Episode 42: The Turn X Activates

Review by Chris Guanche

August 6, 2002

Summary

Midgard holds Guin, Dianna and Lily hostage. Outside, Sweatson eats desserts while his Mahiroo is repaired. Nearby, Loran has a quick snack with Sochie, Miashei and Fran. Sweatson gets back into his Mahiroo and asks Loran what his decision is. Loran asks Michael what to do, and Michael orders him to attack. He broadcasts an announcement saying that if the Moonrace tries to take the Turn A, he will have the Willghem destroy the city. Loran objects to the order, and Michael yells at him. Midgard tells Guin to have Michael repeal that announcement, but Guin refuses. Dianna says that the fighting instinct that has returned to the Moonrace will destroy their civilization. Agrippa panics and asks Gym to make the Mahiroos retreat. While they are speaking, Sweatson attacks Loran. Loran tries to fight off Sweatson, and Sweatson attempts to beat Loran without beam weapons. Gym tells Agrippa that Gaingnham was built by his ancestors and that he can't let it be destroyed. He decides that he will use the Turn X, despite not having all the data on it. He calls Merrybell Gadget in her Bandit and asks her if she is ready. Loran jump kicks Sweatson, and his men hold him back when he tries to shoot Loran. Harry and Kihel use an elevator near the palace to enter the city. Harry reminds her that they are entering enemy territory. Loran gets out of the Turn A and tells Sochie he is going to surrender it. She says she will take it out, and he says he doesn't want his home to be destroyed like Nocis. He says she can't because he is a better pilot than she is, and she slaps him. Agrippa calls Loran and offers him a solution. He says that if Loran fights Turn X on the surface of the Moon, he will release the hostages. If not, he will kill them. He tells Loran he wants him to fight outside because he doesn't want the city to be destroyed. Loran decides he will fight the Turn X.

Agrippa tells Midgard not to point a gun at the hostages. Dianna asks Agrippa why he wants to kill Dianna, and he says that Dianna is upsetting the peace of the Moonrace. He explains that by going to Earth she has rekindled the fighting instinct of the Moonrace and made them return to the ancient ways. He says that she is unlucky and that wars follow her wherever she goes, and this will ultimately lead to the destruction of both Earth and the Moon. Sweatson attacks Loran again, and Michael has the mega beam cannon fired at a lower power level to stop Sweatson. The blast instead hits parts of the city. Loran tries to evade Sweatson so that he can go out into space. Suddenly, the city becomes dark and Sweatson hesitates. Outside, Merrybell supervises as the Turn X is hooked up to power cables. Gym uses all of the city's power to jump-start the Turn X. The area behind Agrippa collapses and reveals Harry's SUMO. Midgard points his gun at Kihel, and Dianna reveals herself. Kihel says she is Dianna, and in the confusion Guin grabs Midgard's gun. He tells Agrippa to return Dianna's power to her, and Agrippa asks which is the queen. Harry tells Agrippa he should be ashamed, and Agrippa tells him he doesn't want violent people on the Moon. Dianna asks why he then gave power to Gym, and Agrippa says he had to allow him to study Turn X to learn more about Turn A. He says that the Turn A destroyed Earth's civilization and was responsible for the Dark History. Agrippa uses a floor panel and ascends to the ceiling to escape. He says that unless they know more, the Turn A will destroy the Earth and the Moon. Suddenly, several FLATs burst into the palace and attack Harry. Loran reaches the Moon's surface and is followed by Mahiroos. In a tunnel, Dianna explains to Kihel that her body is old despite being in cryogenic stasis. She says all that she ever wanted was to have the Moonrace live in peace on Earth. Sochie's Kapool and Miashei's Borjarnon carry Dianna and the others to the floating palace so they can discover the truth of the Dark History. Gym arrives at Loran's location and uses the Turn X's beam emitters to destroy the three Mahiroos.

Commentary

This was quite a suspense-filled episode that followed the cliffhanger from last time. The mysterious Turn X finally shows up, and it's quite a nice design. You can see some similarities between it and the Turn A. On an amusing aside, Fran points out that if you turn an X, you still get an X. Agrippa says that the Turn A is responsible for the destruction of Earth's civilization, so this explains why there's legends of the evil Gundams amongst the Red Team or a psycho like Corin. The mystery of course is how and why the Turn A destroyed Earth's civilization, and how the Turn X is connected. Gym destroys some of his own forces, and I have to wonder if he just wanted to test his weapons or make sure he had a solo fight with Loran. Either way, we'll see next time when their battle begins.
