozzos in the cave, but no sign of Bruno or Jacop. Loran and Dianna ride in the Turn A to a part of the mountain where Sid has found Corin's Minchi drill and is trying to retrieve it. The Wad pilots find some parts of the Eagail above the lava pit, and they tell Pou that Corin doesn't seem to be around. Loran and Dianna have lunch in the Turn A as it heads to a position that Sid wants to dig in. Loran uses the Minchi drill to dig into the side of a dried up riverbed. Dianna runs off, and Loran wonders where she is. Sid thinks she is probably curious about the area, and Loran says that Kihel hasn't seen much of the countryside. Dianna sees a man digging down the river and recognizes him as Will Game. She hugs him and introduces herself as Dianna Soriel, but he seems confused. As Loran searches for Dianna he trips on a rock and meets a redheaded woman named Teteth Halleh. Will explains to Dianna that he looks like his grandfather, who is connected to the legend of Queen Dianna from the Moon. Teteth spots Dianna and tries to kill her with a rock, but Loran stops her. She says she is trying to kill Dianna Soriel, and Loran insists that it is Kihel Heim. Teteth apologizes, and Loran asks Dianna what Will is digging. She says she hasn't had the time to ask him yet. Loran moves the Turn A inside Will's cave, and the Wad pilots report that to Pou. Sid comes over, and Will explains he is digging up what he believes is a spaceship. He remembers hearing from his family about the legend of Dianna Soriel. Sid looks at the excavation, and Loran wonders if the spaceship is from the same time as the Turn A. Dianna remembers spending time with the first Will Game decades ago, when he asked her to marry him, and she accepted.

Dianna sleeps in Will's cave, and Teteth looks at the Turn A's open cockpit. Loran quickly closes it and tells her to get away from his suit. Teteth apologizes and identifies Loran as being of the Moonrace. She tells him to come with her to a hot spring, where she gets naked and jumps in. Loran joins her and asks if she is of the Moonrace as well. She says her ancestors were of the Moonrace and asks Loran why he is helping the Militia. Loran becomes suspicious of her and asks what she will do when Will's spaceship is excavated. Dianna asks Will what happened to his grandfather, and Will says he died on the way back from exploring the world. Dianna remembers that she didn't get to see Will because she had to go back to the Moon and take care of things there before going into artificial stasis. She wonders if as a queen she can only do her job and nothing more. She runs off, and Loran chases after her. A rock falls from above, and Loran sees a Wad standing on top of the river bed. He tells Teteth to find Dianna while he gets the Turn A ready to fight. Loran grabs the Minchi drill and runs into the cave he came out of before to lure the Wads in. As Pou watches from outside, Loran uses the Minchi drill to create cave ins and bash the Wads. Teteth finds Dianna and sees that she is all right. Pou asks the Wads to come out and back her up, but Loran has disabled them all. He faces her in a forest and pulls out his beam saber. Pou punches at Loran and knocks the Turn A away. He grabs the beam saber and slices apart the Wodom's head. It explodes, and Pou is forced to escape. As she leaves, Pou cries about how pathetic of a pilot she is to be beaten by the Turn A so many times. Later, everyone goes to Will's house, which was built by his grandfather. Dianna spots an old tree that the other Will planted as a sapling. Will shows her a music box and she begins to cry. He leaves to help Sid with something, and Dianna gets on her knees and cries out for the other Will.

Commentary

There's a few developments here, mainly relating to Dianna. She recognizes this Will Game guy, but at first he doesn't know her. Later we see that his ancestor was involved with Dianna and asked her to marry him. It seems that Dianna came to Earth long ago and then went back to the Moon and was placed in stasis. Perhaps this was an early negotiation for the return of the Moonrace to Earth. We also see more of Dianna's personal side here. As a Queen she is bound to her duty, but we see that she is a gentle and fragile girl who wants to love as well. Even one fourth of the way through the show I'm convinced she's probably the best written female Gundam character ever. We also meet the suspicious and attractive Teteth Halleh in this episode, who turns out to be related to the Moonrace. I have to wonder why she tried to kill Dianna though. That's a mystery for another time.
