Episode 20: Anise Power

Review by Chris Guanche

June 18, 2002

Summary

Several Hip Heavies attack a FLAT from the air and drop bombs on it. Nearby, Gavane's Suicide Squad investigates. He sends Aims across the river to search for the enemy, and a FLAT jumps out from the ground. Aims fires his machine gun at the FLAT, but the bullets bounce of its armor and damage his Borjarnon. Gavane jumps over and tries to punch the FLAT, but he is repelled by the FLAT's vibrating attack. The FLAT begins to vibrate and disturb the ground, forcing Gavane and Aims to retreat. On the Gallop, Ladderum and Horace work on the Turn A. Loran and Dianna talk about the nearby battle, and he notices that one house is still inhabited. At the nearby house, Bruno and Jacop toil away in a potato field under the watchful eye of a donkey belonging to an old lady named Anise Bell. As the Turn A approaches, Bruno and Jacop think it's coming for them and try to escape, but the donkey kicks them. Anise comes out and says she won't be scared off by a mobile suit that's come to destroy her fields, so she starts whacking the Turn A's foot with a pitchfork. She eventually gives up and gets knocked away when Loran lowers the cockpit from the pelvis. He tells her it is dangerous to stay, but she refuses to leave. Gavane wonders how he will fight off four FLATs, and Sochie and Miashei show up with bags of powder. They spread the powder over the ground and draw the Flats into the area. They fire and ignite the powder, which burns the Flats Sochie explains that the powder was developed for them by Moonrace citizens. The Gallop is resupplied, and Dianna takes a car out to see Loran. Anise refuses to leave until her crop is harvested, so Loran helps her. When Bruno and Jacop see Dianna they mistake her for the queen, but they realize she isn't.

Dianna helps Anise pick soriel herbs from a field, and Anise says the Moonrace must have come because of the beautiful land. Bruno and Jacop plan to steal Anise's crops, but the donkey chases them around and kicks them. Loran brings Anise a music box that he fixed, and inside are some letters from her daughter. Anise asks Dianna to read her the letters because she doesn't know how to read. Dianna reads the letter, which states that Anise's granddaughter Belleen is involved with a baker named Keith in Nocis. Anise becomes upset and worries about Belleen, saying it's all the fault of Dianna. Loran finds another letter, which explains that they are now selling bread in the Sunbelt zone. Loran sees an explosion nearby and runs out to grab the Turn A. The Red Team led by Cancer Kafka attacks the Borjarnons and the Kapools. Muron Muron tells Cancer they will have to do something special if they want to be accepted by Dianna Counter, and she tells him not to damage the farmland. Muron transforms his FLAT into drop mode and attacks Miashei. Her Kapool is damaged, and she is knocked out. Loran shows up and jumps on the FLAT, holding his beam saber to its head. He tells Muron to surrender, and Cancer aims her Wad's machine gun at Loran. Loran opens the Turn A's missile silo, and Cancer sees he isn't playing around. She says she isn't afraid of some Moonrace traitor, and he jump kicks the FLAT. Cancer and her forces retreat, and she tells Loran they will meet again. Loran brings injured Miashei to Anise's house, and Sochie feels that she didn't fight well enough to help Miashei. Anise, Loran and Dianna tend to Miashei's wounds. Later, Miashei is loaded onto an airship, joined by Anise and the donkey. She tells Loran to look up her daughter's bakery, and Loran thinks about how Keith is going to be her son-in-law.

Commentary

There's not much going on here aside from a battle and the introduction of the hippie Red Team, which seems to be made up of Moonrace descendants. I guess you can now add the repulsive-looking Anise to the list of psychos that tries to attack a Gundam with a useless weapon. Her connection to the story here is that she is Belleen's grandmother, as revealed in the letters. At least now we know why it's called the Donkey Bakery. Bruno and Jacop show up here, and working Anise is what they've been reduced to after their failed attempt to assassinate Kihel. Those guys just can't seem to get a break. First they work for a weirdo like Corin, then they get chased around by a crazy donkey.
