Episode 29: Crisis at Side Two

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

On the Radish, Char works on the Hyaku-Shiki and then leaves the ship. Katz passes out lunches to the pilots, and Emma chats with him about Char and Katz's Nemo simulation. On the Argama, one of Bright's men gives him a decoded message. It seems that the Alexandria is moving from Side 7 to Side 2, and it recently contacted a ship carrying G3 poison gas. On the mobile suit deck, Astoniage and Reccoa test out the Methuss. Kamille arrives and asks where Fa is. Astoniage says she is probably with Shinta and Qum, and Kamille decides he will find her. As he walks down a hallway, he is hit by a paper airplane. He sees Shinta and Qum run out of Fa's room naked, followed by a naked Fa herself. They run back inside to put on their clothes, and Kamille gets slapped for staring at Fa's open robe. He says she's too harsh with the kids, and she asks if he thinks she's not fit to be a mobile suit pilot. He says she is, and she throws a towel at him. On the Alexandria, Jerid holds a meeting for the mobile suit pilots. Yazan tries to enter and is thrown out because he refused to participate. Jerid says that to prevent the destruction of hundreds of colonies, they will gas one to force the AEUG to surrender and end the war. At Side 2, the mayor of Colony 1 isn't convinced that an AEUG ship can defend all of Side 2. The Alexandria, disguised as an asteroid, begins attacking the AEUG ship at Colony 35. The mayor of Colony 1 wants to surrender to the Titans, and he has one of his men shot for not working quickly enough in calling the Titans. The Titans don't want to hear his pleas and begin broadcasting Minovsky particles to prevent hearing further transmissions.

Bright is informed of the attack and orders the Zeta Gundam and Methuss to launch first and attack the Titans. Kamille launches with the hyper mega launcher, followed by Reccoa. The mayor is told about the approach of two suits and the Argama, and he orders his men not to attack them and tells them to contact the Titans. When another man refuses, he has him punched. As Kamille and Reccoa approach Colony 25, he sees an asteroid and thinks it is a ship. He shoots at it and exposes the Alexandria. The Radish sends out Emma in the Mk II, followed by Katz in a Nemo. A group of Hizacks begin attaching the G3 container to Colony 25, and Kamille tries to shoot it. Jerid attacks with the Gabthley, preventing Kamille from getting a good shot. Kamille transforms the Zeta Gundam into Waverider mode and flies away. Jerid chases him and tells Mouar to supervise the injection of the G3 gas into the colony. Kamille hides in a nearby colony that is under construction, but Jerid finds him. He grapples Kamille and pulls out two beam sabers, but Kamille breaks away. Mouar fights with Emma and abandons the battle to help Jerid. Katz finds the G3 container and destroys it, and Emma tells him to find Kamille. Mouar relentlessly attacks Kamille and escapes when Katz shows up. Jerid says it is better to be patient. On the Argama, Apolly and Kamille change into normal clothes and see Shinta and Qum hiding. They then accompany Bright to speak with the mayor. The mayor tells the man who was shot that it was an accident and offers a bribe. When Bright shows up, he asks about the transmission to the Titans. The mayor lies and says it was a traitor. Bright warns him that even if they get a temporary truce with the Titans, all Spacenoids will pay the price.

Commentary

This was a great episode, and it shows how desperate the war is becoming. The Titans consider the AEUG to be a major threat, and they are willing to gas a colony to try to get the AEUG to surrender. For a very serious episode, it starts out rather lighthearted. Kamille's encounter with Fa is nearly identical to the one Amuro had in the original series when he saw Mirai naked in the shower too. The only difference there was that Amuro wasn't stupid enough to look at Mirai's breasts. The mayor from Side 2 is a devious man, and he switches sides so many times that it amazes me. I like the level of the insane lies when he tells the man who was shot that the shooter thought he was shooting blanks. He even lies to Bright's face, but I don't think Bright bought it. If the Titans have already performed colony drops and poison gassing of colonies, what else can they do? They've already done the same horrible things as the Principality of Zeon, which they were created to suppress. Interesting how that has changed.
