Episode 34: The Call of Darkness

Review by Chris Guanche

January 24, 2002

Summary

The Radish gives up its pursuit of the Gwadan, and Emma tells Henken that she sent supplies and mobile suits over to the Argama. Kamille works on the Zeta Gundam and talks with Astoniage about how Reccoa seems to like Char, but he ignores her. Astoniage laughs at him for being so serious and says he must have fallen in love on Earth. Wong shows up and starts harassing the mechanics that are repairing the Methuss. Kamille sees Fa and asks her to do him a favor. Fa visits Reccoa in the infirmary, and they sneak out to Reccoa's room. Reccoa talks about how she joined the guerrillas in the One Year War after being separated from her parents. After the war she joined the military, but that didn't feel right and she joined AEUG. Before Fa leaves, Reccoa tells her not to become like her. Fa doesn't understand what she means and leaves. Aboard the Dogosse Giar, Yazan wants to attack the Argama, but Scirocco says it is important for the Zeon to join with the Titans. Yazan insists that they have to defeat the Argama, and Scirocco tells him to do as he wishes. Sarah wants to go, but Scirocco says she has no place in Yazan's battle, and he wants her to watch Yazan's reckless fighting style. Yazan launches with a group of Hambrabis and Marasais. Wong and Bright argue because Wong wants to attack the Titans, and Bright wants to dock with the supply ship La Vie en Rose. The Titans arrive, and Bright sends out mobile suits in response. Reccoa feels something strange in her room and heads for the mobile suit deck. Char sees Reccoa and tells her she shouldn't go out into battle. Reccoa says he's never done anything to stop her before, and she goes out. He wonders what she wants him to do. Yazan's men deploy Marasai dummy balloons to make their forces appear larger.

After all the dummy Marasais are deployed, the attack begins. Kamille launches with the Zeta Gundam and its hyper mega launcher, followed by Emma, Char and Reccoa. As Reccoa launches in the Methuss she finds that her arm still hurts from when Haman shot her. She flies too far ahead of Kamille, and he tells her to fall back a bit. Kamille uses the hyper mega launcher to destroy some of the enemy suits. Reccoa is attacked by a Hambrabi and is saved by the Hyaku-Shiki. Yazan and some of his men attack the Radish, which is being defended by Emma's Mk II. Bright tells Reccoa to return and defend the Argama. There is no response, and Wong starts yelling over the radio. Bright becomes angry and tells Wong to sit down and shut up. Char finds the dummies and tells Kamille to warn the Argama. Reccoa attacks Yazan, but she is unable to think clearly and loses her advantage. She tries to fight, but finds she cannot. Yazan cripples the Methuss and prepares to kill her. She comes out and asks him if he called out to her. The Methuss explodes, and Yazan grabs Reccoa. Now that the Argama's suits are returning, Yazan retreats. Kamille returns to the ship and finds Fa crying with Emma. She tells Kamille that Reccoa is dead, and he can't believe it. Fa believes it is her fault for helping Reccoa escape the infirmary, and Kamille tells her she shouldn't blame herself. Bright tells Wong they can't go into battle because the crew is unstable over Reccoa's death. Wong thinks they can do anything because they are pros, and he suggests they rendezvous with La Vie en Rose. Kamille comes to Char's room and punches him. He says that if Char had been nicer to Reccoa that she wouldn't have died. Char notices that Reccoa's cactus is in bloom, and Kamille runs off in anger. The Argama and Radish rendezvous with La Vie en Rose and dock with the supply ship.

Commentary

This was a great episode. Reccoa's problems have been building up for several episodes now, and I personally thought she would have died this time. Surprisingly, she survives, but she's in the hands of the Titans now. I think she's going to join them, since she's always thinking of Scirocco. Tensions on the Argama seem to be especially high, even before anyone thinks Reccoa died. It looks like the constant attacks are starting to take a toll on everyone. Wong is getting considerably more annoying as time passes. He may be an investor in AEUG, but he really doesn't understand the military at all. Things also don't seem to be going so well with Kamille and Char after Kamille lands that punch on him. You'd think someone like Char could avoid some kid punching him, but I guess he was caught off guard.
