Episode 31: Pursuit! Crybaby Pou

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Phil makes a speech saying that Dianna has sold out the Royal Guard to the Militia. Miashei asks Bruno and Jacop if Loran can catch up to them, and Bruno says that Loran has a map. He stops and tunes in to Phil's speech. Phil says that with Dianna out of the way he will create a nation for the Moonrace on Earth and name it the Sunbelt Republic. Miran warns Phil that there are still many supporters of Dianna around, and even Agrippa can't destroy the influence she has. A sick Pou returns to the ship and asks Phil if he is going to dump her for her failure to get Kihel and the nuclear bombs. Phil tells her she should think about what she will do next instead of complaining about her failures. Elsewhere, Dianna and Midgard arrive at a harbor and board a ship to sail away from Ameria. As the Almaiya flies high above the ground, Pou lands her SUMO in the mobile suit hangar and makes the crew search for the Willghem. Harry approaches with his SUMO, and Pou orders the crew to shoot him because he is a traitor. They say if they shoot him they won't survive, so they do nothing. When Harry arrives on the bridge, Pou tries to shoot him. He grabs her and knocks her gun away. He says Phil must be cruel for making a sick person work, but Pou says she is doing this on her own. Harry puts a pill in his mouth and kisses Pou to make her swallow it. He explains that the bitter medicine will take her fever away. He asks her where Kihel was sent to, but she refuses to tell him. The crew doesn't seem to know either, but they tells Harry they don't think he's a traitor. Loran and Sochie travel through the ocean, and he makes her submerge underneath the surface as the Almaiya passes by. Sochie wonders if it is looking for the Willghem. The sailing ship leaves harbor, and Dianna thinks of the time she spent in Ameria with Will in the past and Loran and Sochie in the present. Nearby, Muron builds a sand castle on a beach and looks at the sailing ship with his binoculars. He freaks out when he sees Dianna and runs to wake up Cancer. She sees Dianna with her Wad's camera and wonders why she is there. On the Willghem, everyone wonders what they will do with the Almaiya approaching. Lily suggests using Kihel as a hostage again, but Kihel doesn't think that will work. Guin wants to use the mega beam cannon, but Horace tells him their sensor systems aren't working perfectly yet. Kihel makes some suggestions, and Guin thinks to himself about how she acts perfectly like Dianna.

On the Gallop, Miashei and Joseph want to go out and help the Willghem. The Willghem's bridge is locked down in the hull for protection. Nearby, Pou returns to the bridge and orders the men to fire at the Willghem's port bow. Kihel tells Horace to take the ship into the clouds, and Guin says they can still be found there. Kihel explains that the Moonrace hate the lightning, and the ship flies into the clouds. The Almaiya's crew is afraid of the clouds and wants to take another route, but Pou forces them to go in. One of the men freaks out and grabs her, but she knocks him away. The Almaiya fires at the Willghem, but it misses. The ship is then struck by lightning and temporarily disabled. Cancer and Muron say goodbye to the rest of the Red Team and take off in the FLAT and Wad. Dianna asks Midgard if she is being taken to the Moon to die, and Midgard says it has to do with security reasons. Cancer and Muron arrive and demand that Midgard give them Dianna. The ship's crew panics and grabs Dianna and Midgard. Midgard explains that Agrippa asked him to escort Dianna to the Moon, and he points out the Gendarme flying overhead. The Willghem emerges from the clouds and dodges the Almaiya's attacks. The Almaiya suddenly comes under attack from Loran and is damaged. The Turn A falls into the water, and Sochie throws it back into the air so that Loran can slice into the Almaiya's hull with his beam saber. He repeats the attack several times and slices off an entire area of the ship. As the ship crash lands in the water, Pou remembers that she has her SUMO with her. Loran calls the Willghem and tells them to proceed to Manupichi and that he and Sochie will catch up as soon as they can. The FLAT and Wad are loaded onto the Gendarme, and Dianna tells Cancer and Muron that their ancestors were good people. Midgard tells them that if they are loyal they will have no problem. As Loran and Sochie travel across the sea, she spots a falling star. She asks him if he made a wish, and he says his wish is the same as hers.

Commentary

We get to see some ship-to-ship combat here, which is pretty rare in most Gundam series. Kihel's tactic of hiding in the clouds reminded me very much of the Enterprise hiding in a nebula in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Pou's many failures have added up, and now she is totally ineffective as a soldier. I don't think anyone else would have allowed Loran to damage the ship as much as she did. Phil makes a big propaganda speech, and his rhetoric kind of reminds me of Gihren Zabi's Spacenoid supremacy speeches. We see a new ship here in the form of the Gendarme, which looks almost as if it alive like a squid or something. With three factions now heading for Manupichi, I imagine there will probably be a big battle there.
