Episode 20: The Heated Escape

Review by Chris Guanche

November 21, 2000

Summary

Amuro knocks on Kamille's door and asks to speak to him, but Kamille is asleep. As Amuro walks through the halls, Beltorchika finds him and invites him over for coffee. He declines, and says that going into space will bring out Kamille's potential, and it would do some good for him to return to space. He heads to the bridge to speak with Hayato about the plan to attack the Titan base at New Guinea. The plan is to attack the base and steal a shuttle to send Amuro and Kamille back into space. Hayato receives a message that the day the Argama will come into Earth orbit. That doesn't give them enough time to attack the Titan base and steal a shuttle. Nearby, the Sudori picks up the Audhumla on radar. Ben tells Four that he knows she wants her memories back. He tells her that if she fights well, then they will be restored. If she fails again, the Titans will cancel the research project, leaving her without memories forever. Four launches in the Psycho Gundam with an escort squad of five Hizacks on Base Jabbers. Amuro goes out in the Rick Dias, and Kamille is late because he was sleeping. Outside, Amuro has destroyed the Hizacks, but Four grabs his Rick Dias and is about to destroy it when she suddenly feels intense pain. She loses control of the Psycho Gundam, and Amuro escapes. Namicar convinces Four to fight for her memories, and she leaves to attack again. Ben tells his crew to evacuate because he plans to ram the Sudori into the Audhumla, and several officers decide to stay with him. Beltorchika stops Kamille and tells him she doesn't want Amuro to be around him. She says Amuro pushes himself too hard around Kamille, and Kamille says there isn't anything he can do about that.

The attack begins again, and Beltorchika asks Kamille to let Amuro go. He tells her that selfishness like that can kill Amuro. Amuro prepares to go out, but this time Kamille goes out first to talk to Four. She begins shooting at the Mk II, but Kamille doesn't return fire. Amuro sees the Sudori heading towards the Audhumla, and he begins attacking it. Hayato sees that the Sudori is on a kamikaze run. Four continues shooting at Kamille, and he approaches her. She transforms the Psycho Gundam into mobile suit mode and grabs the Mk II. Kamille gets out of the Mk II, and Four opens her cockpit. He tells her how his parents were killed, and about how he always hated his name and tried to prove himself as a man. He breaks down in tears, and Four pulls out a gun and tells him to leave. She slams the Psycho Gundam into the Sudori's side and starts offloading a shuttle booster. As she heads back to the Psycho Gundam, Ben shoots her in the leg. She says she will do as she pleases, and he shoots her again. Amuro and Kamille get a psychic message from her about the booster. Kamille latches onto the booster while Amuro deflects the attack. He rams his rifle into the Sudori and kills Ben. Kamille launches the shuttle booster as the Sudori explodes. Amuro is knocked into the ocean as Kamille escapes. Kamille arrives in space and docks with the Argama. Bright and the rest of the crew welcome him back. He asks where Fa is, and Bright tells him she went to Granada with Char and Katz.

Commentary

Well, it looks like Kamille's time on Earth is over, and it ends rather tragically. It seems like Four sacrificed herself to send Kamille back into space. I say 'seems' because how many times in Gundam does it occur that you think someone dies in an explosion when they really don't? Char is a master of this. How tragic (and in typical Zeta Gundam fashion) that Kamille and Four understand each other, but are now separated. Now that Kamille is back in space, hopefully we'll get some Titan stuff and maybe get to see Char and Jerid, since they've both been absent for so long.
