Episode 37: The Day of Dakar

Summary

Using the Melord air transport, Jerid searches for the Audhumla in Africa. He figures that the AEUG and Karaba must be heading for Dakar, Senegal, and decides to change course. On the Audhumla, Hayato reminds Char that on this mission he will not be a mobile suit pilot and is too important to replace. As Kamille dresses for battle, Amuro asks him if he feels like fighting. Kamille says that crying won't bring Four back, and Amuro tells him it took him and Char seven years to understand that. As they walk, Kamille says he is surprised Beltorchika volunteered to go down to Dakar and scout it out. Later, as they are about to get inside the Dijeh, Amuro tells Char that he is the only one who can represent AEUG in the congress. Nearby, Beltorchika pulls up to an inspection point as is told by a fellow AEUG member that everything has been secured and she only has to get into Dakar. She poses as a reporter, but the Federation soldiers refuse to let her pass and fondle her breasts. A Titans pilot named Addis Aziba helps Beltorchika and fights off the Federation soldiers. She agrees to drive him into Dakar, and he tells her the times are changing quickly. As the Audhumla approaches Dakar, it comes under attack. Asshimars scramble to defend the area, and Addis decides to fight despite a broken arm. As the Dijeh and Zeta Gundam approach the plains, Amuro tells Kamille to split off and distract the enemy. He lands the Dijeh on the plains, and Char goes into the city with Beltorchika. As the congress struggles to do its business, Char, Beltorchika and several AEUG members rush the floor and take it over. Char begins to give a speech and identifies himself as Char Aznable, but he also reveals his true identity of Casval Rem Deikun. He says that the will of his father was not like that of the Zabis, and that the Federation has become worse than the Zabis. He says this must change if people are ever to live peacefully. In France, Sayla Mass watches her brother's speech on a pocket TV. In Dakar, Kamille flies over the city and tries to avoid the incoming Asshimars.

Addis chases Kamille over the city, and Kamille tells him he has no intention of fighting. Nearby, Jerid launches from the Melord in the Byarlant, followed by an escort of Hizacks. He listens to some of Char's speech and tells his men they will have to destroy the communications equipment and end the speech. The congressional building shakes from the battle, and Beltorchika runs outside to record the Titans fighting. One of the Asshimars attacks Kamille, and he blasts it. As it nosedives towards Dakar, Addis flies down to pick it up and prevent it from crashing into a building. His Asshimar doesn't have enough power to gain altitude, and Kamille flies in with the Zeta Gundam to help. Addis asks why Kamille helped him, and Kamille says he will understand if he listens to Char's speech. Amuro spots the Byarlant and Hizacks heading for the congressional building and sees that they want to stop the speech. Char continues to give his speech and says that humans must leave Earth if it is ever to recover. Beltorchika's video is shown to the congress, and Char says it is typical of the Titans' dirty methods. Hovering above the city, Addis hears the speech and sees that Char is right. He crashes into a Hizack trying to interrupt the speech and ends up crashing in the street. Kamille lands to get his rifle back from a Hizack he thought he defeated, but it jumps him and knocks him down. Jerid lands nearby and says that Kamille will die from his clumsiness. Addis gets in front of Jerid and says if they are right they can prove it in the congress. Jerid shoots through Addis' suit and hits the congressional building. The representatives are shocked, and Char's speech is a success. Jerid tries to attack Kamille, but two Asshimars block him and inform him they've been ordered to move out. As Char's speech ends, Kai watches it in a dingy bar while Sayla watches it in France. On the Audhumla, Amuro congratulates Beltorchika for her good work. Char has a toast with Amuro and Hayato to celebrate his success. Char says he has lost his freedom, and Amuro tells him there will be sacrifices during the fight. Kamille and Beltorchika talk, and she tells him she realized the way she acted before was wrong.

Commentary

Following Four's death, I expected Kamille to be more of an emotional wreck, given that he is an emotional guy. But it seems he's taken a cue from Amuro and decided to bury his feelings. Of course, the death of Four parallels that of Lalah, which Amuro alludes to. We get to see two pointless silent cameos here from Sayla and Kai. This is Sayla's first appearance since the original series, so I was expecting something a bit more meaningful. Jerid screws up as usual, and his actions serve to show the Federation how cruel the Titans are. He killed a fellow Titan, but this is also the same guy who let a bunch of soldiers die when he escaped from Jaburo. Also, what's with all these nice people like Addis and Emma in the Titans? The Titans are a hand-picked fascist group, so how do nice people like them sneak in? Beltorchika makes an appearance here too, and I'm glad she's become a nicer person. The Beltorchika from Hong Kong was very annoying, and more of her would not have been appreciated.
