40: A New Leader
Review by Chris February 6, 2001 In space, Howard reviews the situation and decides to team up with the Gundam pilots as Zechs requested. He wonders why it is that Zechs didn't return to space. On Earth, guerillas fight off OZ mobile dolls and are saved by Wing Zero. Heero destroys all the mobile dolls in a small town and their leader as well. At Romefeller headquarters, a meeting is held between Relena and the top officials. She believes that OZ should disarm itself as a sign of peace for the world, but Duke Dermail disagrees. Marquise Weridge and the others agree with Relena, and Dermail finds that his position has been weakened. In space, Quatre, Duo, Trowa, and Noin decide their next move. They don't believe Wufei will join them because he likes to fight alone. Duo gets a call from Howard asking if he'd like him to fix his Gundam. Dermail and Dorothy discuss what should be done, and Dorothy says he should head out to space and personally lead OZ against White Fang to regain his power. He agrees and leaves. A general meeting of the foundation is held, and Relena intends to make an announcement. Heero gets an OZ uniform and positions himself in a spot to kill her. She announces that OZ needs to disarm and make a peace offering to the space colonies to that they can coexist. Heero is surprised by this and decides not to kill her. In space, Wufei attacks the battleship Libra, and Quinze and Sedici wonder why a Gundam is attacking them. They use Libra's cannons to disable Altron. Zechs tells them they should declare war on Earth now. Aboard Peacemillion, Duo wonders why Howard is helping them. Howard is informed of an announcement by White Fang. Quinze tells the citizens of the colonies that Earth has declared war on them, and he shows footage of Wufei attacking Libra. He says that they will not take anymore, and he shows live video of White Fang forces attacking Duke Dermail's escort. Dermail tries to escape to Barge, but the mobile dolls surround him and destroy his shuttle. Quinze comes back and says that they have a new leader to guide them. Zechs appears and introduces himself as Milliardo Peacecraft. He says that Earth is the center of conflict and he will eliminate it. Heero thinks about a future that Wing Zero showed him that involves killing Zechs. Well, more and more seems to happen as the series comes close to a conclusion. Heero again decides to kill Relena but fails to do so. He has no problem killing nameless Leo pilots 1-10,000, but he can't kill Relena. Maybe if she got inside a Leo he could. Dorothy refers to Dermail as grandfather, so their family connection is finally explained. I definitely wasn't expecting Dermail to die so soon, since at the moment he is the villain. Now it seems that Zechs is. He offers no explanation as to why he joined White Fang, and no real reason why Earth is evil. It's a shame that he's a villain now when he wasn't before.
