Episode 39: Shattering an Asteroid

Review by Chris Guanche

August 1, 2002

Summary

The Willghem blasts its way out of Mistletoe and escapes from the asteroid. Guin wants to find Loran, and he tells Michael to get ready for a battle with Gym's forces. The Aspite quickly maneuvers to avoid wreckage from Mistletoe. Gym orders Sweatson to attack again. Gym asks Harry what Dianna will think when she sees Mistletoe, and Harry notes that he doesn't call her "Queen." Dianna tells Loran that she is worried about Kihel and wonders if Harry took her to Gym. As the Mahiroos attack, Sochie recklessly rushes in towards them. Loran asks what she is doing, and she says she wants to rescue her sister. Loran says she must be safe because they think she is Dianna, but Sochie says that doesn't guarantee she won't be killed. Cancer and Loran blast asteroids around the Mahiroos and use the asteroids as shields. Gym wonders why his forces are being destroyed, and Harry explains that real battles are different from practice simulations. Gym orders Midgard to go and test the enemy's power. The Willghem fires a warning shot from its mega beam cannon that passes right over the Aspite's bridge. Midgard calls Guin and asks him what he is doing in space. Guin says that trying to destroy them inside Mistletoe is barbaric. He says they are risking their lives to make peaceful negotiation with the Moon. While Guin talks to Midgard, the distraction allows Loran and the others to escape. Gym agrees to negotiations and wants to contact Agrippa. His men perform some calculations and discover that a chunk of Mistletoe has been knocked out of orbit and will slam into Von City. Dianna reaches the same conclusion on her shuttle, and Cancer vows to stop the asteroid. Loran explains to Sochie about gravity and says that Von City is populated by over a hundred thousand people. Gym tells Kihel that Mistletoe is going to slam into Von City and that there is no time for anyone to escape. She tells him to destroy it, but he says he doesn't have weapons for that. She accuses him of not wanting to save the city and grabs his sword. Harry rushes in and asks what is happening, and Gym says Kihel was just looking at the sword. Gym says he will see what he can do about Von City.

Harry asks Gym what he is going to do about Mistletoe, and Gym says he will use the Turn X top since it is the control system for Keilas Guilie. Cancer wants to go out and fight the Mahiroos, but Loran tells her not to. He says that the Turn A has nuclear bombs and that he will use them to destroy Mistletoe. Sochie asks him if he is sure, and he says he had to get rid of it anyway. Cancer and Muron go out to fight, and he tells them to be careful and avoid the nuclear blast. Dianna asks Loran to use the bomb to save the Moonrace, and he tells her to go to the Moon with Sochie. Gym launches from the Aspite in a Mahiroo with the Turn X top and is followed by Harry's SUMO. Nearby, Cancer engages in a one-on-one duel with Sweatson. Gym spots the Turn A and asks Harry what it is. Harry says it is an ancient suit from Earth and that the pilot is probably flying around aimlessly because he is scared of space. Midgard transfers to the Aspite and warns Gym of the power of the nuclear bomb. As Sochie and Dianna descend toward the Moon, Dianna thinks of how brave it was for Loran to carry the bombs for so long. As Loran prepares the nuclear bombs, the Turn A's monitor is filled with Xs. Gym and Harry show up, and Gym says that he knows the Turn A well. Loran tells everyone to back away and throws the nuclear bombs at Mistletoe. As the bombs are about to hit, he blasts them with his beam rifle. The nuclear bombs explode and engulf Mistletoe in a blinding white light. Mahiroos are destroyed in the blast, and Sweatson, Cancer and Muron back off. Strangely, the Turn X top forms a protective barrier around Gym and Harry. As Sochie looks at the nuclear blast, she cries and thinks of Gavane. The light vanishes, and all that is left of Mistletoe is minor debris. The Turn A lands on the Moon, followed by Sochie's Kapool and Dianna's shuttle. Cancer gets into the FLAT to celebrate with Muron and go back to Earth.

Commentary

What Gundam series would be complete without some Big Nasty Object threatening to slam into civilians? This time it's not a space colony, and it's rather accidental. I wonder if this Von City that everyone mentions is somehow connected to the Universal Century's Von Braun City, which was the first settlement built in space in that continuity. In another UC connection, Gym mentions Keilas Guilie, which was the space attack satellite used by the Zanscare Empire in V Gundam. Kihel has an odd confrontation with Gym, and I wonder what she would have really done had Harry not showed up. The battle here is well done, especially the parts focusing on Cancer and Sweatson. Loran is finally able to get rid of the nuclear bombs, and he saves Von City at the same time. Gym mentions the Turn X top here, and it looks like a mobile suit head. Based on the Turn A's reaction to it, the two seem connected somehow. Now that everyone is on the Moon, we'll have to see what happens next.
