Episode 12: The Winds of Jaburo

Review by Chris Guanche

June 15, 2000

Summary

The Mk II attacks a Hizack and destroys its ballute, causing the suit to burn up. Kamille then thinks how it's wrong to attack defenseless people. The AEUG suits ditch their ballutes after safely entering Earth's atmosphere and head for Jaburo. At Jaburo, Guntank IIs, TIN Cod and Saberfish fighter planes are deployed to fight the AEUG. In a prison cell, Reccoa and Kai think of a plan to escape. Kamille lands on the Amazon River and uses the Flying Armor as a Waverider to surf on the surface. He destroys TIN Cod fighter planes and reaches the land. Jerid and two Hizacks come out of the forest and attack him. In the confusion of battle, Jerid loses sight of Kamille and heads for Jaburo. Kamille abandons his Flying Armor by using it as a weapon against a squad of mobile suits. He then arrives at one of the entrances to Jaburo, followed by Char, Apolly and Roberto. Char notices that Jaburo's defenses are quite weak, and many areas seem to be empty. Jerid enters Jaburo and is told by an officer that the base is moving. Char orders Apolly and Roberto to find Reccoa, and Kamille suddenly senses her. Jerid appears out of nowhere and attacks Kamille and Char. As he evades their attack, he sacrifices his own men to save himself. The battle moves out of the buildings and into empty caverns. Apolly interrogates an officer and is told that Jaburo is a trap for the AEUG, and a nuclear bomb will detonate in one hour. Apolly doesn't believe him because using nuclear weapons violates the Antarctic Treaty. Elsewhere, Kamille continues to fight with Jerid. Kamille manages to destroy the left arm of Jerid's Marasai, but he runs out of ammo. Jerid notices and moves in to attack Kamille. Kamille lands on unstable ground and falls into a canyon. As he jumps out, he and Jerid both fire their rifles, and the beams hit each other.

The impact of the two beams sets of an explosion that rocks the cave. Kamille falls down another hole, and Jerid is forced to abandon his damaged Marasai before it explodes. Kamille senses Reccoa and begins to look for her. Char is given confirmation that a nuclear bomb is indeed inside Jaburo. However, it is buried 150 meters underground, making any attempt to defuse it impossible. Only half an hour is left, and Char orders his men to evacuate the prisoners onto two Garuda class airships. Jerid finds several injured soldiers trying to turn over a jeep, and he helps them turn it upright. He then begins searching for the exit. As the evacuation continues, Char enters Jaburo again to search for Kamille. Kai and Reccoa don't think anyone will come and begin to shout for help. Kamille locates the jail and busts open the side wall. He then shoots the lock off the door to let them out. Reccoa happily hugs Kamille and introduces him to Kai. Char arrives and tells them that only 10 minutes are left before the bomb explodes. Kamille places Reccoa and Kai in the Mk II's hand and heads for the exit. A shuttle is about to take off outside, and Jerid abandons the wounded men in the jeep. He punches and knocks over many men and forces his way on to the shuttle as it takes off. Nearby, the Audhumla is about to take off when a squad of Hizacks attack. As it takes off, Kamille leaves Reccoa and Kai on the plane to help Char. Kamille and Char fight off the Hizacks to cover the Audhumla At the last minute, Kamille reaches the plane and helps the Hyaku-Shiki get on. The nuclear bomb then explodes and completely destroys Jaburo, leaving behind a massive mushroom cloud. A Karaba Valkyrie plane piloted by Hayato Kobayashi arrives to lead the Audhumla to safety.

Commentary

Another action packed episode. Kamille is starting to have uneasiness about killing people, much like Amuro did in his early days. It's interesting to see Char attack Jaburo again, much like he did in the original series. Although, this time he is a bit more successful. The Titans were hoping to lure the AEUG into Jaburo and destroy them, but it didn't turn out that way. From the looks of it, all they did was kill a bunch of innocent Federation Forces soldiers and destroy a valuable base. Jerid gets quite nasty in this episode, first by sacrificing his own men to save himself. You can also see it when he beats up all those guys to get on the carrier plane. It's also interesting to see cameos by both Kai and Hayato. At this point, almost every surviving member of the original series has made a cameo in this series. There's a few surprises left, though.
